If you follow Ricoma International on any of our social media channels, you’ve probably heard that we’ve recently added the RICOH Ri 2000 Direct to Garment (DTG) Printer to our product line.
In this episode of Apparel Academy, we’ll be looking at a few of the key differences and similarities between the RICOH Ri 1000 and RICOH Ri 2000 to help you decide which printer best suits your business' needs.
First, let’s look at what direct to garment (DTG) printing actually is.
DTG printing is the process by which a printer can print a design directly onto a garment without the need for transfer paper. First, pre-treat your garment with pre-treatment liquid. Next, use a heat press to dissolve the pre-treatment liquid so that it can be cured into your fabric. After that, load your pre-treated garment into your Ricoh DTG printer and press print. Once your printer is done, simply heat press your garment one more time to bind the ink to your fabric.
Now, let’s see how these printers compare in terms of efficiency and profitability.
In terms of efficiency, the RICOH Ri 1000 and RICOH Ri 2000 have a lot in common. Since both have self-maintenance features - including an intelligent self-cleaning and white ink circulation system - both printers are always ready at any given time to print. Both also boast a quick-change platen feature as well as direct to film (DTF) printing capability. More on this later!
Where these printers differ in terms of efficiency is in speed and ease of maintenance. The RICOH Ri 1000 can print a 10 x 8 graphic on a tee-shirt in under 28 seconds. Thanks to its dual carriage print system, the RICOH Ri 2000 can do the same size graphic in under 10 seconds. The RICOH Ri 2000 also offers an automatic platen height adjusting system and comes with a special head cleaning jig that you can use to clean the machine automatically.
For profitability, both have a very healthy profit margin of around $20 per garment. Also, since both printers have DTF print capability, you can print a design from film onto a garment that hasn’t been pre-treated. Not only does this allow you to save money on pre-treating supplies, but you’ll also be spared the pain of having to invest money in a separate DTF printer.
Where these printers differ in terms of profitability is in the initial cost. The Ri 2000 has a higher up-front cost than the RICOH Ri 1000 - meaning that you’ll have to print more garments each day to re-coop your initial investment. However, because the RICOH Ri 2000 can print garments much faster, you can process larger orders more quickly - maximizing your turnaround times and overall profitability.

Nope! You would just use the same software that already comes with the DTG machines.

Can it do just white ink on black shirts too? I've been seeing some printers reviews saying their printer can't do that. Also can you use an Apple operating system?
Hi Eddie. The RICOH printers have the availability to print on dark garments, or any garment that needs white ink. You can also use an Apple operating system. The RICOH machines are supported up to Mac OS X 10.7. (These models work with the standard USB driver in the operating system.
What blanks t shirts that work well with dtg are $2-3? its more like $4-6.

I read that both these can print DTG and DTF. How does that work?
In the same software, you would choose different settings and then instead of a garment, you put transfer paper on the DTG platen. It will then print the image with the white ink on top and then you cover it with powder and move forward with the DTF transfer process.

Bought a Rico 1000 has screen . clog issues. Splash screen is what they call it. They send me a new chip still doesn’t work took too long now there’s clog issues on the print head now because of their problem they want you to buy a new print head. Does that make sense?

Why cant you stockpile projects with DTG ?
You can, but you will have to do T shirt's individually and store them. With DTF you can have multiple designs ready to go, and when you have an order you just heat press them on a shirt.
Not the greatest video. You cannot skip out on the costs of rent and labor and say the gross profit is $20 per shirt! So frustrating when those numbers are illustrated in these videos, you guys always skip that! Like we want to get a pay cheque at the end of the day. Not just reinvest every last cent! Thanks for the video though. Comparison videos are always so valuable!

We have plenty of pricing resources and videos that account for the amount of money you want to make an hour and how to price your items based on all the variables. This also depends on whether you are running your business from home or have a storefront, the majority of our customers run their machines from home.
I make $20 in profits for low quantity orders but your right realistically for wholesale you won’t make that much off each unit
I own a Ri 2000 and it’s a pice of shit. It had just gave me headaches since the first month I got it. Only two years and I have put more than 6,000 on replacing parts. It is a bad machine please do not buy it. Or You would regret.
