  • Hello Friends!
Today I have the first in my Merida Bustle Dress series where I get the Bustle Dress Overskirt done! I am super excited to be working on this Merida historical cosplay and can't wait to see the whole outfit come together! I love Disney and Pixar and Merida is probably my favorite princess, so I decided to bring her forward and try and imagine what she would have worn in my very favorite period with a Victorian Bustle Dress.
This historical Disney Cosplay is Merida and I will be doing it in conjunction with a bunch of my friends, who all wanted to do some cool Disney costumes together and see how they would turn out. We all decided to update our princess or villain of choice to our favorite eras, for the most part. If you have a historical Disney Costume, I would absolutely love to see it and post about it, so feel free to send it on over to me!
If you'd like to see more Historical Disney Princesses and Villains, you can check out my pals channels and they will be updating soon with theirs as well!

LMAO. Watching while washing dishes. My four year old son says, "what's Bernadette doing?". To which I replied, "that's not Bernadette." Then he stopped, looked, and said said, "oh, what's Noelle doing?"

Hi, having lived in Perth, Scotland for a large number of years, home of the Blackwatch Regiment. I have seen many kilts and my husband has a collection of them. Most of the fringes are at most about 1 inch long. 1cm to an inch seem best. Good luck. Xxx

Not only am I making my own historical Disney princess outfit, I'm GENDER SWAPPING it. I am so excited but getting a hold of a frock coat pattern took some doing. Everyone stateside seemed to be sold out so I had to order from Reconstructing History directly.

Please, please, please choose a beautiful green skirt - always makes the Black watch really pop! Also, would not recommend fringe edge because, while it may look nice, it will likely be a static nightmare - my clan’s tartan sash really picks up the static, especially in the fall. That said I wish you liked dancing more. The dress would be a real hit at one of the RSCDS balls!

When you talked about the abundance of straight lines when working when tartan, I felt that deeply in my soul. I recently made a circle skirt out of tartan wool and it was absolutely the most beginner friendly material I had worked with so far. We have just left the winter storm behind us here in the Netherlands (I used the opportunity to finally make my bum roll) and am about to start on an 18th century petticoat, just as soon as my fabric arrives.

I think I paid 75.00 for my much smaller! And I totally agree, I watch the press briefs everyday, my husband thinks I have lost my mind. I never ever watched the circus and cruel people that was the last administration. Yet, I cant wait to see what our new administration is doing and see the humanity they are bringing. And yes, Jen even laughs at herself sometimes...how refreshing! Have a great week Noelle.

As to life... still swimming. Lately working on test knitting. Today I binge watched season2 of A Discovery of Witches and knit several inched on the body of a sweater (tiny yarn=slow!).
Kids got a 4 day weekend, today was a stat and tomorrow is a pro-d, yay! 🙄 LOL
We got a little bit of snow this weekend, maybe a couple inches, nowhere near what was forecast but enough for the kids to have some fun. Snow angels in the grassy snow somehow caused a hole (seam let go) in my daughter's snowpants. Yay for being able to hand sew, there's no way I would have got that part into my machine.
Lately I've been dream/planning medieval hoods. I've done one mockup and then played around with new patterns again.
    Hope you are well!

I fully understand wanting the room to be comfortable. We just added storage cabinets on the wall in my office (slash new sewing room since I bought my sewing machine and needed a place to use it) which allowed me to reorganize some things and clear some floor space. It now feels less claustrophobic in there, and I now enjoy using my office and work from there more than the couch. It’s a process, though, for sure. I believe in you! :-)

I do a lot of work with thread, yarn, rope...strings of all shapes and sizes. I totally understand how sore your fingers can get. Just a suggestion for you if you’ll be dealing with that same thread a lot, you might try moleskin, or kinesiology tape. It stays stuck without as much sticky residue left behind, and flexes with your fingers. I use moleskin for my heavier macrame projects, and kinesiology tape for tatting. Also, 90%+ rubbing alcohol takes sticky tape residue off fingers fairly quickly. I try not to offer unsolicited advice very often, but I also know what a pain surgical tape can be.
I seriously can’t wait to see the bodice for this dress. Blackwatch tartan is one of my all time favorites!!! I can neither confirm or deny drooling over the overskirt. It’s so PRETTY!!! 🤩🤩 The bodice you chose is gorgeous...short OR long tails. I hope your coming week is full of love, light, and more cookies!

Fringe thoughts: kilts often have a double row of fringe that are an inch or less, so you won't get the clumping; fly plaids on the other hand have long fringe but it's often purled. The latter would probably look great, but would be a wicked lot of work.

That wool is so yummy!! Tacking those front pleats will definitely help. I think the weight of the wool is pulling them down. I am reading Susanna Kearsley and quilting. Geb is quilting month for me March will be back to clothes!

Well, it's only almost two weeks since Foundations Revealed's competition deadline. We 👑 are of course still finishing all of the interior stitching, very stealthily AFK.

I love that way it turned out, I’ve now got this TV pattern on my purchase list :). Thank you so much for all the tips on pleating, soooo helpful! Can’t wait to see how the bodice pattern works! Also thanks for the podcast/book ideas :)

Hello! I’m not exactly new, as I’ve spent a bunch of pandemic catching up on the majority of your videos, but this is my first comment. I’ve been sewing off and on for years (Mom taught plus 4H club), but been doing a bit more as I discovered pdf patterns and a couple of my friends wanted to learn. And then the plague hit, and I’ve sewn a LOT of masks or friends and family. Discovered Bernadette while searching for mask-making videos and now I’m subscribed to most of CosTube. I mostly sew garments for myself and family in (gasp!) knits, which I have discovered are less intimidating than you think. I listen to podcasts while I sew, mostly science and history like Ologies and Stuff you Missed in History Class, but I love Pod Save America, who are big Jen Psaki fans. Also, I’m old enough to be your big sister and I’m also a huge “Breath of the Wild” fan, so I love the woman gamer bits you share on occasion.

Yay! I love that you read We Are Bob! I really liked that one. Great to see that you tried the new pattern - I think that draped look fits well with Merida. I'm just chugging along with making my purses and figuring out pricing and have to start setting up my online shop! So exciting (and scary). So you're like totally noctural now!

    Oh that’s beautiful!!
Our lock down is being down graded so a little more freedom. Of course we are now getting a snow storm so there may not be too much freedom. We are only expecting 15cm (6inches) so not too bad. Unless they call a snow day then I will need good packing snow so we can build something!!
I love the Bobiverse!!! I am waiting impatiently for a new book!!

I'm currently working on a 1890's cancan Esmeralda and am taking inspiration from the moulin rouge dancers of that time 😄 and also, working on a Merida but the once upon a time series version 🙂 can't wait to see more of your project!

Started steaming my wool (to my wintercoat) when you talked about steaming your wool. It was a good point you made, so I decided I needed to do it too. Finished at the same time as the video ended.
I feel very professional when I do all the "extra" stuff that is not actually sewing but is helping the project in some way.

I'm new here but already love your videos so much! You're super talented, the overskirt is so beautiful! Love to hear you chatting! Today, I was hearing this while working on a skirt myself, though a much simpler one (gotta start somewhere!). \O

I absolutely ADORE your ironing pad. You did mention that there is butcher block underneath. You might want to look into getting some of the butcher block oil to use periodically, because even if you can manage to keep all the steam off of it, the wild flux in humidity that happens in California ("hi" from a few hundred miles south) will do stupid things to butcher block if you don't periodically throw some deep conditioning at it. Super duper love this project.

I live in Amsterdam, and spent this "valentine weekend" walking on water! Heeheheh The canals near us were frozen so that was fun! Nice to hear we're not the only ones who don't "celebrate" stuff just because commerce wants us to! I have not been sewing much at all, but I'm relearning how to knit yeah for youtube!! Love the fabric!

Yesss, I love Disney reimaginings, this is going to look awesome! I'm potentially making a Regency Snow White - not my favourite princess, but I want to make her puffy sleeves into a spencer. I'm only making the undergarments at the moment though, so I may change my mind when the deadline starts looming!
Also you are one of many people who have recommended the Dresden Files, so I've just started reading Storm Front.

Many many many years ago my cosplay was Merida. I was very lucky with my wig (from China) and I made dress and cape from sketch. I ordered the tartan from the movie from a fabric printing website. I was very happy with it and I wore it to a the first Dutch Comic Con and a fantasy fair called Elfia in the Netherlands. Keep up the good work and be BRAVE :)

I am loving this! Disney makes me so happy! I've made a Rococo version of Belle in her yellow dress and even though its not a Disney Princess for Halloween this year I would love to make an 1880s bustle version of the cast members outfit from the Haunted Mansion.

Thank you so much for the tip on pre-steaming wool! I've got the AD Cape on my list to make and have the wool for it. It's just down list right now.
