Couldn't agree more. I love the quick cut to Six's reaction during the end of that speech. It's just a super powerful scene. Mary McDonnell is amazing.
Clarification: Galactica’s FTL drive is not permanently damaged. Tyrol deactivated it by pulling out a certain part/component. Like pulling out a fuse. They can put it back in at any time. The thing Tyrol saw immediately after were cracks in Galactic’s structural beams. (Nothing to do with what Tyrol did with with the FTL)
"Are you alive?" Those are the first words spoken in this series, but I think what can be easily overlooked are the words Six says immediately after. "Are you alive?" she asks. "Prove it," she commands. Well, this mutiny arc is where I think the show challenges the characters to do just that. For weeks now, we've seen the crew at their lowest after the discovery of Earth. Kara seems more lost than ever, Lee stuck dealing with the Quorum, Baltar stuck with his flock, Tyrol broken and content with simple handiwork, Bill just flat out tired, while Laura seems to have all but given up on life itself. And then the mutiny happens and everyone just snaps back life. Caught unprepared for this mutiny, they all jump back into action to retake the ship. "Feels good being alive, doesn't it? I'm feeling right for the first time in weeks," Kara says. When told Bill's dead and she should give up, Laura gives one hell of an emphatic, "No." Confronted by his recent decisions by Geata, Bill just tells him, "Shove it up your ass." They fight back. They fight to survive and it ends with Bill strolling confidently back into CIC, gun drawn with an army behind him. A defiant inversion of how he last left this same spot. "Are you alive? Prove it." Here, I think everyone does.
As always thank you for the wonderful 'after' discussion. Something I particularly like in this two-parter is bringing back the sense of family on Galactica that we had during the mini-series. I don't know if you remember, but literally the first scene onboard, is Adama having almost everyone telling him how grateful they are to have served under his command. Of those people, ALL that remain were key parts of this arc on one side or the other. Other than that, Mary McDonnell brought the rage to Laura Roslin. The sense of utter outrage that these people Bill has protected and fought for, for years, could turn on him? Palpable. "No! Not now. Not ever." It gave me chills back when the show aired, and it gives me chills still. Yet another example of the outstanding performances we were treated to, giving voice to a writing team who were at the absolute pinnacle of their profession. Jeez I love this show.
8:55 I think you guys might misunderstand the word Harbinger. "a person or thing that announces or signals the approach of another." "A harbinger is something that comes before and that shows what will follow in the future" Its more of a messenger or a sign, not the cause of it. Example, seeing a Robin shows that spring is arriving, it dosnt bring the spring. Just saying 🙂
Aye, harbinger essentially means messenger or a sign. Marvel's Silver Surfer, for example, was the harbinger of doom (in this case, doom would be Galactus). The Silver Surfer shows up just before Galactus does.
They actually filmed the Quorum execution, and it's actually brutal. I think the way they did it where you just hear the gunfire, and see the aftermath does a great job without seeing the brutality.
Sometimes it’s powerful to see it, sometimes it’s powerful not too. He wasn’t even in the room. If he pulled the trigger we should have seen it but this played out with the right viewpoint.
Gotta remember the Galactica was already 50 years old by the time the second war breaks out. She is well past her prime. So much so, that they didn't jump with Galactica anymore by the beginning of the series. They weren't even sure if the Galactica could still jump at all. The original Jupiter class battlestars got a rushed redesign midway through first the war. To up armor, up gun and better equip them. Tyrol explains why it's happening in a later episode.
And she starts out the series by face tanking a nuke and jump around 200 times in episode one lol. They dropped her into atmosphere into a straight free fall, she'd done 10 round trips through that star cluster where Kat died and these are just some of the major events lol
Galactica is also missing most of her armor plating. Not only was she old, she was in the process of being DE-COMMISSIONED in the mini-series. An entire launch bay was rendered useless ("it's a gift shop now") as part of the journey to becoming a historic landmark/teaching site/tourist destination. The whole reason they had to go to Ragnar at the beginning was to arm the remaining weapons (removing ammunition will have been one of the first steps to her de-commissioning). The pulse engines Lee uses in the mini-series to fool the Cylons into thinking they'd successfully shot down what would become Colonial One, had also just been removed from Galactica. She's a tough old bird, and she's as much a character in the show as the flesh ones.
@@derrisreaditbefore yep, she underwent a refit shortly before the miniseries removing that armor, half her main weaponry and 1/3 of her CIWS guns. If you look at her in Blood and Chrome her back is bristling with artillery batteries.
@@neutchain7838 Oh yeah, went from 24 to 40 main batteries!, I wish they had done something with the Blood & Chrome stuff. I'd have loved to see the Galatica and her sister ships in the prime.

It's not overstepping for the Civilian (President) and Military (Admiral) leaders to order that all ships receive the Cylon FLT upgrades. You have a fleet of roughly 30 to 40 ships that have for the most part been in constant use for over four years. They have very limited resources and a demoralized population because of the condition of Earth that was supposed to be their final goal. The entire fleet can only go so far with human FTL drives, and upgrading the drives means the fleet doubles their chances of finding a planet they can colonize and prosper upon. It makes absolute sense that Roslin and Adama would agree all the ships have to receive the upgrade if humanity is to survive, otherwise they are forced to leave nearly half the population behind. And Roslin already lived through that decision when they had to leave the non-FTL ships behind in the miniseries and it has eaten at her all these years later.
"Those guys (and gals / the Quorum) didn't do anything!" Oh, they did SOMETHING- they refused to acknowledge Zarek as the leader (that he, in his mind, DESERVES to be). Now, Michael Trucco (the actor who plays Anders) was in a serious accident during the filming which could've made him immobile (think Christopher Reeves); however, the idea for his character came about before. Also, he made a (nearly?) full recovery, so the accident didn't play into it. Lest we forget, Kelly's like 3rd in command at the start of the series, as was so until he planted the bombs to try and kill Baltar The handkerchief on Adama's chest is a common practice in firing squad executions; 1) gives a target and 2) shows that the executed is actually shot (since the blood would show up very clearly) The ending- very poignant... I mean, Gaeta is one of the first people we saw in the show, the idealistic young kid (who's also smart as a whip and just "good") essentially get pushed thru the wringer and keep making the wrong choices over and over- so that even when he's right, it goes wrong... and then getting that last bit of humanizing before the execution Also, how much do you think Kara, sometime soon, goes to Lee and is like "Betcha wish you let me take the shot on the Astral Queen (the prison transport) way back when?"
Apollo had Zarek pegged when they first met on the Astral Queen. I'm not sure if Zarek ever saw himself as clearly as Apollo immediately did. Gaeta's arc was one of the biggest tragedies of the show, but it was a great one among many great arcs
I would say the best arc is Tigh's. That man have been through the ringer lol. Who would've thought at the beginning when he denied any humanitarian help to help that 50k people when they showed up at Ragnar. But I agree, Gaeta's arc was great and it's done really well.
Gaeta wanted to do what he thought was right, and do it “by the book”. Zarek just wanted power, by any means, and revenge against those who he thought had blocked him from attaining that power. They were not necessarily wrong in their ideals, but their misguided means led to them to lose the contest. The truth is told by the ones left standing in the end.
Yea, I can feel for him. Not gonna say he’s the bad guy. He wanted justice and the charges are kinda correct. We just can see the bigger picture. Tom Zarek was the cancer.
I literally just found out that Apollo (Jamie Bamber) has a posh middle class British accent...ugh it sounds really weak. And how did I not know this before!!!!!
Easily the best episode arc of the entire series. I like the ending but this was the high light for me. Made all that lee and starbuck ark bs third season worth while. Not entirely the tye and 6 wtf writers on coke bs but you know you gotta roll a hard six sometimes.

So much power in her voice

Roslyns speech at Zarek goves me goosebumps every. Damn. Time.
