- Hello Friends!
Last weekend I went to Los Angeles to visit my pal, Hannah, go to the LA Fabric District (sometimes known as the LA Fashion District, which is the wider area, the fabric district is a specific part), the Long Beach Antique Mall, and the Huntington Library. It was an action packed weekend all over LA and I thought I would bring you guys along for select highlights of it. We also went to BeetleHouse LA, which is supposedly a Tim Burton themed restaurant... which wasn't so great. Ah well! The weekend was very fun and much sewing related stuff was purchased!
I do hope that you enjoy!
Here's the run-down, in case you want to skip around:
00:00 - LA Fabric District
09:45 - Our review of the BeetleHouse LA Restaurant
13:09 - The Long Beach Antiques Mall
18:05 - The Huntington Library and Gardens

"I never need to buy fabric again." Laughs in "I have enough yarn now"
I say that every single time I stock up on what ever it I need for what ever Project I’m making in the many Crafts that I do. It never fails. I’m always missing something or the other. 😁😁😁
Watching those striped silks being pulled off of the roll was so satisfying.
Also, I was amused by all of the portraits of ladies in exceedingly ornate dresses frolicking outdoors, because clearly the best thing to wear to play outdoors is 15 yards of silk.
Those are Gainsborough. The entire 18th century aesthetic is embodied in his work, magnificent clothes in a magnificent landscape.
Also, outside was cleaner than inside back then.
I saw this comment before I saw it in the video. OMG seeing that silk roll was so much better than I was anticipating!
Maybe that's where "dress for the life you want" comes from
By the way, if you don't have enough space for your fabric, I volunteer my closet. I wouldn't even use the fabric, just take it out and pet it.
hahahahah I'll keep that in mind!
I volunteered as tribute 🙋♀️
Lol!
Does anyone else just bust out and dance to the music that Noelle adds into her videos? No? Just me? Ok.
“I never need to buy fabric again” 🤣🤣🤣🤣 Noelle, I want to go shopping with you for the vicarious joy, lol!
"Have you eaten on a plane?" Lmao.
My husband was an airline mechanic (now he works on fueling trucks), he even said that was an epic burn.
I almost spit out my drink.
Hahahahahah :-) I'm glad you both enjoyed that!
Your fabric district adventures are always some of my favorite videos. This was absolutely the kind of easy, friendly content I needed today. Can’t wait to see your abundance of riches when you have them ready to share!
soooon!
It looks so “normal” (with the exception of masks). Just what I needed today!
Same for me, it's always a treat to see a fabric district vlog, I live in Poland and we don't have anything like that in here.
You love your stripes, don’t you?😀 I have never seen a sewing machine parts store...so many machine feet! Loved the antique/vintage collections. I can almost smell the roses.
It's Slate!... classic! Fabric buying justification is real!
You make me wanna drive from San Diego to L.A. just to go to Fabrics to Fabrics.
That was wonderful!! I love going to the Huntington Library as a child we used to go the 1st or 2nd Sunday in May after Church for my Grandmother's birthday. I loved the Duck Pond. One year mom had me dressed in a full white dress (late 1950s I think the dress had blow-up Intertubes as hoops) with white patent leather shoes. I got too close to the mud around the Duck Pond and slipped in. I didn't get to see Pinkie and Blue Boy that year.
I loved the paintings and if I got lost they knew they could find me in the Pinky and Blue Boy Room. My Grandmother told her sister (my Great Aunt Sis) that I liked those paintings and she sent me framed prints of Pinky and Blue Boy.
This is so sweet! My friend grew up walking distance from the library and she was regaling me with memories of when they used to let children ride their bikes on the grounds.
The detail on the dresses in some of the paintings are amazing. The flow and wrinkles, the highlights and shadings are so life-like. Thanks for sharing!!!
Wow! That 1960s/70s singer in the antique mall looks EXACTLY like my grandma's. Even the cabinet that it's in.
OMG GAINSBOROUGH!!!
My horrible day is redeemed by Art. 😃 Thank you Noel. 💐
For y’all unfamiliar, he was a society portraitist of the Georgians. Amazing painter.
Shopping with Noelle
Glad you enjoyed!
Thank you for taking us on your trip! There were 2 black, white and silver/grey striped silks that I am absolutely lusting over, if I ever make it to LA the fabric district is top of my list to visit!
A fun adventure to accompany you all on. Thanks to all you knowledgeable Costubers, now when I go to art galleries and museums I obsessively look at the clothing and textile details in EVERYTHING. And oh how well I understand the “What have I done?!” of the post fabric-buying-spree-high hangover. 😆
Fabric, gardens and art. My idea of a perfect day!
I love your music choices... they are always cute and quirky! Also, there is a saying in my family that "She who dies with the most fabric, wins!" What contest we playing, we're still debating on because both my mom and I sew clothes, while my aunt sews quilts, so our usage of fabric and types of fabric differs greatly.
14:26 those boots! My witchy heart is in love
thanks for the lovely trip around LA while I pieced together the binding for my ALMOST FINISHED QUILT.
There is just everything about this video that is food for the soul to live vicariously by! I really look forward to seeing your absolutely dreamy fabric choices in future projects.
Did you hear yourself say you don't need any more fabric now? What??!
Oh my. The fabric. The paintings. I had no idea that Blue Boy and Pinky were in California! And I love the dark pink classical style gown in one of the portraits. Thank for taking us with you!
I'm sad we used to have such a lot of fabric shops in the UK and now they are very few 😔
Yes, I used to have 3 in my city and that wasn't counting the department stores which had fabric and haberdashery. Now we have none and the department stores are closed too. 😭
Yup I'm my city we only have abakhan and an curtain store left
I was drooling at those embroidered silks.... just as well I have no need for any! (And live several thousand miles away from the LA Fabric District).
Gorgeous gardens.
Do you ever go to Luxury fabrics in the fabric district? It's a couple doors down from Home fabrics, and while it has less selection, the prices are usually significantly better. Also, what are your plans for the green and pink stripe? We can wear our dresses out of that and match! 😉
That color combo did make me think of you 😊
That purple and green stripe at 2:35 is Life!
omg perfect timing !! my friend and I were planning on going to the LA fabric district this coming week
Hope you enjoy it!
Thank you so much for the wonderful tour. It was interesting from start to finish. I love the red stripped fabric you pointed out. Where I live up in Manitoba is in a 95% shut down. Worst place in North America. Your tour really made me feel like I was along with you. Thanks again 💜⚘💜
Omg the painting of the golden yellow silk dress was amazing! The way the artist captured the way the light hit the fabric folds and stitch lines was so realistic. Still/again in lockdown in Toronto and I just want to go fabric shopping! (I fully support lockdown covid measures, but not the way weak government has drawn out the process instead of being more aggressive earlier on.)
You are fantastic.
More dark linen forever. 😅
hard same!
Omg I have never clicked so fast on a Noelle blog video 😅🥰
16:55 I have that machine! One of the most highly recommended vintage machines, it's a good one. I'd love that cabinet for it.
I have fabric envy…I look at the stuff at joanns on sale and my wallet says no. One day though I will get some nice linen to sew with. I would probably pick wool over silk cause I am accident prone and silk just feels like it would not go over well.
Wool and linen are my dream fabrics I guess lol.
I forgot! Thank you for the galavanting though the gardens and gallery shots! Those paintings are beautiful and you could almost feel/hear the silk in some of those dresses in the portraits because of all of the detail that went into them.
Glad you enjoyed the Huntington Library. It’s one of my favorite places to wander, sketch and paint. And they have a fantastic gift shop.
Yes! Michael Levine’s!
Wow my youtube timing is on point today 😂 excited to see the goodiessssss
Yay! Thank you!
I used to be a member of Huntington Library when I used to live in LA- one of the best places ever. Thanks for bringing back all the amazing memories.💗💗💗
Thank you, I loved the garment area but the Huntington gardens were the highlight of you day.
Yay! Finally time to sit down and catch up on some of my fave RUclipsr videos. Oh that stripey silk. Oh. Sorry the restaurant was a flop. I have that Walt Disney Black Beauty record downstairs 😀🐴 I adore looking through antique malls. So much cool stuff. Thanks for letting me do it vicariously through you. Looks like it was a beautiful day. Take care.
So glad you had fun. Fabric is good for your soul!
All the pretty things, think my favourite dress painting was the gold regency, favourite garden is all and favourite fabric was ALL the beautiful fabrics.💖
That pink and green satin striped reminds me of ice cream *so much*
The gardens were beautiful but I have to admit you'd have had to drag me kicking and screaming away from the antiques; especially that 'Surrey with a fringe on top'! (Yeah, probably not right carriage type but it sprang to mind!). Thanks for sharing your adventures with us, Noelle, and for the funky music :D
Gill I thought exactly the same about that Surrey.....if that's right. Silk fringe and Gordon Macrae...
Glad you enjoyed it
Oooh that silk looks like watermelon candy 🍉 🍭 😍😍
Every time you pointed to a specific fabric, it was one I was already drooling over! Slate linen is most certainly NOT black linen. TOTALLY different.
Those were the vinyls of my childhood!! I love antique stores!
The paintings were so cool...all those beautiful clothes on canvas!!
You are soooo lucky! In the Midwest we have next to nothing for fabric warehouses!
That was so beautiful! Thank you!
I am sooo jealous!! all of those beautiful fabrics...sigh...one day, maybe, I'll get over there and go nuts in this fabric district,,,we don't have anything even remotely like that, all we have is 2 largish chain store haberdashery type places that have everything from thread to bed linen, it's a bit sad really... I love the stuff you ended up with, it kinda reminds me of my Nanna's "Regency" stripe wallpaper in her "best" room (front parlour)...
I got to go to three fabric shops this week! I was so happy I bought some random cream jersey, just cuz I could.
HAUL!
HAUL! HAUL! HAUL!
I adore the Huntington!!!!
Omg that rose garden!! 😍❤️
It was lovely to see you being so happy!!
I haven’t been to Huntington Library since I was a teenager. It’s till just as beautiful.
It is lovely to see you getting to go places. Thanks for the ride along. :)
Goodness what a lot of lovely things you shared!!! Fantabulous fabric fix....naughty Noelle..... laughed when you said I never need to buy fabric again....haha. You so will though. Antiques, collectables, fabrics, gardens and paintings of dresses....what a feast.
That pink and green stripe fabric was absolutely fabulous.
Painting at 22:45 He's gazing at her adoringly, probably mansplaining something and she's trying to read. LOL great painting!
hahahaha yes!
Wow I wish we had a district like this where I live!!!
Me too !😥
Oh wow. I live about a 15 minute drive from the Long Beach Antiques Mall. I'm trying to ignore that buggy.
I'm crying of envy. Why fabric stores does not look like that in 🇫🇮. And that assortment of everything will never happen over here. 😭
I loooooove your fabric store vlogs! I save each place to visit when we go to LA in August. 🎉🎊🎉🎊 Thank youuuu!
I love the Huntington. I went just before the lock down and loved it
Fabric, antiques, flowers, art...so good!!!
The Huntington gardens are awesome. I was there a few weeks ago.
Beautiful and relaxing views of the Huntington Gardens.💚🤗
Another fun Video!!! Ace is the place I would go to to get some supplies as well. And I am so excited you got the pink, light green silk!! Excited to see what you create when the fabric fits a project. 😁👍🏼
Oh my goodness, I remember Michael Levine’s, Fabric& Fabric and all the little stalls up and down the streets - I remember the places, but not the names - bead shops - trim stalls - rolls and rolls of luscious fabrics - thanks for a trip up and down memory lane, and seeing how it’s all so different now.
Yes- The Huntington! 😋. All those dresses!Try for The Getty next time or LACMA, too. - check out the exhibition schedules. If LACMA is closed, there’s always LaBrea Tar pits...🙄😝
Yes, one of my fave places to burn up my budget and my face - LA fabric district is definitely cosplay heaven. And wouldn’t The Huntingdon Gardens be THE place for a costume reveal?- And your seasonal timing was perfect 🤗
That was lovely. Enjoyed it tremendously. Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it!
That lovely silk swish!
Love it! And I'm completely with you on the black linen. My stash definitely has a variety of different black fabrics that I justify because they are *vaguely* different from each other.
That is fabric heaven. 😍😭I enjoy these videos so much.😘👍
Glad you like them!
I just took a picture of a bunch of fabrics I got in the past couple of weeks...all so pretty, but now the tub I've given myself to keep them in is full...and I'm looking for ways to make room for more (in addition to using them....lol). I'm glad you had a fun weekend and shared it with us.
Wahl!!! I miss the antique stores!!
Whenever I used to go antiquing, we would try and find the creepiest thing we could (it was never hard). What was the creepiest thing you saw?
What a lovely surprise!! Everything looks so amazing!!
I’m hoping once things open back up that my small localish fabric district has survived!! I know that my local fabric store has been run off their feet lots of people decided to sew over the pandemic.
Ahh fabric heaven! It would take me forever to choose! 😂 FOMO would hit hard! 🤣
Yes! Ive been waiting for this video, since i saw your stories. I live near LA but never gone to the fabric district, it felt so overwhelming not knowing what’s stores to go to.
Just go to all of them!! I do also have a video where i go into a LOT of them and show you what is where!
So many wonderful treats! Did you find yourself, after going to view the paintings, wishing that you had gone there before the fabric district because of new inspiration? Also, sorry that we missed the bonsai garden. Have you read Terry Pratchett’s Thief of Time? I adore Lu-Tze’s bonsai projects and found myself thinking of them when you mentioned bonsai.
Noelle buying more fabric...? *shocker* 😂😂😂
Looks like it was a fun trip & pretty fabric!!!
INCRÍVEL..,..ESPETACULAR...MARAVILHOSA
That orange "satin" gown was absolutely stunning. Part of me says 1830s, but I think that's wrong.
The store you bought your button calipers in, I'd have to be carried out kicking and screaming.
The pre waxed thread is sometimes called silamide and is great for buttons since it’s a pre cut length.
It seems really awesome but I want to know fiber content!
@@Costuming_Drama nylon mostly, in my college costume shop it was used for buttons, hems and closures, because they take the most stress.
Dude you're shopping vlogs are awesome because you really go for it!
Glad you like them!
looking at those children's records reminds me we own a copy of Boris Karloff read Rudyard Kipling's Just So Stories
I'm swooning so hard right now...
Algorithmic support
And gratitude for something that looks fun
And for your friendly video too.
I appreciated seeing the mini art show & the garden montage.
Awesome, thank you!
@@Costuming_Drama you are very welcome 🙂
Yeay! A fabric video! I`m so happy that things slowly is going back to somekind of normal! Can?t wait to see what you bought this time! Lots of love and stay safe out there! @drivebyanycraft
A shopping video...a sightseeing video! Lucky me! I live through my Noelle.
xoxo's Sandie
I've been to that Tim Burton themed restaurant and I agree with your assessment. The themed cocktails are also way expensive and ridiculously sweet to the point of being nauseating. Like 90% sugary syrups and a drop of middle shelf alcohol. My advice: go there to take a photo but don't stay for dinner. Just order a normal cocktail, not the themed drinks.
I need a fabric district in my life
I went to the crafting “thrift” store today and also bought more fabric and trim I do not need. 🤣
But when you do need it you have it and would they have it when you need it?💖
@@lesleyharris525 but if I can’t find it because I have so much… lol
@@yourbookladykatie but that's an organisation problem 😕
@@lesleyharris525 or a space problem, as in my case.
@@yourbookladykatie yep I know that problem 😅
Great fun! Thanks! My guess- the waxed thread is Silamide (sp?). Used for basting- very smooth and resists tangling. Not sure of the fiber, maybe nylon?
hey now!! you were right by me here in pasadena!!
Watching all those yards of silk coming off the rolls definitely made me feel less guilty about my own trip to the fabric store today. 🤣
Never be guilty!!
22:45 -and 23:23 lovely dresses
!
Both the Chinese and Japanese gardens at the Huntington were designed by experts from those countries. You need to come back when they fully open up. Occasionally they have a Jane Austin Tea there as well. Lemme know - I have a membership and can get you in FREE!
