The bridge usually sits on the imagery line that passes on the markings of the inner f-hole. And choosing the right bridge (hardest wood vs softer wood) for the violin, is best left to a luthier.
Sorry Esther I know that sounds like a wierd thing to say. But to a deaf individual it's a whole different culture. Deaf individuals have different ways of saying things.
I recently found your videos (after seeing your Korean beat-boxer collaboration vid). My daughter wants to begin learning the violin (she’s 10) and was excited to hear you began around the same age.
I seriously admire your online presence and consistency as a classical musician!!! I am a classical pianist myself and I’m working on this as well ❤️❤️❤️ You channel is AWESOME!! I look up to you 🙏
Hi Esther! After watching your review, I bought the violin! I also upgraded it with Red Sandalwood pegs [I crafted them], tailpiece and chin rest. - it looks beautiful. I then added a better bridge, and decided to try the new Thomastik Dynamo strings [expensive! $142 for the set].. and wow!! My violin sounds SO much more beautiful! I also bought a more expensive Pernambuco bow.. I am so happy now!!! Thank you for your wonderful review!!
Injust bought this violin not evenn5 minutes ago for my young daughter. As she has begun to start to wnat to play at school. Qnd has had her first performance. I wanted to get her something simple qnd easy with a decent sound. You are so amazing and thank you for the lovely music you played thay just confirmed the quality that is in the musician/ violinist. I hope my daughter enjoys this violin.
Alison reviews a $30 violin: Better than I expected. Twoset reviews a $30 violin: Trash. Ray reviews a $69 violin: OK for a beginner, but for best results you need a $10 million Strad. Olaf reviews a $ AUS 100 violin: Aaaaaagh! How could they ??!!..$400 worth of work later...OK now it's playable, but I can make you a lovely violin for just $50 more... Esther reviews a $90 violin: 9.5/10. Good value for money. Seems that buying a violin under $100 is gamble: sometimes you win and sometimes you lose.
The good reviews of the cheap violin came from people who actually wanted to try out the instrument and not just insult it. Ray as well, was curious of how much you can do with that. Two Set just wanted to trash talk the instrument for content and Olaf is a violin maker, of course he is gonna prefer handmade. If anything, this only proves that expensive instruments get good sound effortlessly but you can get as well good sound with a cheap violin if you try hard enough.
@@189Blake Maybe beginners should use expensive instruments, because they need all the help they can get, whereas professional violinists should use cheap instruments, since they are the most proficient at making an inferior instrument sound good.😁
TwoSet's violin was a DIY, though. Of course it would be trash. Lol. Their review might have been different if they already bought a built violin for the same price or even a bit more. But then again, it's TwoSet so they might also insult the built violin they buy. 😂
@@angeladominique I had in mind a video where they do review a cheap, built violin (not the DIY). That's the video where Brett is apparently producing a wonderful sound on the cheapie, but is actually being "dubbed" by Eddy on his quality violin, off-camera.
Alison Sparrow's reviews guided me to a Stentor II ($200+) to start. I too notice that talented players can make a basic entry-level violin sound great, so get an instrument and get started. If it doesn't sound wonderful right away, it's probably not the instrument's fault, it's more that the player needs practice and learning.
Thank you for taking the time to do an honest review for us. I definitely think I will be getting the Eastar Eva-2 though (less in price). I watched a different pro violinist give his opinion, he verbally put the violin down & didn't even play it a little. At least with your video, we hear how these 'cheap' beginner violins can sound in the right hands.
@@lynettejones3514 I bought a different violin. I am aware that there are people that are paid for their reviews and/or commission. But, the other 'reviews' for this violin don't stack up to her review. She actually played it. The other reviewers don't play the violin or even attempt it, they just put it down, call it a piece of trash, etc. I would rather hear a medium/excellent violinist play a crappy violin in a review video, instead of a non-player who knows nothing about them.
@unknownyoutuber7771 You only have to look at it to see how poor the quality is. To be fair, I've seen a lot of reviews where they do play it. Sometimes they change the strings & are honest & say they have & sometimes they change them & don't say. The only way of knowing for sure is to zoom in on the strings to check the brand. If I'm honest, I would probably say these strings weren't changed because the instrument sound and tone quality were really poor. The fact that a high-quality player can play this violin & the sound is still really poor shows just how impossible a task it will be for a beginner to get a decent sound out of it. The other thing is that the instruments sent to these reviewers are of a much higher quality than those that are purchased online. It has the desired effect of getting people excited, only to be severely disappointed when their own arrives. The soundposts are glued in, frequently in the wrong position, costing hundreds to fix. These issues weren't mentioned but should have been as they're incredibly expensive problems to fix & affect the sound quality greatly. I'm just glad for you that you didn't go down that route. Many have & it's not fair to these people that transparency is so often missing from these reviews. But then I'm guessing if these reviews were completely transparent, then they wouldn't be making money off them. They rely on the beginners' lack of knowledge regarding sound & setup to fool them into believing they're getting a great deal when they are just throwing their money away. After all, why would an unknowledgable beginner doubt a great player. That, for me, is what is so very unjust about these reviews.
Thank you so much for making this video! Wow - I’m am astounded! An incredible sounding violin for this price- wonderful playing as well! Just about to buy one for my wife! :)
great video! ive never touched a violin in my life. Played guitar 40 years, bass, drums, but not the violin. THis is the model i was looking at on Amazon. Eastar.
Thank you for your honest reviews of budget violins! Your finding matches what I have found through my hobby of fixing up neglected violins so they can be played again. Violins have gotten so economical and good that with a little bit of work on the bridge, the nut, the pegs and the peg holes, many of the budget violins can have good playability and sound quality. The more expensive violins usually do have better materials for nut, pegs and fingerboard plus better craftsmanship that makes maintenance easier.
@@sebastian._._______5056 yeah but even then I'd recommend renting because its about the same price, most of these cheap violins don't come assembled and don't even have grooves in the bridge
@@user-ww2nd4co2p not everyone can just get money like this every month maybe theyre going through something and they do have grooves and its just a beginner violin they might be back on their feet by then or they can get the $100 one which is better and they can switch the strings
Your obviously a very accomplished violinist or I wouldn't believe that so inexpensive an instrument such as this could ever hope to sound as well as this one does. Many times a cheap violin will sound better after its been fit with better strings, has the pegs and their holes worked, or the bridge and nut tailored to a more proper action height. I'm most impressed with your talents even if I'm still just a little doubtful about the violin. Thank you for your time and energies. Bravo!
I understood that the pressure of the bridge is what keeps the sound post in place, which is why (I think) many violinists only change one string at a time, and otherwise get a professional luthier to set up the violin. So does this violin have a sound post, or is it glued in place or what? Just curious.
Esther, I've been trying to leave the shoulder rest for good, since it was hurting me. Could you make some videos about vibrato without shoulder rest? Thank you for your videos, you play tango very well. :)

It matters a lot. This violin sounded absolutely horrible, and I was wincing throughout much of the playing. Esther, a good violinist, tried to cover up some of the issues in part by using a wide, open vibrato, but there's only so much lipstick one can put on a pig.
Absolutely not true. The quality of the instrument matters hugely. A cheap instrument will hold a player back significantly. Most beginners playing this instrument won’t be able to tell it has poor quality sound though. After a few months, if they last that long with it, then they will really understand why it’s important to buy or rent a good quality instrument.
Esther, I think that its not so much about the violin but about the player. You can make beautiful sounds out of any violin, even one made out of cardboard.
Was this violin completely unplayed ebfore the video? This reminds me on an experrience with a professional violinist, woho playd once my instrument; I was completely surprised, because it sounded much more better, the artist made an explosion. So: In which way will the sound of this violin grow? Is it possible? (My instrument added more value than 90$ ;) )
