  • Hello Friends!
This week I have decided to try out the new Costume Industry Coalition Plus-Size Hamilton Spencer Pattern by making a mock-up to see how it fits and to see if the directions would be easy to follow for a new sewist. The fit was actually pretty great, so that is wonderful! I did some sleeve battle and ended up showing you the process of how I overcame my sleeve woes but using my dress form to establish where to place them.
I hope that you enjoy watching me work through this!

When I was in 5th grade, we had a series of assignments where we had to write out clear instructions for something, seemingly, simple. How to make a PB&J. How to Brush Your Teeth. And every day my teacher would select a random handful and follow the steps on the paper word for word. I remember that assignment every-single-time I have to create a process for work.

I’m jealous. Australia has no vaccine yet. Not a single Australian has received any doses. Not one.
Thanks ScoMoFo! Because he tried to hedge his bets, we’re now right at the very bottom of the list for every vaccine. So we won’t be receiving anything until everyone else (as in every other country) already has theirs. It’s so frustrating.
Especially as we’ve generally handled outbreaks better than most other countries- but that’s due to state premiers, and has nothing to do with the Prime Minister. In fact, every time a state premier shuts down the border, or orders a lockdown or a mask mandate, the PM just snipes at them and tried to score political points. He’s completely useless.
But it’s not surprising. This is the man who decided to have a family vacation in Hawaii in the middle of the bushfire crises, when half of the country was literally on fire. And then, in December, during a global pandemic, he trotted himself over to the US in order to receive a medal from Trump. And he looked so smug about it too. Ugh.

Compare him to Jacinda, who was on top of everything from the very beginning, and has secured vaccines not only for every Kiwi, but also for every other country in the region (except for us, because we’re much bigger than they are). And she’ll be giving those vaccines to the Pacific Island nations for free.
I’m so jealous of New Zealand’s leadership. I cannot express how jealous I am.

    a) so glad I watched this before thinking of tackling my own Hamilton Spencer pattern. So I'm making the Hamilton Spencer, and I just finished the rouleaux work on the front. It took forever, but I enjoy handwork, so it's okay. FYI- I made the trim with 1/4 in. cord like they recommended, but after I stitched one leaf, I thought it looked lumpy. I switched to 2 mm., and I thought it looked much better. I also really appreciated Sewstine saying she needed more yardage. I'm using a 4 yd piece of silk from my stash- and I used pretty much all of it. I'm having fun- hope you do to.

    • @az_twist6267
      @az_twist6267 3 года назад +1

@@AmyCeleste I'm using a gold flatlined silk, and it took me about 1 1/2 hrs per leaf. (Not counting the time I wasted making the 1/4 inch trim.) Bridgerton didn't quite get me through it all, but close. Maybe I'd have been faster if I'd watched something else. : ) I think a good series or audio book is key though for long handsewing projects!

Oh wow, I just bought my pattern and supplies and I'm feeling concerned now! I bought a wool broadcloth from Burnley and Trowbridge that is a pretty good weight, and I feel like that will be way too bulky for the trim. Maybe I'll do the trim in a matching silk taffeta? I also only bought 3 yards of the wool, per the pattern.....

    • @az_twist6267
      @az_twist6267 3 года назад

@@emilypagenkopf5363 I used almost every bit of 4 yards- I watched Sewstines video, and she said she used close to 4 yds too. I thought I was pretty efficient in my layout, but I didn't use the one in the pattern. Bernadette Banner made hers in wool, but I'm not sure what the weight was.

I've been doing job interviews (if I pass the pre-employment checks I start next week! Yeah! - been a year since COVID took my job - no need for tour bus drivers in my country at the moment) and working on my bachelors degree, coping with an ill husband (he's well on the road to recovery now) and doing some crafting. Yesterday, for the first time in months, I had my sewing machine out to shorten sleeves on a T-Shirt (I dislike 3/4 length sleeves so now they're above the elbow) and today I'm deconstructing a pair of shorts so that I can use them as part of an 18th Century set of pockets in florescent lime green (the outer layer is an embroidered lime green fake silkish fabric but I want something sturdy as that fabric is quite fragile seeming).

Because I hate that stupid shape and it's never like wide enough or tall enough to fit a reasonable piece of fabric to iron it. I understand why it has that shape it's meant for ironing finish clothing not whole pieces of fabric.

I am excited about the Merida project! 😃 I am South African (live in Cape Town🙋🏼‍♀️), Costube has sparked my interest in historical dress & sustainable fashion! I am still VERY much a newbie to sewing. I am starting with learning the basics of hand-sewing, I've hemmed a few pairs of trousers for my short self. My first sewing project in 2021 is to line a shop-bought dress (it has spaghetti staps) that is made of a viscose large pattern fabric (looks random brush strokes on white canvas) which tends to 'shine through' if direct light hits from behind. I don't wear the dress but I really like it and I want to wear it without having to put a slip on underneath. So, I am attempting to make it wearable with a lining. I hope you have a good week! 🍀

Hi, Noelle! Thank you for mentioning and explaining all that "missed out" details for beginners! I consider it extremely important and helpful, and, though not a complete beginner myself, i know i would struggle with issues you pointed out! As to my current work-it is a "more proper than before" viking kit which includes linen underdress and woolen overdress. While waiting for nice wool to come in, i´ve dyed my treasured irish linen with alkanna and crap roots and completely ruined it! Because it is a no go to put your beautifull fabric in a synthetic net previously dyed with blue...Well, my fabric now does have gorgeous rosa tones somewhere and footprints of blue mesh!!! Then i bought locally sold (Germany) linen and it is nowhere nar irish in terms of quality and soooo itchy...So, quest for a good underdress continues and "the truth is out there")

I had a couple of solutiion thoughts that might be interesting...I wonder if you could put slide bolts under the sewing table tops? Not as secure as fully bolting together, but they wouldn't separate accidentally but would still be easy to separate on purpose. On putting the pattern together in 2 or more pieces, was there any places that you could reprint one of the rows and split there? Not ideal paper/ink wise but may save some sanity.

The best advice "I am going to do the responsible thing and stop working on this now......" You are so RIGHT!!!
This is a difficult lesson to learn. Until you have a few situations where you come back the next day and five minutes later it all falls into place....Start every project by making cookie dough. When you need to step away, go make cookies. In the pursuit of happiness!!

I really appreciate all your advice done beginners! While I’m not a beginning sewish (my current project is custom Roman shades for our kitchen followed by curtains for the living room and bedroom), I’m very new to sewing clothing (I’ve made exactly 3 - including my purple petticoat for my wedding dress - 9yrs ago).
I will be purchasing this pattern to make “someday” and even if someday never comes I’ll at least know my money went to a great cause.

I didn't tape the whole pattern together (space issue) but laid them out a row at a time, cut the pieces out on each row without mixing anything up, and then taped each pattern piece together. No issues with matching things up, in that way. The star markings and numbers enabled this very well: you can easily match everything up that way. Looking forward to watching the rest of your video, I feel like there's so much to educate myself on at the same time, while making this pattern. Bit overwhelming but will have learnt a lot.

I love this video! I was enthused about the fundraiser & was just taking it as read that I would make the Spencer and then decide if I liked how it looks on me. Regency is not one of my favorite time periods. Boobs on a tube isn’t a look I’m comfortable with so this is outside my comfort zone entirely. But I’m excited to learn the tailoring techniques that I’ve heard of but haven’t had a chance to use yet! And conveniently another costuber put out a video today with types of fabric, thread & and tools (and where to find them) so I can order pieces I need for this project since one of my groups is doing a sew along with this pattern.
Your videos are always full of good tidbits and advice. And I love that you don’t hide the snags you hit while sewing. We all do it but... it’s nice to se that we are not alone in our struggles!

Thank you for providing some much needed encouragement for this project. I am currently trying to make the Hamilton Spencer as a surprise birthday present for a friend - currently basting the double cording around the entire pattern. The pattern was a bit of a stretch for me but you inspired me to first make a 'wearable mock-up' for myself to see how the pieces fitted and anything that might be a construction issue and channeling "just do the thing" after stalling in cutting out the never-ending bias strips! So thank you and take care.

I am so very happy to have a blog to sew to!!!! I have missed you! :)
I have only read the instructions on the spencer as I have a great deal of sewing to do before I attempt it, but it seamed to me that the notches were to align the sleeve to the sleeve cap. I would honestly bow to your experience (both as a sewer and with the pattern specifically) but perhaps that can stave off further headaches making the garment proper. Or you saw something I didn't see and I am just being dumb.
I am so relieved to see it looking so well on a plus size body. I was really worried about that. Now to finish this comfy nightdress so I can make skirts!! I have three skirts planned and the final is a garment I have been wanting for over 2 decades. An ankle length circle skirt will be mine!

I didn't realise how much I had missed your sewing montages with quirky music. It makes me so happy to hear some unexpected music in a faster tempo than most people chooses for sewing videos. It is really motivating to sew along when I hear that. :)
During this video I have basted and started to hand sew a waistband that I made far more complicated that usual, due to not having enough fabric to do it the easy way. The waistband is to a simple-ish skirt that I sew in breaks between working on my Big Project, the Winter Coat. I am nearly done with the lining (opted for doing the lining before the fashion fabric) and next step is setting in the sleeves.
I am also learning how to knit multi-colored patterns while knitting a beret to one of my friend. I always do more than one project at a time. Usually like this; one hand sewing project, one project in the stage of mashine sewing or cutting out and one knitting project, at the same time.

I'm also drooling over the Spencer pattern. I've not printed out the pattern yet, just the instructions, and I have to say they read like someone took an order of operations for a professional stitcher and tried to expand it for less experienced sewers. I didn't have much trouble reading through it (I learned how to write orders of operations when I took pattern drafting in college), but I could see how someone used to home sewing patterns could get a bit confused, especially if they tend to skim the writing and mostly use the pictures, the way I tend to with home sewing patterns (when I don't just ignore the instructions all together). Thanks for the heads up on the notches for the sleeves!

Man I'm sure glad you made this video and showed all the issues you ran into! The videos on this pattern I've seen so far made it seem advanced, yes, but fairly straightforward to follow and mentioned detailed instructions. I thought this was something I could attempt but now I'm glad I was warned by your video. If it caused issues for you with your experience I'm sure it would have turned me off attempting any sewing whatsoever for a long, long while. So thank you very much for not shying away from showing 'negatives' and issues. It is so very appreciated and goes a long way in making me feel like sewing in general is something I can do. Sometimes when all I see are the polished videos it can seem like only I am struggling, which can be very discouraging.

I think a secret to this pattern may be to know when to say, ‘Okay, I’m taking over now...’ Then you need to pick and choose what you like from it. After all, you’re the one who will be wearing it. Maybe this could be called a ‘growing’ piece?!.

I would say that's the key to any sewing pattern, when to keep to the pattern and when to say, "I think the arm should be this way." It is entirely possible the sleeve notches got switched front to back at some point in the process.

Hi, Noelle! I found it easier, for me anyway, when putting printed patterns together I do it one pattern piece at a time. Instead of taping the entire print out all at once. It helps minimize the misalignment. So if one piece is off, it doesn't translate to another piece.

Your reaction made me feel not so alone, lol. Also, I've started cutting out the pattern pieces as they are completed during the taping process instead of taping them all together and then cutting. It's much less unwieldy, and helps to eliminate that crappy issue of things getting wonky because of slight misalignment. It's been a sanity saver for me!
