- Ranking Pink Floyd studio albums.
I don't go into band history here, as no doubt you know the background to these albums inside out, but rather it's a personal take on where I'm at with this music at fifty.
Any feedback on how to improve much appreciated!
Cool, "Animals", bingo! Sonically & politically, it's a masterpiece!
A band with two masterpieces by my reckoning. Many people would say even more. Cheers!
Great ranking. For me their best would be Dark Side, WYWH and Animals, although it would be hard for me to put them in order. I would also have Meddle, Obscured by clouds and Piper at the gates of dawn up high was well.
Hey JC, thanks for popping by. I'm surprised by how well Obscured By Clouds has aged, it used to be way down the list. Zero skippers these days.
I interviewed the director of the movie of The Wall and said a really interesting thing about it saying, "That movie's really all about Roger Water's scream."
It does say a lot that scream. And I'm surprised he didn't chuck one in the Final Cut, along with all the sudden, ear-splitting snare drums. Cheers!
I really came around to the debut. Never been a fan of Interstellar Overdrive but the rest is cool and innovative. I also dig the compilation Relics and Obscured By Clouds
@@kevtruth I was hugely into Syd Barret as a teenager, and I still listen to the ‘Barret’ album now and then; my favourite of his solo albums. And yep, Relics picks up all the ‘best of the rest’. If only See Emily Play and Arnold Layne had been on Piper, but maybe there weren’t ready. But it’s still a classic. Cheers!
Great video, I love the Final Cut, it's high on my ranking. Your number 1 is the same as my number 1.
After watching your video I did give Ummagumma another go too (I probably listened to it more last week than I have nearly 40 years), and it almost went up a spot. Almost. Cheers!
Good review. I'm an old fan too. Once had all their albums. Note any more. Speaking of more. Nice call on More. Lava lamp as an album. Ha! Love it. I might try adding Embyo and Granchester and remove a couple of the instrumental bits for a custom More album. Like you, ATM has grown on me and is an enjoyable listen, start to finish. Try this: After listening to the suite, on side b play the songs in this order 1.Summer, 2.Fat, 3.If, 4. Allan's. I think is flows "whey" better. Totally with you on Wish You Were Here. Welcome sounds like a harsh Wall outake. Cigar is good, but is not in keeping with the atmosphere of the rest of the album. Darkside is a sonic wonder, but some songs have grown to be dull in this old fan's ears, namely: The Great Gig in the Sky, Money and Eclipse. While Animals is their most consistent, and a compelling album I think Roger's anger slowly destroyed the pastoral qualities of the band and that destruction begins comprehensively with Animals. For that reason, it can't be number one for me. I'd rather listen to Atom or Meddle.
Yeah I definitely listen to a custom-made More these days. And will try the Atom suggestion for sure, although the flow of that one never bothered me. But will see. And totally get your point about the anger on Animals, it's a fine line between what makes it work and it being a bit much. I tend to concentrate on just how funky it is sonically... they just never let up on that album. So many fun and clever little bits. Anyway, thanks for the feedback, and hope you pop back for some more; whatever that may be. Cheers!

@@stanleytesla1651 I’m sure many people will agree with you on this list. Solid. (I still can’t fathom my new found liking for Momentary Lapse. Between the best of that and the best of the Division Bell there’s one almighty playlist)
High praise for the criminally underrated Atom Heart Mother. I fully concur!
@@abrahamlincolnjones2922 I should have mentioned Ron Geesin who probably wrote much of it. Cheers!
Animals on top! Great 👍
For the rest of your list, it's completely different than mine, but who cares 🤷. Very enjoyable video ❤
Thank you! Appreciated. Had no end of sound issues on this one so glad you enjoyed

@@kevinbrown1893 Your list reminded me that for a long while I was pretty resistant to Dark Side of the Moon. Maybe I thought it was a bit mainstream and not as interesting as some of the others. Probably wasn’t til my 40’s that it hit me. And good to see some love for The Wall. I played that album to death. Thanks for posting!
My ranking:
1. Dark Side of the Moon
2. Wish You Were Here

The Zabriskie Point sessions would rank above Atom Heart Mother if they were an album
Interesting list. Like I say, there was a time when Piper and The Wall were very near the top of mine too, and Momentary Lapse squarely at the bottom. Atom has yo-yo’d, but I’ve always been fond of it. And good to see the Endless River up there too, as I gave it quite the knock. Thanks for sharing!
1) Animals or WYWH ... depends on my mood 3) DSOTM 4) Meddle
They really are a fine bunch. Be interesting to hear if you or anyone felt the same about The Wall as me. Cheers!

Hoorah, someone under the age of fifty. It'll make me look cool. No...? Damn it. But plenty of folk like The Final Cut. I had a time in my thirties when it suddenly really clicked with me. I was in a pretty dark place, so maybe it has a time and a place. These days I just find all those sudden snare drums a bit much. I'm easily startled. And The Division Bell at 2? Good to see. It gets a bit of an unfair knocking. But all the hippy sh*t piled at the bottom?... Ouch. But I get it. Thanks for sharing!
@OnlyForward12 Yeah I get why that's a surprise too. Division Bell felt like finding the sun after a deep dark hole of depression. Especially songs like Coming Back To Life & Take It Back. I just can feel the warmth shining through.
And that's the thing I quite like about Floyd. For every emotion there'll be a song or album that will resonate with you. 😊
@@mirry3279 Absolutely. And good to hear the sun is shining.
Great video interesting ranking
@@t1mos Thank you!
so far totally agree
Good to have you along. Cheers!
Anything after the Final Cut shouldn’t be on the list. Not really Pink Floyd without Waters.
nonsense
I respect your opinion of course, but I'm happy they carried on - to me Wright and Gilmour's combined sound was the heart of the band after Syd's departure. Plus I think there's some great tracks on the post-Waters albums. Each to their own. Cheers!
@@OnlyForward12 I respect yours and everyone else’s opinion too. I never question anyone’s musical taste. My comment was about Gilmour calling his band Pink Floyd and the effect that had on hoodwinking people into believing that his band is an extension of the PF that created Dark Side of the Moon, WYWH, Animals, and the Wall. All of which were primarily the creation of Roger Waters at least in concept and lyrics, which are what set PF apart from everyone else. Almost every band had a good guitarist and vocalist but no band had what PF had with Waters. So many of the young generation believe that. I can see why some people may like Gilmour’s music, but to me he’s like a cover for the real PF.
@RayMelville I hear you. And the band’s evolution is one of the things that makes them so interesting. This particular issue challenged the fans back then (big time), and no doubt will do so forever. Personally I get a lot out of all the eras, and even though I loathed Momentary Lapse at the time, I was ok with the trio trying to make a go of it after Waters, just as when Barret left. Yeah they weren’t the same, and I agree, were never going to reach the same heights, but I'd propose that no one band member has a right to strip the others of their identity, joy, and livelihood; not one they’d worked decades for. And I do think they did live up to the name; even more so as some of that post-Waters music, for me at least, continues to age really well. And from one comment received, does occasionally seem to speak to a new generation too. Either way, it’s great the band still inspires your kind of passion and conviction. And when I do a top ten song list I may talk about how the band inspires such cross generational devotion and debate, so I hope you’ll join me for it. And thanks for sharing your thoughts. Appreciated.
