Easily the best of the specials, that scene where Donna is just staring at that massive explosion coming towards her and is just tearing at the site of it, is just so creepy and touching. One of my new favourites of the show indeed.

It's just barely long enough that you genuinely have to ask if Donna was about to die

Oh by an absolute MILE, the amazing mix of comedy, drama, suspense, mind bending shenanigans and sheer tension is great. Plus respectfully tying in the timeless child and flux, both respecting the audience and Chibnall.
The direction is amazing too. A big problem with the last few years of Doctor Who is flat and uninteresting direction, but damn this episode is well performed, well directed, well written, well edited, the whole lot.
The other two had glaring and distracting flaws but this episode was far tighter, it knew what it needed to be and was just a damn good sci fi thriller episode.
Pacing was a smidge wonky at times but apart from that it's a damn fine episode of Doctor Who. Let's hope the following seasons with Ncuti follow more inline with the quality of this episode than the rest

There's something special about the episodes when the main actors play darker versions of themselves, from the Second Doctor and the Salamander, to the Eleventh Doctor and the Flesh Ganger or the Cyberplanner/Mr. Clever, and now the Fourteenth Doctor and the Not-Things.

    • @sinenomine2681

Having re-watched it just today, in "The Almost People", Matt Smith played a darker form of the Eleventh Doctor as the original Doctor in that episode more so than the ganger Doctor - ganger Doctor was pretty chill. He looked a little scary before stabilising, but I'm pretty sure it was meant to be the original Doctor who grabbed Amy by the arms so hard it hurt and screamed about the flesh's torment.

This has quickly become one of my favorite Doctor Who stories. The scene where The Doctor and Donna are having conversations with the Not-versions of each other lives rent-free in my mind. The first time I watched, I didn't pay super close attention to them because I was fixated on the sense of unease I was getting --- but I love the way Donna imagines the lives of her family without her while the Doctor simply imagines what would come of the Tardis. I know the show has been hitting us over the head with the Doctor's crushing loneliness for years now and you'd almost think the emotional impact should diminish, but the contrast and the parallels between the Doctor and Donna's fantasies were so well done and absolutely struck me in the heart.

I think we can all agree this episode was extremely intense and honestly one of the scariest episodes of Doctor Who. But what gets me is yes it waw scary for donna and the doctor. But can you IMAGINE what it was like the the pilot. Imagine her in the damn void, wandering around her stationary ship bored to tears when she sees something at the far end of the long hallway. At first she thinks its just the robot or maybe shes just seeing things or has finally gone mad all on her own. She walks closer and then she realises. Something is wrong. Its her at the end of the hallway, but there are no mirrors around to make this happen. She gets closer, still confused as to why this 'reflection' doesn't move with her. She then realises something awful, its not a reflection but a being. No TWO beings that look like her. But not exactly like her. They are wrong, malformed versions of herself. And they are looking at her like food.

This episode is so so good and important to Doctor and Donna's personalities! The Doctor is just so human and vulnerable. Shame that when they opened up, it was to their clones. But it also showed how safe they felt with each other.
It also confirmed that Donna knew the dark parts of the Doctor's memories, since the clone only copied what she knew, but she never talked about it. Which is also the flaw of the Doctor because he didn't realize it immediately. The clone forced him to open up but real Donna would never. And it's humanizing to see that he didn't see pass it.
Assuming that it's because Donna knew how much it hurt the Doctor, she never forced him to talk about it like in the near end. She just wants to let him know that he's safe and he can rest in the future.

This is one of the more interesting episodes in the whole series. This is one of the very few times we actually see The Doctor outwardly and openly AFRAID. One of the only times we see a completely perplexed, almost powerless Doctor, no Sonic, No TARDIS, no idea what he's facing, and the possibility that he may also get Donna killed. And then made vulnerable by the duplicate Donna's mention of the Flux.
My least favourite of the 3 specials, but still a marked improvement over Series 11, 12 and Flux.
