- Hi Friends! Today I'm going to be doing an in depth review of my 5th grader's homeschool curriculum for this year. This will include spelling, language arts (grammar, writing and literature), math, spanish, typing, handwriting, history and vocabulary. She also participated in social studies, science and Bible, but we did those as group subjects, so that will be in another video.
I'd say this year was a success as far as curriculum goes. We did have to make some adjustments along the way for math, but overall, all of the curriculum we chose this year was a good fit. I will say that although we loved this one curriculum, we will not be continuing it next year for various reasons (I'll explain more in my video!). Make sure to check out my other videos below.

hi,I just want to let you know this video was very helpful I love hearing about what other people do for homeschooling
Ok thanks
Watching preschool shows in other languages are super helpful for picking up basic vocabulary and a lower level if speech for a beginner.
We definitely noticed with Fix It Grammar that doing it 4 days a week worked better for understanding and it helped with wanting to do it versus once a week when we were struggling with it!! Thank you so much for all of the updates 😊
Very insightful and encompassing reviews. As a certified teacher and new homeschool mom of a 4th grader, I thank you!
Your girls all sound like they are all really good students and love learning. Great job momma ❤
My oldest is very naturally motivated. And I think it helps motivate her sisters because they look up to her.
I have to say fix it grammar is very good. My son started in 4th grade but also does IEW writing lessons and that really helps to understand the fit it grammar more. It’s a really wonderful program.
We did BJU English a few years ago and my son didn’t like it. He felt it took forever haha I hope ur daughter enjoys it.
Already looking forward to next year's review lol. We've been using bju and all the different subjects are getting cumbersome so we're looking into tgtb to combine things.
I totally agree that Fix it grammar The Nose Tree works well for 5th grade! My son finished it this year and is going to do the next for 6th grade. I do think doing it in one day may have burnt her out. It is meant to have a big impact in little bites over time. It takes just a couple minutes for him to do daily and he ended up really enjoying it, to my surprise lol.
Homeschool Spanish is amazing! I have 4 boys and they love it.
We did TGATB for 3 years and mainly for writing we dropped it and switched to Essentials in Writing. He is also a reluctant writer and I felt the same way!
EIW looks great too!
Have you considered adding in the fix it grammar cards? I’m planning on doing them family style in my morning basket next year, just to drill the definitions with all three of my kids (3rd & 5th grade, but only my 5th grader will be doing fix it grammar). I think it is easy for kids to skip over the instructional pages in this program and I think drilling the definitions & examples will really help with that. My 5th grader will also be continuing with the Nose Tree level. I think he enjoys it but he doesn’t ace it for sure.
You made me laugh when you said: “doctor signature handwriting “ 😂
Such a helpful video thankyou so much for sharing! What Spanish curriculum are you using for your younger kids?
They use the same, though it's very sporadic!
Grammar in BJU would be MORE than enough for Grammar. 😊
How many hours does she do?
It’s really hard to say because each homeschool looks different depending on how many kids you have and activities, etc. she usually finished 5th grade in about 4 hours or so each day (some days shorter and some longer)
I had the exact same feeling towards TGTB math. My son started with level 6, and we both were burnt out after the first couple weeks. We will be trying Teachjng Textbooks for the first time this coming year.
I hope it works well for you!
My daughter did not like Fix It Grammar. We tried several times. We also use TGTB. I did not make her continue because she writes well and uses her grammar correctly most of the time. It just wasn't for her.
Can you make a video of what they read this year?
I’d love to, but they read mostly library books this year so there’s no way I’d be able to share that all 😕
I’m wondering if you are apart of a co op. I need advice or experience from another homeschooling mom that is apart of a co op that teaches history and science. These subjects are taught once a week and I’m unsure if I should teach this subjects at home even though their getting exposure at co op. Any words of wisdom? Thanks
I’m not, sorry! 😕 we’ve always done our own thing. I’d ask the fellow moms in the co op to get ideas of what they do.
What co op are u thinking? We do a co op I can try to help @marisabullock3065
Did u ever do a video for the literacy guides u picked up? Maybe I’m missing that video.
I’m not sure what that is… Do you mean the literature? I haven’t done any designated videos for next year’s curriculum yet…just sharing our picks for next year ☺️
@@thepracticalhomeschooler for the books they will have for assigned reading u mentioned getting a guide with questions
@@thepracticalhomeschoolerso in middle of the night I woke up and realized it was a completely different mom that mentioned the guides. Y’all look similar and I’m dumb haha. I’m
Sorry for that confusion
Sloppy doctor handwriting 😂 I used to work in a pharmacy and I had to call the doctors office ALL THE TIME because I couldn’t read their handwriting 😂😂
We started with Fix it Grammar in grade 3 but quickly dropped it. As you said, it was way too much for grade 3. We will are picking it back up now for grade 6.
TGATB Math Level 5 really can be a lot. On days where it gets too long, we‘ll do half a lesson.
