Good wife. Pick it because you like it.
Good info on John Mitchell! I didn’t know he was involved with so many Bands. Wishbone Ash seemed to fly under the radar for me! I heard that W’Ashes Live Album is good! I have an instrumental Album Nouveau Calls by W’Ash that came out in ‘87…it was enjoyable listen for me! I’m going to see John Mitchell play with Asia in Mid July!
Aqualung Passion Play Thick As A Brick Too Old...
I've seen them live 30 times🎼🤟🎼
In 1970 the war was Vietnam and soldiers were being drafted...
Great Band, great Album!
Loving Willow! I’d heard symptom of life on Rick Beato’s channel but this got me to listen. I’ve also placed a number of these on my “to go back to” playlist 🎉
Kaipa Urskog is more focused than the new one. Great record nonetheless.
The Trees is about equality.
The Lamia character was NOT "made up" for this album. The Lamia comes from Greek mythology. In Greek mythology, the Lamia was a child-eating monster and, in later tradition, was regarded as a type of night-haunting spirit. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lamia
Gorgeous track and written by the drummer - with no drums? Beautiful from beginning to end, true music.
My ordering is 8) Aquarius [nice initial offering but many tracks rather unmemorable for me], 7) The Mountain [a bit snoozy at times for me with 3 tracks sounding too similar to one another], 6) Restoration [mainly because it's too short -- an EP], 5) Vector [Vector ranks higher for me because of the long track Veil -- simply amazing!], 4) Fauna [nice re-invention with Pete in place of Diego, but I do miss Diego's virtuouso a lot!] , 3) Visions [great from start to end], 2) Virus [their hardest hitting and rhythmically complex album], 1) Affinity [simply brilliant except for red giant]. But truthfully, any of my top 4 could be inter-changed on a given day.
I noticed that this is not the original album version..... there are some remixes in this version.
Nathan, have you checked out a band from LA Lo moon? If not I think you need to... Not to progy, but more than that is more like 80's early 90's Talk talk or echo and the bunnymen perhaps
Great list! So much great music from this year so far, I can't wait for the rest of 2024!
#1 hearts and hand grenades- where I begin #2 blooming discord- memories from the future #3 Scott stapp- higher power #4 mick mars- other side of Mars #5 lift the curse- overtake #6 the gems- phoenix #7 the warning- keep me feed #8 raising ravens- motivesEP #9 Devilskin- surfacingEP
Thanks Nathan! You put so much hard work into this. I've now got all The Lemon Twigs' albums. Great band!
Great List! We have many of the same albums on our lists (some I discovered through you), but several differences as well. I've listened to everything on your list except for Willow and Aquilus, and all are good, even those that did not make my own top 20. Great first half to the year, many more very good releases beyond the top 20! A couple that ranked high on my list but didn't make yours is Rick Miller and Albion, which I really enjoyed. But Big Big Train and Barock Project (was completely blown away by the is Barock Project album-fantastic were for me the best prog of the year so far. But my current new favorite album of the year (so far, it changes all the time) is not prog at all. It is the brand new album from Guster - Ooh La La, a fantastic album of beautiful songs, melodies, and arrangements, a low-key masterpiece that is a real grower. Anyway, here is my list of top 20 favorites so far this year: 20. Karfagen - Messages From Afar-2nd Nature 19. Sykofant - s/t 18. Returned to the Earth - Stalagmite Steeple 17. Dirt Poor Robins - Firebird 16. the Decemberists - As It Ever Was, So It Will Be Again 15. Emerald City Council - Motion Carries 14. Azure - Fym 13. Kyros - Mannequin 12. Airbag - The Century of the Self 11. Kaipa - Sommargryningsljus 10. Steve Hackett - The Circus and the Nightwhale 9. The Pineapple Thief - It Leads To This 8. Mandoki Soulmates - The Memory of Our Future 7. Rick Miller - One of the Many 6. IZZ - Collapse the Wave 5. Bend Sinister - Mostly Great Things 4. Albion - Lakesongs of the Elbid 3. Big Big Train - The Likes of Us 2. Barock Project - Time Voyager 1. Guster - Ooh La La (Not Prog at all, but my new current fave, fantastic songs, vocals, and arrangements. Low-key, but wonderful songs that build into joyous evocative gems).
Ive got one that you missed Nathan its a Super Deluxe..by a band called YES? They call it Fragile...I think its pretty good😅
@@brianoakley980 will have to check it out 😂
There is a reason the third impression ends so abruptly. While on an album, it is more of a performance piece. The third impression is about man vs. computer. Throughout the performance, Keith had been playing the Moog synthesizer, which was turned sideways to the audience. It's relatively narrow but wide and tall. As the repeating part begins, Keith leaves the stage with the sequencer set to repeat but continue to speed up. The Moog , representing the computer, turns towards the audience while spreading large silver bat like wings in triumphant victory over man. But at the maximum speed of the notes, there is an explosion as the Moog/computer blows its brains out. Hence, the sudden cut off of music. The piece was performed in quadraphonic sound, which was an early forerunner of Surround Sound. Massive speakers were placed in the four corners of the venue with the audience in the center. As the final note sequence played, the sound was panned from speaker to speaker making the sound circle the audience once per sequence. As the sequence was played faster the sound zipped around the audience faster until it sounded like it was coming from all directions. At the explosion all the lights were killed momentarily.
Interested to check out Aquilis as I have been getting into Agalloch recently.
Maybe it´s their harshest sounding ablum - at times cold and sharp as steal. But no complaints, it´s about politics. Although there is this wonderful piece "Aspirations". These pauses - Minnear knows a thing or two about composition. The dissonant music of "So sincere" and combining the sound of a sax with a violin, intentionally ugly, shows that the ruler and his words are anything but sincere. Crazy bass-line in the guitar solo, it´s always a tick too late. And typical Gentle Giant - using a cello and a violin (except for its solo) in "The face" just for a little repeating phrase.
Nathan, I forgot that Barock project came out a month ago... I immediately went on to listen to it.... At first I liked it then I had to stop as I wasn't in the right frame of mind (🍺) then I went back to it.... I'm really dialed in and it's really growing on me... I can see you moving this one up in the rankings at the end of the year! ✌️
Hey Nathan great list. Always enjoy finding out what’s on your favorites list. Hope you do a top 50 list at the end of the year. You could always break that up into two shows. Just a thought. Keep up the good work 🔥🎶🎼🎹🎵🎸
The GREAT GIANT! This was my first GG album in 74, then I bought everything prior! For me, the Concept more or less symbolized POLITICIANS & POLITICS rather than a Kingdom and all the facets through rhetoric to charm and manipulate the masses! ALWAYS good to listen to during an Election year!
Also Sleepsmakeswaves is in my top 5 for sure! Such a great record!
Azure is my favorite album of the year! I do not know why. But this album is just an adventure! And hits all the right notes for me throughout its run time. Dirt poor robins album is fantastic! As is IZZ. Surprised of no mention of Almo’s reconciliation. One of the gems this year for me! Thanks for the video❤
Almo would probably be album number 21…just barely missed the cut, but no doubt a great album!
My only complaint about the list, and it's only because I like them it's the Pineapple thief album it leads to this. I just think it's a solid album... It's not their best, but it's right up there!
@@lawrenceheadrick I’m a fan, I think it is solid too! Would have been in the mix if I expanded to 25…
👍👍👍
So glad you have BBT close to the top , (unlike some of your fellow RUclipsrs who I’m assuming must have received bad copies of it? 😉what a brilliant record. 😊
Indeed it is! It's going to be hard to find a better live act then BBT!
@@lspiegel807 Yeah, not sure what is wrong with some of my colleagues’ ears… 😉
Oh I am HERE for the Bellum II jumpscare :D
@@RhymeSignatures I’ve gotta throw some curveballs in there 😉
Thanks Nathan. A good summary of your favourites so far.
Kaipa for me.
1.This was 2. thick as a brick 3. songs from the wood 4. aqualung 5 stand up 6 benefit 7. Passion Play 8. heavy horses 9. Minstrel In the Gallery 10 Warchild
One of my favorites albums too. It's great to see Jana evolve the more she listens to prog. I think I remember a year or two before this she was very surprised and couldn't get into some tracks, and now she appreciate GG ! What a change. I like that.
How can a song be so beautiful but at the same time so incredibly creepy. Only Genesis could have come up with something like this.
All Hail Gentle Giant !!! A masterpiece work. I try to get people from all different musical backgrounds and allegiances to give Cogs in Cogs a go... with varying degrees of success it has to be said !! 😅 It's either WOW 😳 OR...a strange expression staring back at me ! 😅 Not for everyone but Hell yes , it's definitely for me. Love GG. Fabulous Nathan and Jana. 🎵🎵😍🤘
Nathan thanks for showcasing Gentle Giant this month. saw them only once live back in the day and they knocked me out. Are you still considering a look at Italy's greatest 70s prog band PFM. Though not commercial at all I think your audience would dig them Peace
Yes and please do the english versions af their two albums, Photos of Ghosts and The World Became The World. These are just fabulous.
Hi Nathan, TP&TG has always been my favorite Gentle Giant album, of course their very Best is their "Live" Playing The Fool album. Gentle Giant for me is always better Live and thankfully there are many great Live performances on video for the younger of you Kats to catch up on ! 👍🎶🎼✌
Congrats on the move, and thanks for a sublime album side for a Sunday. "Cogs in Cogs" always reminds me of Yes, whereas "No God's a Man" is pure GG, but both songs show off their vocal arranging chops. I get the reason for the dissonance in "Valedictory", but it does make it a tougher listen. It's one of those room-clearing songs that should be labelled "Don't play this for your girlfriend!" 😉
I'm surprised how short side 2 is
GG albums were always on the short side relative to their peers. Given how dense the arrangements are and how much time it probably took to rehearse and record it does make sense.
@@yes_head ah, yes it does, but side one is quite long then, isn't it : )
@@Lightmane Side 1 is ~22 minutes, not long by most bands’ standards, but I’m guessing it’s probably the longest side on any Gentle Giant album!
@@sylvanm4216 I don't think album sides go much over 22 minutes. I think most are under 20
@@Lightmane It depends on the artist and the era (albums were usually very short in the early 60s, often under 30 minutes, but got longer with time). Genesis used to regularly release albums in the 50 to 55 minute range, meaning up to 28 minutes per side.
GG's beautiful chaos getting Sunday started with a bang. Powerful and glorious😉 RIP Ray Shulman
My favorite Gentle Giant album!!!
Songs from the Wood is my no. 1!
Nice to see you put the latest Dim Gray video on here....solid band!
Psyched to hear about a Yay follow up! Thanks!
English electric full power is their best
Have you seen the line-up for Cruise next year? So many groups you really like... including Moon Safari.
It is truly an amazing line-up!
Steven Wilson in Manchester should be the hottest ticket in town Nathan... can't wait for the new album too. 🎵😍
Have you heard the new album from The Dave Foster Band? It might not be the proggiest album but i think it's an album youd definitely enjoy.
I haven’t heard it yet- will definitely check it out!
