  • This was my first section hike of the Appalachian Trail. I started at Pen Mar Park and walked a short way north to the Mason Dixon line which is the border of Pennsylvania and Maryland, then turned around and hiked south bound for 40 miles to Harpers Ferry.

I really enjoyed your video. Especially liked how you included your cooking, your set up, hearing the rain from inside your tent, and the process of breaking down your tent in the morning. Too many hiking videos only show the hike and the views. I like how you included all the other parts. It is more than just the walk. It is the entire experience of living outdoors. Kudos to you for continuing on without your pooch. That couldn't have been easy. Looking forward to more Hiking with Aaron videos!

I am sad I didn’t see this when you posted it but better late than never. I enjoyed the video. I lived near that part of the trail and many of the landmarks are super familiar. I am now planning to hike the AT thru hike in 2024. I have been a single dad for most my adult life. My first was born when I was 23 yrs old and my youngest will graduate in 2025. I have another child that will graduate 2022 so I split the difference to do my hike. I didn’t want miss them graduate but my health is becoming an issue so I don’t want wait until 2026. I plan on hiking with my dog Red. My wife told me I had to take someone. I am learning about the extra effort you need to take with a dog on the trail and your video helps. I was happy you shared when your dog was sore and needed picked up. Too many videos seem to only show the pleasant parts. Gives you a unrealistic view of hiking. Thanks and hope you share more content in teh future.

Nice job! Enjoyed your video as I was thinking of doing this section soon (I live in Frederick, MD). Too many hiking videos are centered on gear, and I like that you focused on the experience with a very humble and unassuming demeanor. Hi. I really appreciate your sharing this!
It is very timely for me as I am about to section-hike Maryland and Pennsylvania next year.
I have made it from Springer Mtn to Harper's Ferry and am looking forward to the next two states.
Your video really helped me in understanding what to expect in Maryland.
    Comments:
    1. Enjoyed the style of photography and narration
    2. Croc in the swamp - very funny!
    3. Hope your dog is better. Enjoyed seeing the dog enjoying the water.
    Questions:
    1. Can one camp anywhere along the trail in Maryland?
    2. What backpack did you use?
    3. How did the Frogg Toggs work for you in the rain (kept you dry, were they too hot to wear)?
    4. I saw the water bottles were attached to your pack shoulder straps. How could I get some for mine?
I have subscribed to your channel and will look for more videos on the AT.
    God Bless...

    • @hikingwithaaron
      @hikingwithaaron  4 года назад

Hi Ken, thanks for the kind comments and thanks for watching my video. This Maryland trip was my first overnight backpacking trip. It was a great section to start out with. I hiked SOBO and it was much rockier than I expected in the northern part. The southern part was much easier terrain.
      1. I'm not sure what the rules are for camping along the AT in Maryland. The shelters seemed pretty close together so I just camped at a shelter each night. I don't recall seeing anyone stealth camping. I've also hiked the New Jersey section and the rules there are they do not allow stealth camping, although I saw several that did.
      2. My backpack is the Osprey Exos 58 liter. It was fairly popular on the trail. I saw quite a few of them out there. I found it comfortable. I carried 30-35 pounds depending on food and water. I'm trying to cut it down but that can get expensive.
It's my first and only pack so I can't compare it to anything else.
      3. I only used the Frogg Toggs for an hour or two and the rain came down quickly and didn't last long so I can't really say if it would keep you dry for an extended period of time. I have since bought a REI rain jacket that I like much better. The Frogg Toggs is not durable at all. I have several rips in it just from brushing up against branches and bushes. There are also no pockets which I don't like.
      4. The clips are called aqua clips and were very inexpensive. You can get them at aquaclip.com. They are very nice.
I plan to hike Pennsylvania at the beginning of June. Who knows, maybe I'll see you out there. You can see a day hike I did at Lehigh Gap on my page, as well as my hike of the New Jersey section if you are interested. May God bless you and keep you safe out on the trail.

    • @hikingwithaaron
      @hikingwithaaron  3 года назад

You're absolutely right about the boots for Nala. I do have some for her and just didn't bring them on this trip. I really didn't expect the rocks on the northern part of the trail so I left them at home. Lesson learned.
I had oatmeal and raisins for breakfast. A pepperoni stick for lunch and Ramen for dinner. Cliff bars and candy for snacks. I ate much less than I actually brought with me. I had never done a backpacking trip before and I wasn't sure how hungry I would get. I actually sent food home with my mom when she came to pick up Nala. I probably should have forced myself to eat more. It was a great learning experience, that's for sure.

    Hi Aaron.
    Really enjoyed this.
As mentioned 7 months ago, I was very interested in seeing what Maryland looks like since I was supposed to have done that section and on to Duncanon, PA in June.
    Wellllll.....
I had surgery on June 3. Removed a bone spur on left heel that was negatively affecting my Achilles tendon. He cleaned up the tendon and I'm on limited walking as I write 4 weeks later. Long therapy and return to walking, then hiking. Had to do it though.
So, my June, 2020 trip will now be perhaps in May, 2021.
But, watching this was another blessing and I thank you for it.
I also watched your New Jersey movie which I'll comment on there.
Question: Did you do any more of PA in 2019 as you mentioned you might (besides Lehigh Gap)?
Regardless, God Bless for your movies, the way they are photographed and narrated.
    Very enjoyable...

Thanks so much for your kind comments. Sorry to hear that your surgery pushed back your hike. I hope that it will make it a lot easier for you once you're healed.
I had to postpone my 2020 hikes as well. I had planned to do Damascus, VA to Grayson Highlands in April and that was canceled because of Covid. My PA hike in early June was also canceled and I changed it to a GA hike and that got canceled as well. Things just weren't falling into place this summer. Hopefully next year will work out.

I re-watched this video recently as I in May, I was finally able to hike north from Harper's Ferry thru Maryland.

    Question:
I noticed on your pack's shoulder straps you had a "holder" for a water bottle.
I'm thinking of getting something like this.
Where did you get the water bottle holder?
    Thanks, and God Bless!

Congratulations on your hike. I hope you had a great time. I got that clip from aquaclip.com. I suggest getting some shock cord to wrap around the bottom of the bottle to reduce it bouncing around. Maybe your pack already has some cord in that spot. Thanks for checking out my video again.

@@hikingwithaaron Thank you Aaron, I appreciate your information on aquaclip.
Forgot to mention: to me - the hardest part of MD was the climb up to the Raven Rock shelter from Little Antietem Creek. It was the end of a 13-mile day, and we carried all of our water needs up the mountain. Plus, it was warm and somewhat humid. I should have used the water source .3 from the shelter. It was flowing nice and not hard to get to. This trip was a "lessons learned". God Bless you and your family...

Well, I've only done it once and it was during my Easter Break (I'm a school teacher). So, I would say the spring and fall would be best. I'd rather it be a little cold than too hot. There were plenty of water sources in the spring but I think many of those would dry up in the summer. That would be my biggest concern. It's a great hike, enjoy your time out there. Thanks for the sub.

Sorry for not replying to this earlier, I must have missed your comment. The clips are called aqua clips. Go to aquaclip.com to order them. I had a great time hiking Maryland. You'll have a great time. Lots of great scenery.

That's a MSR isopro fuel canister. It contains 80/20 blend of isobutane and propane. You could get them pretty much anywhere they sell camping gear. I got mine from REI, but you could get them at Walmart or Cabelas. I got my 4 oz. canister for $5. I was using a MSR Pocket Rocket 2 for the stove.

It's actually 41 miles. Mason Dixon line is 1067. Harper's Ferry is mile 1026. 1067-1026=41, but who's counting?
