      And it definitely has many advantages over the Sony AX53. What I have found is they actually work pretty good together - the G50 as my A Cam and the AX53 as my B Cam. This is not to say the AX53 is lesser of a camera at all, it just is easier as a setup and hit record type camera than the G50, which while in manual mode gives you a lot more control over your shot. In the end I have decided I love both cameras and am glad I purchased them.
      Is the G50 the better of the two? I would say that definitely depends on the camera operator more than the camera itself. For me, I’ll put the G50 ahead of the AX53 and feel very good about my decision.

    man I tell ya, both of these cameras are REALLY close! great video you did here. Just goes to show you all of the hype behind Sony cameras because while the AX-53 is a good camera, it doesn't blow the G50 out of the water by any means!

      Thank you very much. I agree wholeheartedly. The G50 can do almost everything as good or better than the AX53, but there are times where it is just plain easier to grab the AX53 and just get “the shot”. While, I do like the Auto Mode of the G50, that is not why I bought it. The Manual Mode is definitely the feature I think that sets the G50 apart from the AX53 the most. There are other features, but Manual Mode has to be the biggest one.

    Have you had the chance to try the new Canon Vixia HF G70? It looks like it has the same sensor size as the G50, so I expect similar image quality.
    Do you know of the G70 is much of an upgrade over the G50? Or is the 6yr old AX53 still highly competitive vs the G70?

    • @BrianBuckalew
      @BrianBuckalew  Год назад +1

      I have not had a chance to try the G70 and doubt I will - and here is the reason why: it does not have dual pixel auto focus (DPAF) which is a deal breaker for me based on my experience with the G50, therefore I cannot recommend this camcorder. That is lot to say you won’t find it to be an amazing camera for your needs, it is just that for me I have found without Canon’s DPAF it makes it almost impossible to keep an image in focus or keep the camcorder from focus-hunting in the middle of a shot. For me that makes the footage unusable. The best advice I can give is to rent one for a week from websites like lensrentals.com or a local camera store and see if it serves your purpose(s).

    Good test. On canon, you can twist the contrast to a minimum, it will become better in terms of dynamic range, overexposure and shadows. Do you have another video camera in the background, was this new G50 already matched with it?

      @BrianBuckalew  3 года назад +1

      Thank you - the camera in the back is my old "A" camera - a Sony HDR-FX7. I have not matched it with the FX7 as I am looking for a 4K camera to replace it with. The idea would be to have two 4K cameras to use together in my studio shots, but I really am not sure the G50 is going to be what I need it to be. @@BrianBuckalew I watched your new video. Unfortunately, I don’t know English, I’m writing now through a translator. Why didn't the G50 suit you? in your low light conditions, the G50's picture is noticeably brighter and sharper than the ax53. Only the contrast of the picture is too high, but this is adjustable, maybe lower the contrast right in the camera and remove a little sharp and it will be even better, although she did a good job in my opinion with these settings too

      Another great question! The Canon VIXIA HF G50 has the slightly bigger sensor and with the manual controls really allows for you to dial in for whatever the shot calls for (within the capabilities of the camera that is). It can open up to F1.8 where the Sony goes to F2.0, so another advantage for the Canon. So, based on the specs and on my tests, the Canon was better in low-light than the AX-53.

    I appreciate what you are doing and it is a good, useful comparison for me in the end. But it would be nice if you sweated the production a bit more. About half of the video is explaining why you had to reshoot parts of it due to the Sony being given a custom WB and the Canon going full auto. The belch is wonderful, eh? All of this can be made to disappear with movie magic by re-filming the correct portions and leaving out any mention that it was ever a problem. I get that there is a certain attraction to the videos being made in a low-key manner, but even then it is nice to set and maintain standards for your presentation.

    Sorry for the 101 question here, but at 0:12, could you explain how you have the external mic connected to the G50? I'm replacing a Canon HV20 mini dv which was great for my needs but just can't deal with tape + other issues anymore. I started the search with the Canon R800 but since that doesn't have a shoe for external accessories (I have an AT-822 external mic), I saw a step up would be the Panasonic HC-V770. But I got some room to push that so seeing what's in the next tier. Both the G50 and the Ax53 you've covered in this video are tempting, but really pushing my range. But I may just do one of them, and this video + comments are making me lean towards the G50

    • @shahryarrizvi1
      @shahryarrizvi1 2 года назад +1

      Alright since I've posted this comment, I've gone ahead and ordered an AX53. Amazon Warehouse had a complete AX53 w/ the only issue being slight damage to box only AX53 for $760, almost $350 off retail. The best open box/refurbished prices I was seeing on the G50 were around $900.
      As I mentioned in my earlier comment, I actually was a bit more drawn to the G50 after watching your video and reading all the comments. The G50 did seem to have the better picture *but* I know you did it with a lot of manual settings adjustment and I don't really have that expertise. So I'm not sure I could even get there w/ the camera. Plus, it seems the AX53's stabilization is really something. I mainly do tripod shots but do have to do handheld sometimes so good to know I have that to take advantage of.
      That said, since I am still within the return window of the AX53. I am watching an ebay auction with a G50 and a lot of other filmmaking add ons: Rode VideoMic Pro Shotgun microphone, SanDisk Extreme Pro 128GB SD card, UURig Top handle with cold shoe mount, BM Dual Charger and batteries, Libec ZC-LP LANC Zoom Control. I may throw my hat into the ring depending on how high the price gets. That said I'm not totally comfortable buying something without the ability to return, take advantage of warranty, etc.

    • @BrianBuckalew
      @BrianBuckalew  2 года назад +1

      If you are doing a lot of shots where you don’t need full manual control of your camera then the AX53 is the perfect camera for you. It will get most shots with very little need to do anything out but record. It just lacks some of the control you might want to have in less-than-optimal shooting conditions. But with a good set of video lights you will be able to get a decent shot anyway.

    • @BrianBuckalew
      @BrianBuckalew  2 года назад

      In all honesty, Boris, if it is just between these two camcorders I am picking the Sony FDR-AX53 because it is mostly auto and will allow you to just run-and-gun. Now, the G50 has an auto mode as well, but the camera is better in manual mode and depending on your capabilities as a videographer you may prefer more auto functionality and less manual. That is going to depend on your preferences as a camera operator. But if you were leaning towards Canon and had a little more $$$ to spend then I would recommend the Canon VIXIA HF G60 which has a 1” CMOS sensor and dual pixel autofocus. That is a superior camera to both of these and will give you better results for capturing fast-moving objects. I have a handful of videos on my channel where I compare the G60 to both the G50 and AX53.

      The AX53 is a great camcorder. Trust me - there are plenty of situations where I will reach for the AX53 over the G50, but in the end the manual mode on the G50 and the ability to record 10-bit 4.2.2 out of the HDMI port make it a more professional-grade camcorder.

      G60 has the 1” sensor - you can’t beat that, but it costs upwards of $1,600.00 and I can’t afford that right now. I will eventually own a G60, just have to sell a couple items first. Lol. If you are doing a podcast and have a budget around $1,000.00-range, you can’t go wrong with either the AX53 or the G50. The G50 does have the larger sensor and has manual mode - but manual mode may not be important to you. The G50 also is larger and feels better built. It you hold the AX53 in one hand and the G50 in the other you will notice how much better built the G50 is. But there is absolutely nothing wrong with the AX53. I would be fine with it if that was my only camcorder. I really mean that. In the end you have to ask yourself what features are most important to you.
