  • On April 19-22, 2022 I did a solo backpacking trip on the Appalachian Trail from Damascus, VA to Grayson Highlands State Park, VA. The total mileage was just about 36 miles.
I tried out 2 new big items on this trip. The first was my tent. I went from the MSR Hubba Hubba, which I really liked, but I wanted to cut some weight. I saved 2 pounds with my new Dan Durston X-Mid 1 tent. It is my first trekking pole tent. I really liked this tent. It's so quick and easy to setup and break down.
The 2nd big item was my backpack. I was using the Osprey Exos 58 liter pack. Again, I had no problem with that pack, I just wanted something a little lighter. I think I saved about 1.5-2 pounds with the switch to the Outdoor Vitals Shadowlight 60. That pack worked very well. It was a little squeaky, but I'll have to find a fix for that on my next hike.
My video camera was the DJI Pocket 2.
I use Adobe Premiere to edit.
Any questions about my hike and gear, please comment below.
    Thanks for watching.

Amazing!! I just subscribed to your channel. I accidentally found it since my friend and I will be hiking this AT section very soon.
I love the details, narration, and all the things about this video. I barely make comments on hiking videos, but this one really had me on all sorts of emotions. I had hiked the AT section of all of the Smokies end of April, and this reminded me why I needed to return to the AT! Thank you SO much for sharing your adventures and all of your details!
PS: loved that you prayed for God's provision!

Hey I enjoyed your video! My wife and I just recently visited this area we camped in a travel trailer at Grayson Highlands and did some day hiking on the AT. We saw some of the horses on our day hike, it was a great experience. We also saw several through hikers. We also rode our bikes down the Virginia Creeper and ate lunch at the Damascus Diner. This is a great area to visit and we would like to go back some day. Your video was very well done and I appreciate your sharing it with us! Thanks!

What can I say Aaron, this was phenomenal. This was an incredibly detailed and beautiful video. The thumbnail to start with was phenomenal! Your narration is the best I have come across on youtube. There was so much content and details on this video. I can see that you really put your heart into this video, spectacular content! Grayson Highlands is on my list for sure. what a beautiful world we live in.

I really appreciated the views you had. I think my favorite part was your camp site on the second night. Wow, I would've loved to camp at a spot like that! Beautiful.
Your tent is pretty interesting. It looks like it has no floor. I'm not sure I'd like sleeping in that - especially if it rains! Dane

@@Featheredprop Thanks so much for your kind comments, Dane. Your hiking videos are definitely an inspiration for the style I've done my last two backpacking trips. Looking forward to seeing your speed hike of the LHHT.
This tent is definitely unusual. It is always sold out and I had to order it the second it was available in January. The tent sold out in 3 minutes. Yes, it definitely has a floor. I'm no minimalist, for sure. It weighs 31 ounces and has a unique design. It pitches in a couple minutes and you can pitch it in the rain without getting the inside wet. I only used it for 3 nights but I'm looking forward to getting out again in it.
Again, thanks for watching and commenting.

Whats another good three night hike on the AT from Grayson highlands heading North

    • @hikingwithaaron
      @hikingwithaaron  2 года назад

I'm not familiar with anything north of Grayson Highlands. I hope to do all of Shenandoah National Park on the AT next year, but that's quite a bit longer at around 100 miles. From what I've seen on RUclips, it looks like there is a section called the Triple Crown. It includes places called Dragon's Tooth, McAfee Knob, and Tinker Cliffs. I've never been there but I think that's one of the highlights of VA.

3 days further at this pace would get you to Atkins where it crosses rt 81. There are some cool spots between. I did grayson highlands to bland last spring over 6 days.

That's a difficult question to answer but there are many campsites along the trail and several shelters. There are many maps and resources online to tell you where to camp. I use the app called FarOut. There is a fee for it but it was invaluable to me on the trail.

It's approximately 30 miles if you follow the AT the whole way.
