What's your favourite Mezcal? Thanks for watching Everyone! There are more tasting notes and info about the mezcals that we tasted in the ^^^Description Box Below the video^^^
Glen & Friends Cooking great video. I actually know of another mezcal that can easily gotten in Ontario but not directly from lcbo. If you want look up Mezcal Agua Santa. The rep is in Ontario often even having tasting at Cocktail Emporium. Can easily reach them via Instagram. They have 2 that I find are a good product and made in a sustainable way with the farmers.
Cool - I'll check them out.
I like Wild Shot mezcal but I am really a tequila drinker at heart.
Mezcal Amores Logia - Cenizo
Matthew Tavares Excellent choice. To all of you, like an Oaxaca born person that i am. Recommend the brands Convite, Cuish (no the agave, the brand), Los Danzantes. Great video! Thank you!
Welcome friends. We're hammered.
I loved that Julie was able to participate in this episode of After Dark.
I was today years old when I realized we're the friends in "Glen & Friends"
how sweet
Welcome, friend 😉
The “diesel” taste is what your memory goes to as it try’s to organize the flavour in relation to what you know. But it’s a hydrocarbon char due to the baking/cooking/burning of the agave. Very similar to Scotch peat in the sense the smoke flavour is hydrocarbon (Fuel) derivative. This is not a bad thing but can be off putting if you mind tells you that you are drinking petrol ... good review I have quite a few mezcal and always buy a new one when the lcbo has it. I like the Layenda Mezcal a lot as well as a few others like Agua Santa and Los Siete Mysterios
Thank you for sharing. I like having reference points.
you also have to take into account the terpenes in the plant. beta-caryophyllene, humulene, and limonene are a few that can lend a diesel flavor when extracted or burned.
At least you mention the ambivalence in purchasing a rare plant product.
The guy who told you about the agave that can’t be farmed is telling the truth. Where I come from, we farm espadin. But if you’re very lucky, you can find another type of agave called Tobala. I’m sure there are more but tobala can’t be farmed. They are typically smaller than blue agave but the taste is stronger. They can take up to 15 years. With the right climate, you can get lucky and grow them in just 10 but it is so worth it. I recommend if you ever get the chance, go to a village called San Juan del Rio, Tlacolula Oaxaca. It’s a bit isolated but the mezcal from here is grown and processed locally. Guaranteed to be some of the best You’ve ever tried
Good job you guys. You don't claim to be experts but your comments are all real and valid.
Huatulco, Oaxaca is my fav city in Mexico. Love the areas of Santa Cruz, La Crucecita, Arrocito, Playa La Entrega & the National Park. It's regarded as one of the cleanest & safest cities on the planet!
I’m from California and have seen these in friends’ homes a lot over the years. I think I’ve had ojo de tigres before and I agree with your guys’ assessment of it. It’s been a long time but I remember really liking its aroma. Great video guys, we love this stuff!
My go to right now is the ojo De Tigre. Great video.
How about some Mezcals vs Tequilas as far as pleasing to the palate goes? 🤤
Montelobos has a lot of nice dimensionality to it and is a mezcal i'll be buying again. Overall, its not spectacular at anything singularly but it's just very well put together and balanced. Interesting nose with some complexity, nice palate, well integrated smokey quality without being overpowering, some tropical fruit flavors and decent abv. You should definitely try Del Maguey Vida Classico which has more intense smokey and herbal qualities at a similar abv and makes a fantastic mezcal margarita.
WOW - how did you get them all back into Canada?
We were 10mL over the 'personal exemption' limit - the customs officer just welcomed us home to Canada and joked that he would be over for a taste.
So much to learn and to think about in each of these videos! There just is not enough time! (Or alcoholic capacity!)
Awesome bottle lineup!!
I have been a tequila lover for a long time but have only recently gotten my first bottle of mezcal, Montelobos. Dang, I should have tried this earlier. I do love the complexity of flavours. Diesel is not one of those flavours, for me. However, I have loved smokey Scotch whiskeys so I would probably have different associations with that flavour.
Next, I plan to try Sombra mezcal the next time the local liquor store has it in stock. My store usually has Montelobos in stock.
Jules is no light weight! Thanks for all the difficult research, both of you! :D
I’ve never had it, would you say that it could be interchanged with tequila in cocktails?
This is a favorite video for cocktails after dark series. I know theres too much (imho) charge toward smokiness. Depending on where the sippers’ from, that can be way too smokey for someone who does NOT bar b que over kiawe/mesquite wood each weekend. A balance for my palate is my goal. Yes Diesel is typically a compliment. I found this extremely educational. Funny thing is, beyond entertainment value, regional availability for Mezcal is going to range widely. I doubt viewers will find themselves with same six options.Well done! After more than six mezcal shots each.
My wife and I just came back from Cancun and picked up Montelobos Espadin Joven and Don Julio Reposado. Wish LCBO carried more varieties although it will be likely 2-3 times more than what you pay in Mexico :(
Don't know what to think of Mezcal. Tried it 2 times because the concept is interesting to me. Also, Tequila is often bottled at 38-40 percent and I prefer a higher proof for a fuller and longer lasting taste. Once I had it in a cocktail and I searched out a affordable yet not 'budget' bottle (burrito fiestro, cenzano agave). Tasted too rubbery and weirdly cheesy to me. I would like to try more but it's too expensive to buy a bottle I don't like.
Loving after hours!
I was waiting for this...
Excellent review, would you recommend Convite Ensamble Silvestre
Eye of the Tiger is ojo de tigre
That “diesel” taste …. I tend to relate it more to the burned rubber flavor. In good mezcal you can taste it as a smooth smokiness and in the making, makers try to showcase the mix of notes. best terroir, aromatics with a balanced smokiness
That was a cool video!
I have a bottle of mezcal I haven’t even opened lol waiting on your mezcal cocktails video
He did a video on one called Last Call I believe (made with mezcal instead of gin)
I live in Arizona so no surprises here.
Diesel flavour in Riesling wine? WTF? Must be a very special professional English sommelier language thing. Never heard that description being used to describe a (good) Riesling in German.
Here in Canada 'Diesel' is used, but in other English speaking countries I've heard 'Petrol' used instead. www.winespectator.com/articles/what-causes-petrol-note-in-aged-riesling-57107
It’s something more associated with Elsaß and French Riesling than German Riesling, we call it more petrol…I would say the smell is more like alcohol ie Geist or something than fuel but I find it very unpleasant it’s one of the reason I prefer cold weather white wines
“Agayne”…lol
When I was in Mexico they said anything over 38% means there’s added sugars not just blue agave
Yeah but this is Mezcal - it can be made with any Agave; and there are many agave with a higher sugar content than the Blue. Beyond that - you can take any spirit and distill it to 97% alcohol, and almost all distillers (mezcal, Tequila, whisky, Bourbon, vodka, etc) will distill to 70%+ then cut it with water to bottle strength and the final alc%. To the point that the same 'Brand' will have different alc% in different countries depending on local regulations. Even in the USA from state to state, Everclear will have a different alc by volume depending on state regulations - some states even ban it outright.
So that 38% - they were pulling your leg.
There are several dozen organic tequilas (no additives) on the market between 40-55 ABV.
I Love 400 conejos
No worms?
Overhype
LCBO sucks so bad for Tequila or Mezcal.
That tan....
I know - 2 weeks in the sun... and I'm still a pasty Canadian.
