Antique Shopping with Abby Cox and Experimenting with Trim for my Hogwarts Express Bustle Dress

- Hello Friends!
This week, I worked out yet another layer of trim on my Historical Hogwarts adventure after experimenting with trim a bit. I also went to the Sacramento Antique fair with @Abby Cox to do a bit of antique shopping. I managed to get myself a Singer 66 from 1915 and a whole sheep's worth of wool, both for only $15!
Anyway, I am making slow, but steady progress on my Hogwarts Express Bustle Dress and I am pretty excited about that!
I hope you enjoy!

Thank you for addressing the JKR issue and for vocally and clearly stating your views and support for trans people. I am NB trans and it means a lot for cis-people to be clearly stating these things.
💖💖💖
@@Costuming_Drama there's no point in saying anything to the herd, but this needs saying. She could have written about Fallon Fox if she wanted to attack a particular group.
I wanted to echo this. I'm Two Spirit (Indigenous and LGBT+) and that's the English language terminology I like to use for myself, but in case it's helpful: if I had to use colonial English terms I'd say I'm non binary, polyamorous, and pansexual. Anyway, I super appreciate how much effort you put into trying to learn, grow, and correct things where needed Noelle! With the JKR stuff as well as with the spirit animal stuff. I left a longer comment about the spirit animal thing too, but forgot to mention my appreciation for you talking about the JKR situation. Much appreciated! Sincerely
After you spoke about JK Rowling I looked this story up. It seems like she is trying to address a health issue about menstruation and the handling of blood. It seemed like she was trying to be inclusive but then was slammed. I did not hear her cut anyone down unless it was a subtle way that I missed. Was she questioning by asking these 3 words I have never heard in my life and have been unable to find definitions thus far. Life is a learning process of evolving so be gentle with one another.
@@brendaryan306 Read it again, it's TERF propaganda at its worst. It's hate speech, and it's dangerous.
About the "boring" sewing footage: I love to watch videos of people sewing while I myself am sewing, it is soothing and feels like I have company while doing something that takes so long. So, no, it's not boring, it's really pleasing and nice.
but you do you, if you don't feel like doing sewing shots, tha'ts totally fine too!
OMG. YOUR THUMBNAIL 😂😂😂😂😂 and the Singer baby is going to be the most beautiful workhorse of all time and I am so happy that you bought it!
Hey...I asked Noelle but she didn't know! Do you know what breed of sheep grew the fleece y'all bought? ( and do you know that UNR raises some majorly awesome merino? :D
My Nana taught me to sew on one just like it. It had belonged to HER nana before!
I've been having a terrible week and just wanted to sit and watch one of your videos because it's just comforting to have someone chatting about their everyday hobby stuff like a friend and then you went into your opinions on this whole trans issue and I just about cried. Being trans myself, I've struggled a lot with the whole JKR situation but I've come down to the same sort of decision that you have. The joy I found in those books is mine. She isn't the first creator whose opinions and actions have tried to ruin their work for me and I doubt she'll be the last.
Anyway, thank you for always being a friendly voice.
Man last weekend I was at a thrift store and I found the coolest riccar sewing machine from like 1950s 60s for 20 bucks. I'm restoring it.
I never heard of tithing, that's such a good idea.
I am so stealing this idea and sharing with my family! Such a great way of dealing with it.
As a mother of a trans "child" I appreciate that you are so supportive of people just being people. Thank you for that. I also only will buy used hp materials so she doesn't get any money from me lol
I’ve never heard of “tithing”used in this manner, but I think it’s amazing and wonderful!
The Trevor project is an excellent organization. Let’s donate today.
Or Mermaids!

Salesman: "May you live for a thousand years." 😁😄
At the antiques fair I'm sure there was a giant taco cake stand. Which is content I'm here for! But a lot of items need to go to a hell dimension *looking at you Fred Flintstone doll*
Hahahahaha I went back to film that guy cuz I saw it out of the corner of my eye and was like “what is that monstrosity?!?”
When she said an antique faire, i did not expect Fred to be that had to be a joke about the doll, how antique is the Flintstones lol
I like the way you do your volgs, you talk to me while making dinner. its like having a mate over telling about their day.
I’m so glad that you like them!
Yes!
me too ; )
Thank you for showing some of the treasures of the Antique fair. The solution you came up with, regarding HP and JK, is genius! I agree that once a work is published, it ceases to be in the author's control, and starts to live its own life in the hands of its fans. Reading the books, I always thought the world of HP was an embarrassing testament to JK's very limited worldview, so it's been inspiring to see the fans enrich that world to better reflect the actual world we live in.
I love your new old Singer! Have you researched with the Serial Number to see when and where it was made?
I'd also like a pattern tour as well, please 😊
LOL just did a quick tour and I am apparently the only person that thought: "Wait! Slow down! show the curls on that FLEECE! ". (ETA: ok, maybe not the only one ...)
Also, re: the sewing. Its not that we don't believe you are doing the sewing. At least for me its partly that we love seeing it come together (its like seeing the sheetrock go up in a house build), and partly that it is soothing for us beginners to see that its not just US the st00pid things happen to. We can finally breathe for a little while here in the Willamette, as we have had a good day of rain, and Air Quality went from like 561 down to 36-ish. It smells SO GOOD! Keep taking care of yourself :-)
I'm glad your aproach on JK issue, I find It better caring others than hate someone is just mistaken. Been helpfull is better than hatefull make no excuses to be Mean.
Thank you Noelle!
💖💖
Beauty of a singer 66 red eye hopefully all is in good order, you can track the age by looking up the serial number on the plate near the back, I have a singer 15 from 1910 that I'm slowly working on to get it up and going again.
Had to stop the vid at 17:11 because of your declaration of self-imposed tithing to support a cause....because I’m _taken aback_ by the clear-headed, rational, and, (oooo I hope you take this the right way!), beautiful -deviousness- of this concept!! Damn, you impress me!!
I have no idea if I’ll always agree with your point of view, but I know I’ll always think that your point of view is based on a very rational and analytical process coupled with a deep and abiding kindness. Like I said, I’m damn impressed. And considering the state our country is in, to have found a Vlogger like you does give me a little bit of hope where I generally have none.
And here I thought it was all going to be about your dress! (P.S. That pleating board didn’t seem so horrible. What don’t you like about it?)
(P.P.S. Atmos was the name of an invention a deluded genius created that he sold as a ‘green’ way of running your now ‘smart car’ automobile, but _actually_ it was a means of delivering a lethal toxin into the atmosphere in order to kill off the humans and leave the planet habitable for a militant race called the Sontarans, and this genius and his hand-picked prodigies. Soooo, if your husband’s stereo starts pumping out green gas one day, I suggest you throw it into some lawn and leaf bags and bury it in the yard. 😁 (Dr. Who; The Sontaran Strategem.)
I love watching your vlogs! There's no need to explain how you can separate something that is meaningful to you from the hateful speech of its creator. Any emotionally mature adult should be able to do that. Thanks for being a light of positivity.
Rachel Maksy must use some of that music, cause that’s all I was able to think about when it played 😂
The reason "we" love seeing the sewing part...
Even though you may feel frustrated showing your process, it is incredibly valuable to those of us that are visual learners. Learning includes absorbing mistakes! Feedback. The oopsies are just as valuable as seeing a perfect product.
I would even go as far as to argue that the mistakes can be MORE valuable honestly. That said, I also totally understand why Noelle has chosen not to show the process of her hand sewing and support the decision to leave it out of the vlogs.
Yes, I absolutely love it when people point out where they made a mistake and leave it in a video because learning how it is fixed without having to scrap somethings is invaluable. Like Morgan Donner was showing how to cut triangular panels with one edge on the straight grain and one on the bias and then showing how they had to be flipped and seven so that you don't get 2 bias edges together, then she messed up and didn't flip one so she pointed it out when editing the video and added an explanation of why she didn't rip the seam and re sew I think it had to do with having it sewn to a lining that wouldn't allow it to stretch, but it also mentioned that it could be hung and allowed to stretch and then trimmed or just don't make that mistake like she did. And countless videos where someone as shown a shot of, "this is why the directions said don't sew these pieces together first, and I should have listened" or whatever because most of us looking to RUclips for help are not going to be mistake proof, but we may not have the skills and experience to fix our mistakes, so to me seeing the "pros" or just the much more experienced make mistakes and work them out is great!
@@MommyOfZoeAndLiam Learning to problem solve is a great life skill to have. Watching others work things out on the fly is very helpful. It gives people the courage to cut into that lovely material or try making a mockup of a new pattern. I hope that in the coming months we all take a good look at the things that make us hesitate and remember that we can't move forward without trying new things. Blessings on you and your family and friends and any livestock you might have wandering around the house and yard & STAY healthy too!
Am so happy to see “Costuming in Color”. This is exactly what is needed. Thank you and Gigi for adding yet one more thing on your plate. This is an important addition to our costuming community and for the SCA.
A Singer Red Eye! Nice! I *may* have one of those, too...and a couple others....I did sew a canvas tent on a Singer 66.
I bought a 1952 Singer 201 yesterday! Mine needs some work too, but it should be in top shape soon. I'm so excited to start sewing with it!
Thank you for talking about HP and JK, I've been invited to the studio tour end of December and was struggling with how to handle that. Now I have food for thought and an sort of action plan brewing..Thank you from the UK south coast :)
The studio tour is EPIC. Give yourself a LOT of time and I do recommend the audio tour.
@@Costuming_Drama I've been there once before, but that was before they added the Gringot set,
so I was so so looking forward to it....and I have a Ravenclaw robe I was also panning on wearing as well lol But yes, I'll go (with my Slytherin friend and her Hufflepuff boyfriend) and love every second, but will do what you said about donating twice what I spent on HP march and tickets (when i have the money).
I love love love my singer 66! Great machine, goes through everything, never has issues really
I personally try to seperate creator and creation. Otherwise we would have to censure what art, litteraturen and cinema we allow ourselves to experience to such a degree that it would impowerish our minds. I think it's really important thou to call out artists on problematic and inhumane ideas and also to recognise and discuss problematic aspects of the works we love.
I agree, I think it is up to each person themselves to decide how they feel about it. However, I do think it is important to keep in mind that you might still be financially contributing to a creator even if you only approve of the creation. But that is also up to any individual to decide, just something to be conscious of
My personal stance, I don't want to support JK, so I wont buy any Harry Potter produce, but I love the franchise, so ill be here, supporting small businesses and makers, and consuming my already bought merch and such. This is just my stance, I don't intend to offend anyone.
I’ll get official stuff second hand because she gets no profit from my purchases and we have all the stuff out there from the 2 decades or so that we can enjoy!
Couldn’t have said that better. We can enjoy the art without approving of the authors views.
@@robintheparttimesewer6798 Yes! well said!
I just enjoy watching people sew
Yay to allll the organizing and collection videos!
Yes please for pattern organisation!
Yes please on pattern organization ❤️
I love your vlogs. They make me feel like I’m working in my sewing room with a friend.
I love the idea of tithing. I’m going to incorporate that with what I’ve been doing. I’ve been only buying second hand or hand made HP things. I want the items, but I don’t want her getting money and she doesn’t get residuals off thrifted or handmade (unless they have a contract with her which isn’t likely). For everything else, tithing feels like the right option. Thanks!
Noelle for company while working at home - it's a good Friday
Harry Potter and Little Women are some of my favourite books, and I'm 40! We all need a bit of escapism. I'm going to look on audible for The Dresden Files, I'm intrigued.
I LOVE your bookend! Genius! I’ve never been part of a church, so the word tithing never meant anything to me. But I just learned recently that it means 10%. So, I think you’re actually kinda mega-tithing! 🥰
Seeing all these comments about seperation of creation/creator makes me so happy! It's not the easiest thing in the world, but it makes things so much more enjoyable!!! It's also cool to see that others think along the same lines as yourself.
Yes to all the pattern organization!!!
So glad to see you out & about again...thanks for taking us along! :)
I'm super envious of your antiquing trip! All that vintage glassware! I'm drooling.
This was a really great video. Thank you for making the statement that you did.
Pattern organization yassss 😍
Yess pattern collection!
What a beautiful singer, I'm so jealous!
I subscribed right now because of your honesty and sincerity on jkr issue - you are amazing. Don’t let her take away your happiness and what is good. You are good and that comes through so clearly. Your reasoning comes from a caring and compassionate place. 👍🏼
Great start to my day,
Yes to the pattern organization vid 👍
Love your trim! Ador your stance on HP. Those books are so special to many. I totally agree. They belong to us. ❤
That beautiful 1915 sewing machine 😍😍😍😍
Aaah I’m so happy for you! I also got myself a Red eye Singer 66 from 1922 but it doesn’t have any wiring for a presser foot. It can be used with a hand crank or a treadle. Lots of love ❤️
Ooooh I hav enever seen a pleater board before... I'm in love. Love the sewing machine! Wow!
Oh that red eye is gorgeous! It's a great machine to work on, and you can always convert it back later on. I'm learning it's not as easy working a treadle. It's like moving from an automatic car to a standard! Definitely takes more work and effort. I do like the capabilities with the attachments, and they're not that expensive or rare! Makes Edwardian sewing far more exciting! Thank you for your videos, I feel like I have a buddy I can talk to while I'm doing my own historical sewing. I think we all need that now with covid.
I've been finding hand-sewing is great to do while on Zoom calls, so your hands are out of view, and the managers on the call have no idea what you are doing with your hands while looking attentive!
Going on "outings" takes a lot of mental energy out of me at the moment, particularly around chinstrap style mask wearers... (I've got fabric masks, but they are mostly 4-layer, so better than some).
I've been knitting this way as well :P
I got a lot of quilting done early in the pandemic via work meetings!
Thanks for keeping me company at work again! I am working on an 1860s corset right now and am soooo close to getting the mockup fit just right. I'm really excited to make undergarments for some reason!
I enjoyed this vlog very much!
I’m so happy for you that you could meet and show us the fair! All those spinning wheel made me miss California... take care of you and enjoy the fleece ❤️
Definitely agree with you on the HP vs JK issue, and will try to do the same with the tithing when I get the money. Also, finally done with exams and in less than 4 weeks I'll be in year twelve, that's a weird thought. I'm still listening to Wizard of Earthsea and reading Catch-22 when I have the time.
Yay done with exams!!
Also. I am seriously jealous of the market y’all went to. So many fun finds!
OOH PATTERNS!!!! Love your approach with the Harry Potter too!
Thanks for the company and this loving community.
I love harry potter and will never stop loving it. Her opinions are her own not mine. So like you im not going to give up my favorite books because of her opinons.
Oooo Loved the Antique Fair! My husband and I just moved to the area Raleigh in North Carolina and they have one here that we are FINALLY going to go check out this weekend and I am very excited to see what kind of goodies they have there. Loving the dress so far, I'm excited to see the final outcome!
I was lucky enough to find a White Family Rotary Sewing Machine from an elderly lady that is 115 years old. So I feel your excitement. I need to restore it though.
Yeah, I live near the North Complex Fire (about 7 miles away). SO I totally understand
The interview on costumes in color was great. Also saw a couple of really good interviews yesterday on colonial Williamsburg’s channel with people of color. Their history is just so spot on. Thank you for sharing with us.
Bespoke shoes are so exciting! I've had the privilege of having two custom shoes made for me. I have lymphedema in my legs so my legs and feet are always swollen and shoes can be am issue. I've had a pair of Wesco boots made and a beautiful pair of dual sport motorcycle boots made. I loved the process and the result and I hope you htas much fun as I did!
Ooh! Just yellow is so pretty
The antique fair looks like fun to browse and easy to carry away with a lot. That sewing machine is a fantastic find. Looks like art.
Great to see the project progress.
Okay I need to go read those books. Thank you for the recommendation.
Yes would love a pattern organization/ collection video :D
I would LOVE to see a pattern tour! I'm always here for suggestions (especially bustle), pattern reviews and reorg videos. ❤️
Thanks for sharing your thoughts about tithing - that's smart and helps me a lot. (I saw it on IG but I don't think I commented). One thing I notice is that the amount that any merch costs is something I consider more now. It's made me a more critical consumer, so thanks for that! Lindsay Ellis did a video where she talked about death of the author and JK's deal, and the money element (her profit) was a big part of my takeaway from that. I thought it was a good watch if anyone is interested -- again, your system is a good solution to the issue Lindsay raised.
Love how the overskirt is turning out -- it looks amazing!
Vicki is awesome! I was already subscribed to her before you mentioned her. I find what she does very fascinating.
Also that overskiirt looks amazing!
I am still working on the curtains for our pop - up camper.
I was just looking for things to watch as I needed a break from writing, and then I saw your video. Perfect! Now I have been hand sewing buttonholes for nearly an hour. Still some left.
I really like when you just talk and I have no need to see you hand sewing it. You always show or tell what you are doing at some point and that is good for me. Besides, it feel even more like chatting and sewing together when the camera is at your face.
I was talking to a friend over the phone for four hours yesterday (those chats are the best!) and I didn't though of sewing while chatting with her. She, however, did a lot of dishes and house hold chores while we chatted.
Big YES to pattern collection vid! Also I love the design of your new shoes! Hope your new old sewing machine friend and you will have an awesome time together! Those stereopsis (?) images you showed at the antique fair were super cute too and of course your gown continues to get even more gorgeous with every step you make!
I love your vlogs, because I always feel so motivated to get stuff done myself while watching them. It's like having a chat with a friend! :D Also, I feel you on the hand stitching; I'm not great at it, but stubbornly working on getting better. :)
Another amazing video. Completely love your new sewing machine! She is beautiful!! It reminded me of my grandmama's old sewing machine. The one I learned sewing on. But, hers was paddle run. Since I was very little, I remember "helping" her sew. While she was sewing or what not up top, when she wanted to actually sew she would tell me to go. I was on my knees under the sewing machine table working that big old paddle up and down. She would tell me to go faster or slower. I am sure I slowed her down so much but, she let me "help" her.
I think what some people want you to film is your House Elf sewing. 🤣😂🤣😂
I can't believe people think you're not sewing your work...I don't understand. 🤷♂️
Anyway, again, another wonderful video. 👍🏼😀
Thank you for the smooth camera work at the antique fair, i stopped what I was doing and was glued to the screen, I miss casual shopping. I would love to see the patterns!
I screamed when you showed the spinning wheels!!! I'm dying to have a new one! Mine broke and I had to turn it into a great wheel. Ugh! Theyre so awesome!
Thank you for the wonderful explanation on why I can at 70 still loving these books
You had me at James Marsters! I will need to look into The Dresden Files. Thanks for your ramblings. 😊
I am so hyped about the Ladies Who Genre Dresden review! And the new books!
Glad I woke up to a new Noelle video! Great way to start a Friday.
I feel you on the smoke problem, I'm up in the Seattle area and the air quality issue has been a battle. Wishing for rain and clear skies for the whole west coast.
Excellent timing! I just sat down with a coffee! Bonus Noelle chat! 😍
Perfect!
Its after work now.
Your hubby’s gift sounds awesome!!!
Choosing your shoe leather sounds cool.
Your pond sounds great.
The fire trucks sound scary.
The silent pump sounds lovely!!!
Like getting new underwear for Christmas. Taking joy in that is when I knew I was an adult.
I loved Spike!!! He was my favorite Buffy character!!!
This series sounds awesome!!!
The double row of trim looks perfect.
I don’t like the pleats on the over skirt.
Have a great week!!!
See you next time!!!
I am also in the process of getting my koi pond re-done, it leaked so it had to get overhauled. Your dress is going along so nicely and it's giving me all sorts of lovely ideas for my first bustle dress to completed hopefully this winter.
yeah sewing montage! the music selection was perfect. and yes to organizing patterns...
Put 100% love into all you do. Give love and don't let hate win. Keep on that creative train and keep putting love into all you do and spread love with all you do. That defeats the hate put out there. Keep being a light for love.
Yes, patterns!
oohhh, I would love to see pattern video! themed organizations are quite satisfying
Well now I know what I'm going to start listening to once I'm UTD on CR. I love James Marsters and had no idea he'd read any book series. That sewing machine was a steal!! Can't wait to see it in action. Also, I agree that the pleating on the overskirt just isnt it. Maybe on the underskirt? Hard choice.

Can't say how grateful I am for you today. Clicked on your video shortly after finding out about RBG. Your cheerfulness and frankness were exactly what I needed. Thank you
Also small thought on the patterns. My thought is bin them by type, skirt, gown etc. and then their order in the bin chronological. I know that would work best for my brain. Have a wonderful week!
For about 20+ years my favorite book was The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, and then I read The Slow Regard of Silent Things by Patrick Rothfuss and it just calmed my soul.
Yes! Buffy nerd here as well
I really enjoy the sped up sewing bits, something about it is extremely satisfying to watch. As for the hand sewing, if you don’t want to video it that’s fine, you do you x
JK = urgh. Totally agree with your viewpoint on this
YES to the pattern org video, mine are a mess & I need some tips!
The Singer is gorgeous, I have a Singer 99 & it’s a pleasure to use.
I’m in agreement about the pleating but I’m not sure why. I thought it was fine on the table but not on the drees form..
Thank you for another great video, it made my morning 😊xx
Just sitting here listening to you while working on my vintage (victorian lace) crochet pattern. Just ran into the 2nd mistake in the pattern and am now ripping out several hours of work so I can fix it. Thnx for just talking to me digitally while i struggle through it!
I really like your tithe idea. I've been struggling with how to handle Wizards Unite because I love the sense of immersion in the world I grew up in and it gets me out walking every day which has really helped me stay sane during the current chaos. At the same time, something that almost certainly supports a person who seems bent on actively making things worse for specific groups of people makes me oogy. Tithing seems like a great solution and I really appreciate your bringing it up!
I just started watching your videos, and I love them... and you like the Dresden files too!!!
That meme comes to mind of McGonagall protecting Trelawney from Umbridge. Like, how dare she. This is our home. JK can see herself out, thank you very much.
You’re psychic. I just planned my first antiquing trip with my mother today for my birthday. This is amazing.
Hello there, as an absolute beginner I really liked this video! I'm cutting out the fabric pieces for my very first simple skirt and I just don't know how Bernadette makes things look so easy 😅 I mean she made me believe I could be able to sew some nice things, but it's good to hear I'm not the only one having to struggle a bit in the beginning.
You can make anything look easy with good editing skills! 😉
Bernadette Banner shows her first petticoat, sewn at 16 years of age, before the start of her ballgown petticoat video. Still functional but yikes if you compare the two..... Every journey begins with a single step. Enjoy your creativity and keep sewing. 🌺🌺
@@dcinrb8538 Thank you, I will! I know it'll take a lot of practice to become as skillful as Noelle or Bernadette.
It’s looks so cool already! Can’t wait for more...
I’m still working on Lucille Sharpe, need to get into the velvet 😅 but I’m procrastinating a lot haha.
Im so jelly about that machine!! Good find. I really want to go to that fair next year, I completely forgot the date otherwise I would have gone.
