So now as it is Dec. 2023, I went with Small Rig attachments to my cage for handle, swivel adapter for monitor, and side handle with magnetic allen key slot. I went with the JLwin cage instead as it looked nearly same as SmallRig and just as strong but its bottom screw has flat screwdriver slot and also allen key slot in middle. Thanks for a great review. I liked the idea of monitor on handle which I had not thought of until your video. Great idea. The mini follow focus available are now smaller in design from Small Rig.
good choice! I don't use this camera or rig for filming anymore but I have very similar set-ups for my Lumix and Sony cameras. I still always put the monitor on the handle
at last ! a great video showing all the bits that make up a fully tooled up rig for the Z6. I’ve been faffing about for ages trying to work out which bits to get so this has solved that for me. Top work - going to order all the bits now !
Thanks for this. I've returned to your video several times, taking ideas from it for my rig, regarding SmallRig components (They're in transit as I write). I also have the Røde Wireless Go system (which I recently reviewed and demonstrated making a location kit), so the one thing I forgot was an extra cold shoe. Just ordered that. I'll mount it onto the Ninja V cage I decided to buy ... just for extra protection. Looking forward to testing it all. I think the top handle will really help with shooting low viewpoints.
Hi, I also have a Zed 6. Recently bought a SmallRig cage like yours on eBay. Sourced from them in China. It showed up minus the small bottom retaining screw. I contacted them, complimented them on their delivery and the great price that I got. And mentioned the screw wasn't in the package. They immediately sent me a pictogram of the unit with the red circle around the missing part which I confirmed. That was late last week, I was pleasantly shocked (yesterday which was Monday) to get a FedEx package from them with the missing screw. I have never had customer service to this degree in my whole life! All of their pieces are exquisite, modular and affordable. I bought the small side handle like you did, just using the strap on the other side. I'll probably get a NATO rail handle, but right now just using that mount point for my f6 FeelWorld screen with the same flexible screen ARRI connector. I did want to get a cage to protect the screen, but they don't make piece yet. A competitor does for $40. I am very happy with the quality level, completely thought out layout and ergonomics of the cage and accessories. Was pleasantly surprised to see your post with most of my pieces there. You can't go wrong with this setup, it's one incredibly flexible rig.
they are great. I have a wooden handle with a record button for Sony and it stopped working - they just sent another one to replace it immediately! Great products and great customer service! I love their stuff

Thank you very much for this. I have been using a gimbal for filming, but it's so darn heavy. Frankly, the gimbal hurts when I use it all day, so am rethinking my system. I really appreciate this information.
I know what you mean! Gimbals are breaking my back! This set up is actually heavier but I don't use it in the same way as gimbal - it will never be as steady as a gimbal either
that wooden handle is nice, would also work as a cheap substitute on the new hasselblad 907 x camera, which is very thin, this is of course excluding the new c f v ii 50 digital back which fits it; especially if you were not interested in the extra controls the o.e.m. control grip offers, the wood finish would complement the cameras' finish nicely.
Thanks Pav, this is great, I've been searching for a video like this for a while and this is spot on truly. I have been debating whether to go with a small rig setup like this or a gimbal. I shoot mainly weddings. Your input is appreciated! Cheers
set up like this and a gimbal are two completely different things. I still use gimbal when I need to add motion to my shots. This is only great for bulking up the camera to remove micro jitters from hand held shots but makes it all very heavy for shooting longer periods of time
Recently discovered your channel and I gotta say, I’ve been binging your content like an addict. Your presentation style is so energetic, packed with information, and easy and enjoyable to watch and listen to. I’d love to see some of your professional work, specifically shot with your Z6 rig. Where can I do that? Thanks, cheers!
Did you find it difficult to use it for photography? I’m probably getting a Z6 soon, and while it will primarily be for video, I might wish to use it for photography some and would prefer a rig that doesn’t require being entirely broken down to use for photos. I’m thinking for my use I can just skip the cage and most of the other accessories and just get the top handle to hold a microphone and recorder. Edit: Just got to the part where you mentioned photography. Sounds like the cage doesn’t much impede it.
Thank you! There is an issue - this cage isn't available anymore. I guess it's diescontinued. Smallrig offers 2 different cages for z6ii at this moment. I'm currently learning about rigs and since I have z6ii I'll probably go with Smallrig 2824.
And I totally agree about overall height of the rig when the external monitor is attached to the top handle. Please tell why you prefer to record on the Ninja instead of recording internally? I think external monitor is definitely a great addition. Currently I'm also looking at Atomos Shinobi which doesn't allow to record into itself but can be used as an external monitor. Again thank you for this video!
cage 2926 fits both Z6 and Z6II. I use Ninja V with Nikon because this is the only way to record in N-Log with Z6, also I use Sony and Lumix cameras sometimes on the same job and I can record to the same SSD when swapping from one camera to another, this way I have all the files from one shoot on the same SSD. Also the Apple ProRes format is much easier to edit on the mac.
@@PavSZ Thank you! Makes sense about N-log. As for me I don't film my videos in raw format. And so far I only used Z6ii with OBS Studio at home. I'm not happy with my phone video quality, thus I want to switch to z6ii when I shoot cars. That's why I need a nice and not too expensive rig for more stability and accessories though z6ii has internal stabilization. So since I'll start with recording internally on the camera I'm not sure i I need an external display. I like the fact external display is much bigger than integrated one. I may buy it later, but not sure if I really need Ninja. Maybe I'll find a used one on eBay of FB Marketplace. PS: I see with 2926 you still need to remove strap triangle mounts from the camera. I think I'll go with 2824 instead.
I just realized my recently purchased Smallrig 2824 cage doesn't have 3/8" hole, just 6 identicaly 1/4" holes. I'm trying to figure out how to secure the baseplate to this 2824 cage in order to prevent cage from rotating on the baseplate. I see Smallrig sells many baseplates with 2 screws - 1/4 and 3/8. It would be perfect in your case, but in my case I can't use 3/8" screw. I'm going to order a baseplate soon. I hope I'll find a way to securely attach it to my Smallrig 2824 cage...
you are commenting on a video from few years ago. I haven't used Z6 for at least 3 years now. There will be some b-roll filmed around the time this video was released with it when I was reviewing Nikon mount lenses. Hard to tell which video right now
Thank you so much for sharing your setup, Pav! :-D I set up my rig similar to your setup, but am struggling with the fan noise of the Ninja V. Did you get rid of the noise by moving the microphone that bit to the side and using a deadcat? - Looking forward to hearing from you. Thank you! :-)
Thank you for watching! I don't usually use Rode mic to record crucial audio with on the rig but I find that I get the best results by having the monitor always slightly behind the mic (it will be naturally when both are mounted on the cage/handle like in my video). Rode video mic pro is very directional and it will always pick more sound from in front of it than the side. My Ninja V is not particularly loud anyway. Dead cat would make zero difference with the fan noise anyway.
Hello Pav Thank you for excellent instructional video. Question for you. You mentioned that you can not connect Rode external mic to Z6 body and wireless mic to Ninja both at the same time. Did I get that right or am I mistaken? Can you not have both audios recorded at the same time, the audio on Ninja will be in its own separate channel and audio from connected mic will be embedded with HDMI output is it not? Can you please explain .... perhaps I am not understanding this right. Thanks for your time. Regards.
I'd have to rewatch this to see what I said exactly then, it was long time ago but ... in a nutshell , theoretically, you can do that. Ninja V can record multitrack audio. So the audio from HDMI and mini jack separately, theoretically. I would have to try it to confirm
as good as that of my Sony a7III - I do all my talk to the camera with Z6 on this channel with AF on. Check out my review of Nikon 24-70 f4 lens on Z6 - that really shows how it works

yes, gimbal is much smoother option. I use this for the hand held work that can have a little bit of hand shake like interviews or when the edit is quick, b-roll, that I can stabilise in post or slow down. The weight only helps to loose the macro jitters from the hands, not make it super smooth
Hi! Good shots! Please tell me, at what negative temperatures did you use Atomos Ninja V? Now it's winter, I think in what temperature range can I shoot with it and Z6?
@@PavSZ last question I promise, or maybe you can do a follow up video, but how does it feel in the hands and how does it affect the camera controls ? Never tried any camera with a cage so would be interesting to know!
@@adood84 The cage is designed for Z6 so there is easy access to the battery door and all the buttons. It makes the camera a little heavier but it fits very well in hands. You can't use the strap anymore as you have to remove one of the strap holders to attach the cage to the camera through it.

First of all you can record the nikon audio and the atomos audio at the same time there are four chanels of audio in the atomos . And in the box from the z6 there is a plastic peace theat screws in the other hole not the hdmi one without removing the rubber peaces and its recomended to be put on if you are using hdmi cables so you won't damage the camera especially on a gimbal
Why would you want to record Nikon audio as well - it will certainly be lower quality than the audio recorded directly into Ninja V - I have proven that in several tests in my reviews before. I wasn't aware that there was an add on when using HDMI cables - need to check the Z6 box out. What do you mean by "other hole, not hdmi"? what other hole?
So you can have sound from 2 microphones at the same time and they are recorded in the ninja And by other hole i ment the opening for the audio the plastic part is screwing in there and protects the camera from every cable that you plug in the camera
Do you have trouble with the Ninja fan noise showing up in your audio having the mic so close to the monitor? I just got the Ninja and fan noise is loud.
@@PavSZ Thanks. Apparently it maxes out at 8 bit when filming in 4k 60 fps. Would it be possible for Nikon to enable 10 bit in 4k 60 fps via a firmware update? Not sure if Nikon has ever done something like that.
Just got the R6 and it runs hot all the time feels like a cellphone when using it burns/stings your hand. Going to return it and wait till Canon fixes it. Do you recommend the Nikon Z6 over the Sony a7iii? Or should I wait for the new versions of that? So far I like Sony because of affordable lens selection and camera bodies.
I have both a7III and Nikon Z6 - right now I do prefer Nikon but you are right. There is much bigger choice of lenses for Sony. a7IV might be coming very soon though - this would bring the price of a7III down
Hello Sir . Thank you for sharing your expertise. I am planning to get Z6 as my first mirrorless camera but would love to know how well the kit lens work. If not any alternative budget friendly lens that outperform the kit lens ? I uses D5300 so wanted to stick with Nikon Ecosystem since i have DX lens. By the way SUBSCRIIBES AND LIKED !!!
thanks for the sub!!! The 24-70 f4 Nikon S "kit" lens is really good - Here is my review of it: ruclips.net/video/8vQ5CU5McLE/видео.html DX lenses will work via FTZ adapter but Z6 will automatically crop
Respected Sir, thanks for your video from the owner of Z6. Could you please give me approx cost of rig used in this video (excluding ninja v & mics) manufactured by smallrig ? Thanks in advance.
6:43 "No movement at all" LOL. It's flexing all over the place. When your rig is so heavy, you need stiff connections to the handles. 12:00 "It's heavy, but it's quite solid. There's nothing wobbling." It is very wobbly indeed. Have you looked at your own video before posting? Your rig is amplifying the vibrations from your hands. It may be OK for what you are doing; but I would be looking for something else - maybe a proper camcorder. Your photo setup is so much more solid. I like it.
it only looks like it in this video. I can tell you that once tighten this rig is rock solid and nothing twists or moves. I have been filming a lot in last few years hand held with this rig and rigs like that. I'd say that it is the opposite. The weight helps to reduce the micro jitters, especially when combined with the stabilised lens and camera's IBIS.
@@PavSZ I believe you have a steady hand. Of course you won't move the rig as violently as in the video. I got carried away, sorry. I like to see this thing handled in the real world, I really appreciate it. Thank you!

Has anyone had problems running out of storage on your pc using a ninja v? I’ve heard file sizes are much larger and am wondering if I should get extra storage on the pc before buying the atomos
if you use 1Tb drive in Ninja V and fill it up every time you go out shooting with it then yes, you do need extra storage. I edit straight from Ninja V SSD drives and bin the master files after I have exported the final edited video
hey there bud dose the atomos ninja 5 fan nose interfere with the shot gun mic and do you no if the pre amps in the atomos much quieter than the cameras for better audio quality?
It is OK especially if the Ninja V is behind the front of the mic. Pre-amps of Ninja V are much better than the camera's. All my audio on my video on my channel is recorder directly to Ninja V
Hi. I've just got my Ninja V (in addition to Z6) and I was quite disappointed by a huuuge HDMI delay when shooting 24/25/30 fps. It's tremendous, about 9 frames (!), which makes hard to focus or follow even slowly moving objects. Ofc I can shoot in 50/60fps, the delay'll be still 9 frames, but in terms of seconds it'll be twice shorter, however Z6 doesn't shoot 4k in 60fps. So I have to choice either 4k or 60fps. Is there any workaround with this issue?
I have the same problem since I got my Z6 - nobody ever talks about it but apparently that's how it is with Z6 and Ninja V. Really strange as it was a first camera offering RAW and it was bundles with Ninja V (still is!). I have tried all kinds of cables from cheap to the most expensive that I could buy - no difference. I don't think there is a fix for this. I'd love to know if Z6II is still suffering from that problem. No other cameras that I have or have reviewed have any delay what so ever - just Z6 😕
@@PavSZ Thanks. I thought maybe I do something wrong, because really, no one talks about this issue. By the way, are you just used to this delay, so it is ok for you now? Or it'll annoy one forever? :D
@@archonoff I just got used to it ... as much as I can. I'm lucky as I also use Sony cameras - if it is too much to handle with Z6, I'll switch to Sony. To add to it. The delay only shows during preview - there is no audio delay in the recordings (9fr delay). However when using Z6 as a webcam that delay shows to anyone on the other side :( very annoying

not on this rig, no
First of all you can record the nikon audio and the atomos audio at the same time there are four chanels of audio in the atomos .
So you can have sound from 2 microphones at the same time and they are recorded in the ninja
And by other hole i ment the opening for the audio the plastic part is screwing in there and protects the camera from every cable that you plug in the camera
which ibis do you choose for video?
which Ibis?
@@PavSZ no ibis?
Do you have trouble with the Ninja fan noise showing up in your audio having the mic so close to the monitor? I just got the Ninja and fan noise is loud.
not really. I usually use it outside with a mic on the cage so it never picks it up. I'd use Wireless Go most of the time anyway
Hi, when using Ninja, is it possible to shoot 4k 60 fps in 10 bit or more?
Ninja V can only record what camera is giving it, so if the camera can do 4k 60fps in 10bit over HDMI than the answer is yes
@@PavSZ Thanks. Apparently it maxes out at 8 bit when filming in 4k 60 fps. Would it be possible for Nikon to enable 10 bit in 4k 60 fps via a firmware update? Not sure if Nikon has ever done something like that.
@@TheDude-vx6wn probably not
Just got the R6 and it runs hot all the time feels like a cellphone when using it burns/stings your hand.
The 24-70 f4 Nikon S "kit" lens is really good - Here is my review of it: ruclips.net/video/8vQ5CU5McLE/видео.html
DX lenses will work via FTZ adapter but Z6 will automatically crop
Respected Sir, thanks for your video from the owner of Z6. Could you please give me approx cost of rig used in this video (excluding ninja v & mics) manufactured by smallrig ?
Thanks in advance.
approx $250 (I'm guessing from memory though)
Thank you!
@@fuglbird this was filmed all hand held using almost identical rig on Sony a7III and 85mm lens (cage, handles on both sides and Atomos Ninja V on top): ruclips.net/video/7I6orZ-ORmY/видео.html
I have a question that if you won’t put your camera on a tripod, do you still need to use the lens adapter support?
no, I don't even put it on sometimes when using camera on the tripod and want to change from F to Z lenses during the shoot
@@PavSZ thank you for the tip! I’m going to try recording in prores hq to hopefully preserve a little more space on the drives.
@@syncryptic_2233 proRes HQ takes more space. I record everything in proRes LT, don't need more for web delivery
hey there bud dose the atomos ninja 5 fan nose interfere with the shot gun mic and do you no if the pre amps in the atomos much quieter than the cameras for better audio quality?
It is OK especially if the Ninja V is behind the front of the mic. Pre-amps of Ninja V are much better than the camera's. All my audio on my video on my channel is recorder directly to Ninja V
@@PavSZ THATS COOL I USE A PRE AMP IN TO MY CAMERA AND I WONDER IF THE NINJA PRE AMP GIAN IS QUITE ENOUGH TO REPLACE IT
DO YOU USE A DENOISER IN POST BECUASE WITH MY PRE AMP INPUT INTO CAMERA I DO NOT HAVE TO TOUCH THE AUDIO FILE IN POST
@@brandonjay_gotem no, I only compress it and add a little bit of EQ
@@PavSZ OK COOL
@@PavSZ thanks. I'm going to write to Nikon support. Looking forward to see what they'll reply.
@@archonoff let me know what they say please
Hi, i want some help. I have z6 and video has stuttering when move the camera. What can i do?
sounds like your shutter speed is wrong - set it to be always double of your frame rate.
60 fps = 1/120 shutter speed etc.
@@PavSZ Thank you very much!!
What lens were you using in the Video?
did you mean what lens this video was filmed with??
Sigma 50mm f1.4 and Sony 90mm f2.8 Macro
@@PavSZ yes. I really loved your video. Have watched it several times. Do you have any other videos? Stay safe. Alan

I have the Neewer Follow Focus but am having trouble installing it on my Nikon Z6 camera. Suggestions? Thanks, Alan

The rail system I have does the trick for me.
You also need good gears on the lens. i use gears from Zhiyun gimbal follow focus - they are a little bit tighter.

nothing wrong with it. I clean sensors daily on all of my cameras
