The z6 keeps getting better, I have been shooting RAW with it for a few weeks the quality is amazing.
If you are pro, but hobby people don t need
if you are interested in videography, but rest of the people don't even need a camera
@@grooyam for raw video u need expensieve computer and there is no reason to shoot raw. With nlog is more than sufficient.

I am not saying RAW video is bad, in fact its amazing but its kind of clean looking, its not like Magic Lantern which has that organic film look and sweetest highlight roll off I ever seen from a camera.
Can't get over how good the RAW anamorphic footage looks!!
I will wait on this upgrade until Davinci Resolve supports Pro Res RAW! Still an amazing and under rated camera without it though!

Wow you happened to make a video combining the 2 things I wanted to see. The Z6 RAW video and that cheap anamorphic. What adapter were you using to mount the lens?
I bought a Z6, it's my favorite image quality I've seen out of a digital camera. Extremely clean at high ISO, beautiful focusing experience with adapted manual lenses, IBIS works a treat. The only trouble was with non-Art Sigma F mount lenses and the FTZ-but with Z glass or recent Nikon F lenses, 9/10 strongly recommended.

Maybe someone in the comments can answer this one: what was the point of the CFX firmware update and using CFX cards if RAW recording is only capable with an external recorder writing to SSD?
And then maybe someone can answer why is Kai using Nikon anyway? Did anyone actually switch to a Z6 for video production because of the RAW upgrade as the cheapest(?) solution for shooting in RAW?

... Nikon camera PLUS the Atoms recorder equals RAW. Why have we become accustom to external raw recording? I think that it defeats the purpose of a compact camera, a lot.

Imagine the processing power and the cooling capabilities these small mirrorless cameras would need to record 4K RAW internally. I'm sure someone will figure it out, but I doubt that it won't come with any downsides.

Its because of the ProRes Raw licensing. The licensing fee of in body RAW video recording is high Thanks to RED patents. Adding that in the camera would add up the cost significantly
WOW 1 year ago a camera like this would cost you about 40 K and today people are complaining that it is too big. I mean it is smaller than the typical dslr and a Flash on it.
@@danielvilliers612 what? We had the bmpcc from 2018 which was actually a bit cheaper. Sure it's an innovative camera that brings raw to a camera that can shoot photos well too, this being one of the greatest hybrids, but what you're saying is just false.
How does using raw output affect the battery compared to N-Log? I found I went through three camera batteries and three atomos in a day's shoot.

Was the update not for free?
You did not make any anamorphic video in this test. The sirui 50mm lens is made for crop sensors. You have to put your video camera in crop mode. Then stretch your image from 1.33x to anamorphic.
Anamorphic doesn't necessarily mean widescreen, it just means the recording is distorted along one axis.
While yeah, traditionally anamorphic lenses have been used to film widescreen content on standard-sized film/sensors, some people want to use anamorphic lenses for the glare and blur effects. And this lens seemingly covers that purpose well for 16:9 full-frame content.
can the z6 shoot anamorphic without the atomos (is that only for prores raw?)? the gh5 does have an anamorphic mode for shooting video. was wondering if z6 does too or that is why you need the atomos

Does anyone know if there's an adapter to get the MFT version onto a regular Nikon F mount? Or a Canon EF? I want to get some of these for either a RED with a Nikon mount or a BMPCC6K with the EF mount.
I find the z50 video shockingly good. Crisp and stable picture with good AF, white balance, exposure and natural colors. I honestly thought this z50 was a bad camera...looks like I was wrong.

I'm trying to get my head around the compromises that shooting through an anamorphic entails. OK, it's a wideangle lens in the horizontal plane only, but from your footage it looks pretty mild. 1.3x or so? For that you shoot through another four elements (probably), with all the flare this adds. No hood, either.
Tell me again the advantages. Is it just for the elliptical shape of the oof highlights? It's not for the added cost, weight, bulk, flare, distortions.
you mentioned de-noising, would you share which software you're using for this on the Nikon Z6 raw footage?

How’s the battery life on the Atomos while recording raw? It’s pretty poor in general and I would expect more power draw with a higher data rate.

Thanks for the video Kai!! What would you recommend for a budget film production. I had my eyes on the Rokinon Xeen 35mm and stumbled upon your video. Would this lens be a better bet to get that cinematic look or should I go with the Xeen 35mm?
Why would anamorphic cause the loss of waveforms and peaking? I have never recorded in it before but I have edited such footage, and waveforms are still very workable, Peaking should also still work.

one question I have that maybe someone here can answer for me is in regard to the Sirui 1.33x anamorphic … they are APSC DX so if the camera was in DX mode to film wouldn’t it take care of the vignetting that was shown in this video when cropping to 16:9 is mentioned? Wouldn’t it be more beneficial to film in DX so you can get the true anamorphic aspect ratio? EDIT: I realize why now … by shooting in full frame you can “squeeze” a little extra squeeze factor out of it since this lens covers a larger area than APSC.
Just got mine back from Nikon (free if bought the Filmmaker’s Kit back in February) and shooting my first ProRes RAW...
From what I hear, 1 min = 3GB so not much compression... and FCPX doesn’t support it yet... you have to manually set the 202 and wide gamma...
But this IS the “game changer” promised!

yea but for some reason they're designed with a hyperzoom lens in mind so they all have tiny sensors and shitty image quality. i can't imagine who buys these things other than broadcast television channels
@@typoded If you're talking about broadcast cameras yes : they surely have pretty damn little sensors (1/3 or 2/3 inch) but there still are C200, C500, panasonic EVA, Sony FS5, FS7 with S35 or FF sensors. You should definitly check them

No wonder the Z6 is selling out.. its a phenomenal camera for stills AND a SUPERB video camera. Nothing Sony has can match, neither Canon.

I have a z6 and love it, but in my experiance no DSLR has a true "RAW" hdmi output. The "RAW" adjustments don't look anything near as good as a true raw like CinemaDNG or Redraw. The highlights are always greyed out. When you bring them down to a nice exposure the blacks get crushed. They're not even as good as a B-raw files. The Atomos Nikon setup is also a big pain in the ass workflow wise. It's hard to switch rigs or go from Glidcam to Gimbal to shoulder rig to tripod. Also I honestly hate the atomos interface.

I’ve got this equipment myself but can’t really make up my mind when it comes to choose the perfect cage to rig the camera, ninja, a microphone... the set up you had looked pretty interesting.. just very curious and ready for some advice. Just a heads up to anyone considering this camera in the US. If you buy the international model in the US Nikon US will not do the update for you, they will send it back. You have to show proof of purchase from an authorized reseller.

Due to the Z's huge mount and small flange distance you can adapt nearly every lens mount out there.

That’s the edge of the lens lol, it’s anamorphic so it’s supposed to be cropped at 2.39:1, he’s showing the result in full frame

9:31 Personally, I'm not really interested in extreme pixel peeping, extreme testing and worrying about how my photons are. I just want to go out and shoot and have fun (while making nice photos along the way). If there's something not exactly perfect, so what. Life is short and I'm not going to spend my time worrying about stuff like that.
When I am in the field, I agree. When I get back to the computer, I enjoy pixel peeping to see all the details in the images that I didn't notice when I took the photo.

Good effort.
Anamorohic lens are usually less sharper than the regular spherical lens and it was intended for dreamy and much more cinematic feeling.
Every time I see a wonderful vlog like this, (thanks Kai), I feel a bit stupid for my buying decision I was Oh So Careful about when I bought my Canon EOS 70D. It's HDMI out puts out video with a brown border added around it. A bit crap, that.

blackmagic has already given us raw internal recording (no extra monitor needed) with anamorphic.
to be honest, the anamorphic flares look the same like fcpx built in flare effect :D
I'm waiting for Kai to do more of the older cameras photography like the Nikon D700/Canon 5D Classic and ii/ etc. Plus when is he going to mention Magic Lantern and he can purchase a very affordable Canon 600D with the Magic Lantern installed, and you got a very affordable Raw Video setup.
