To me it sounds like with the preludes you hear more of the strings, and less of the tone of the actual violin, its also less dynamic range it feels like. Very straightforward tone, but less depth, and not as full and complex as the kaplan vivos. Even in the recording theres a defined difference in the projection, and how it would cut through an orchestra as a soloist in its tonal characteristic. I'll have to give the Kaplans a try sometime soon! Going to my local violin shop as they are letting me try a bunch on my violin for free.

Woah. Just started playing a year ago. Never thought I would hear the difference as clear as day. Wonderful video. Prelude sounds more dull compared to kaplan. And much less sensitive to tone change which is suitable for beginner and less stressful for a starter 😂.

Great video and much appreciated. I like prelude much for the value. This is a go-to-strings for students' violins as it is stable and last forever. By the way, when you use the kaplan, the damper was still in the violin When you used the prelude, the damper was taken away. This probably have narrowed down their gap.

I own the prelude strings. they do just fine as i'm learning right now. sound good for what i'm doing. the prelude set produces a warmer tone. the kaplan strings i feel produce a crisper sharper tone. at that point i feel its personal preference on how you want your strings to amplify those sounds from the violin.

Hi Esther, I am not a professional, but I have been playing self-study for 4 years. I have been using the AMO Caplan strings for a while now and am very satisfied with that, but I also like to test other strings. My last purchase that I've been testing since last week is the Pirastro Passione that gives a rich warm sound. These have to be constantly tuned in the beginning, but otherwise they are not too bad. I just love a deep warm sound 😁💐😉

Hi, thank you very much for sharing your experiences! Thank to you I am trying to play with no shoulder rest, gradually. The result for now is that I lowered my shoulder rest while I use it, also because my chin rest has the right height from my collarbone to my chin. I feel less tension now in this way, so thank you! However, without shoulder rest shifting requires more training and there is the risk to develop tensions in the left hand, so one should be careful.
As an amateur player from about five years, I recently started to search a good set of strings because I also changed my violin. It would make no sense to use a 100$ set of strings on a 400$ instrument, so I was using thomastik dominant, and they were doing their job. My new instrument really adds color by itself to the sound, so I am substituting my strings one by one with Larsen virtuoso. I am satisfied with them, I will see how much they last. I watched some good reviews also for the thomastik PI and for the larsen il cannone. They really seem to give a punch in the projection of the sound with richness of harmonics, but they're too expensive for my purposes, since I mainly practice with scales and sudies.

I use Evah Pirazzi on my 18th century instrument with a Hill E which tends not to whistle. Dominants sound great on my 19th century instrument. It's always worth experimenting when you have good instruments and play to a high standard in order to get the sound that you want. The same set of strings will sound different on different instruments anyway. The cheaper strings are fine on entry level violins and are usually the best choice because of their stability and durability. They're also usually steel core which are favoured by fiddlers rather than classical violinists. An interesting video if not rather predictable in outcome. The most useful conclusion to be drawn from this is that the price is irrelevant.

The Prelude G string was trying to be a cello string with all those vibration. My student violin's factory g string also does that. I personally like the cello effect, as a beginner, but it also requires very good bowing otherwise you get badly punished to all your teeth and bones. Also, tuning is difficult even with fine tuners.

I mean there is the fact that this is a video, so sound quality can appear quite different. I can hear the difference nontheless, the kaplan strings project a lot more and are deeper richer and warmer. Anywho the preludes are violin strings, they do sound like violin strings and not bad at all, so unless you play in a upper mid class or higher class orchestra or are a professional soloist, they would do the job. I would go as far as to say that I would always buy some low budget 20$ strings with my 50$ zyex or whatever you play with, so you are set when an oopsie happens until you get to the next string buying time of the year.

I believe that cheap strings sound less nice, more metallic.. But you played so well that I couldn't tell the difference between the cheap and more expensive strings!

Prelude was my last set of string, now i'm on evah pirazzi, for me it's the "same".
The kaplan sound better, but like you said, as a beginner on studying violin, it's not really useful.

This is challenging because I only enjoy new strings from about day 3 on, after they’ve settled.

most strings take a few days to settle in, these right out of the box sound good, either pair

Is there any difference in the volume you can achieve with the different set of strings?

    • @jennifercarpentieri5795
      @jennifercarpentieri5795 4 года назад +1

Nigel Haines Well it depends, but the answer is no. It’s usually on the player where they set their bow on the strings, as well if you get really cheap ones, Volume would be very “Straight” not much of a difference, but overall no not really. Hope this Helped.

I am currently using Corelli Crystal strings, I love them for now :-) But really if you put just a cheapest rusty strings on your violin, you will sound amazing as usual :)

Sometimes it's good to mix it up because different violins, different personal tastes vary. Maybe Olive Stiff on G, Obligato D & A, and Larson E?

The 20$ strings sound like my 100$ violin, where the 100$ strings just warm my heart while listening. Really love your playing!

You are saying that her violin with cheap string sounds like a cheap violin, thats not true xD Her violin has way more power than a cheap instrument and a nice and full sound.
