- It's time for another homeschool curriculum reveal video, and today I'm focusing on second grade curriculum! I love researching homeschool curriculum, and I'm so happy with my second grade homeschool curriculum choices for the school year. There are so many great homeschooling curriculum choices out there, and we definitely have eclectic homeschool curriculum taste However, we love Charlotte Mason curriculum and learning through literature, and you can definitely see that reflected in some of our homeschool choices. The curriculum we use is varied, but, ultimately, I want to instill a love of learning in my children that will last a lifetime. Curriculum may look different for every homeschool family, but whether you have a Charlotte Mason homeschool, prefer eclectic homeschooling, or lean toward something entirely different, I think just about every homeschool mom has that desire for her children. I've loved your videos! I have a 2nd grader and kindergartener as well and we are doing The Good & The Beautiful. We did the language arts last year and this year we are switching to their math. It's so much more FUN that our previous curriculum. She's actually excited for math now!! We also read ALL THE 📚!! We buy them but also go to the library weekly for a huge haul. We love reading!! Which is why I love your channel 😊

Loved this video, you're always full of great suggestions. We too have a rising 2nd grader and are so excited for our year. We use Abeka cursive for handwriting and love it. We've done it since kindergarten which is where they really do the teaching of technique for their program. We are trying TGATB for LA this year, we've done Abeka the other years and loved it. Lots of living books sprinkled in and tons of read alouds. We love our morning basket time! One logic book your girls may enjoy is the Mind Benders books. They have several levels and really enjoy them in our loop. We also bring in a lot of logic through board games. You would probably also really enjoy TGATB typing program. And if you're wanting to dive into a more traditional Charlotte Mason method of teaching you'd likely enjoy Delectable Education. They're purists for sure but a wealth of information. I absolutely have loved the curriculum at Simply Charlotte Mason too. We use their habit study as well as artist, hymn and composer studies. Love! 🍩
You’ll see Simply Charlotte Mason pop up as I share videos about family subjects/morning basket! Looking forward to using one of their programs. I’ll have to look into Delectable Education. We’re definitely not purists, but I love learning more about the CM approach and getting ideas about what could work well in our homeschool.

I thought I was a minimalist homeschooler then I saw all the resources and I love language and Literature so I can't resist.

On your recommendation in another video, we're also doing Math Mammoth. No fluffy stories!!
We're also using Gentle Grammar too!
For literature, we're doing the "A Year of Tales" program. It's based on Beatrix Potter's stories. There's a Christmas and a Spring with Peter Rabbit unit that we're doing too.
I'm planning a United States geography/light US history curriculum for the year.
To tag along with that, we're using the Simple Studies North American animals and Meadow Creatures for science.
Teaching cursive too! I agree, it's important.
I also have that aldi book too. I always grab them when they have them!

Hope you guys love Math Mammoth! I really think it’s going to work well for us. Gentle Grammar is one of the best free resources out there, I think. I love how simple it is. We have started Gentle Grammar level 1 in our Summer Review. So far, my oldest (soon to be second grader sort of) is liking it. She is learning without having to quiz her, "what is a noun?" Give me five examples of a noun, etc.

OMGOSH, I know you have no control and neither do I on my channel but I always like to know if awful ads are playing on mine and man, there was just one on yours. UGH so frustrating!!!!!! Hi! We are a new homeschool family of three (8th, 4th and 2nd). This will be our second year and we loved using AAR level 2 last year. My first grader went from just knowing the public school sight words (about 25) to reading small chapter books! It is fun and engaging. We used level 4 with my 3rd grader and she flew through it and then we switched over to TGTB level 3. We still have about 40 lessons left in level 3 and hope to whittle that down to about 20 left over lessons by the end of summer so we will have time to finish level 3 and 4 during our regular school time. We also used Bookshark (secular version of Sonlight) for my son last year for LA and Reading with history- he did not enjoy the LA but loved the History so we are doing level H for this coming year and Level B for my two girls. We read so many great books!!! We use Saxon for math and had success with oldest and youngest struggling with my rising 4th grader (she had no foundation from public school) but we added Prodigy as a fun way to practice math over the summer. Thanks for the videos, I would love to start a channel but just don't think I'm interesting enough lol and we are secular, most content is Christian (which we also use such as TGTB) Have a great school year!!!

We used Math Mammoth last year for my first grader. It is so effective. My son really enjoyed the free videos, too. We are using Miquon Math Lab for our summer school math, and will return to MM in the fall for 2nd grade.

We are using Math Mammoth this year too! We have also gone really literature based with Lightning Literature for our secular family. Great picks!
I just learned about Lightning Literature recently, and it sounds great! I love that there are so many literature-based options these days for both Christian and secular homeschools.
I love curriculum videos!
My 2nd grader will be using TGATB language arts, math, and handwriting. We are not ready for cursive yet but definitely will do it! To me it is just wrong not to teach it.
For our family subjects (not every day for each one):
-Laying Down the Rails (character)
-Baltimore Catechism/Bible (we are Catholic)
-Exploring Nature with Children
-SQUILT music
We are doing Song School Spanish this summer and I hope to continue that. And probably will use Sing a Song of Seasons for some poetry.
I may also work in some Five in a Row. I'm hoping to. I don't want to overwhelm my boys I just get really excited about all the great curriculum out there! Oh! Notgrass History too, but if it's too much I won't worry, because I'm not big on history and too much science before 3rd grade.

Since you asked 😅 we're using Logic of English Foundations for Language Arts and Kindergarten Math with Confidence. I'm also following A Humble Place Charlotte Mason inspired curriculum guide for Year.5 to get her ready for CM Year1. 🤞
I was just looking at A Humble Place to get some ideas for how I want to handle our readings for morning time, enrichment, etc. she has some great resources! I’ll be sure to keep everyone up-to-date on everything goes.

I feel exactly the same! In some ways I’m thankful Kennedy went to public school for kindergarten so I have something to compare it to, but I’m also glad we made the switch so early on. One good thing to come out of COVID, haha!
I'm trying something other than Math Mammoth this year. I didn't do a great job of using her videos ahead of the lessons. I loved that it's so simple and open and go. I'd love to see your schedule. My second grader is very smart but getting him to actually do curriculum is tough. Maybe girls are more willing?! Good luck!

Maria is great I was very confused on how to proceed with my second grader after I pulled her from public school and gave her math mammoth placement assessment. I contacted her after giving my daughter the math assessment my daughter was really “behind.” Maria took the time to call me back, I sent her copy of daughter’s assessment and she guided me from there. That was amazing!

I will also have a K student and a 2nd grader! I saw a lot of new ideas here, thanks for sharing! Here’s what we are using:
K- The Good and the Beautiful Math, LA, handwriting.
2nd - The Good and the Beautiful math, LA, handwriting, and typing. Well-Trained Mind First Language Lessons level 2.
Shared together in “morning time” with age-appropriate expectations: Song School Latin, Answers in Genesis Bible, Story of the World history, and a loop of poetry, copywork, picture study, and math things like Life of Fred or skip counting practice.
For science, we are doing Simply Charlotte Mason a Year of Nature Journaling/ Nature Study (I can’t recall the exact name).
We will have a variety of fun read alouds, themed games/puzzles, piano lessons, and swim lessons.

I started my oldest with Singapore, but it quickly became really challenging! Last year (he was in third grade) we used Teaching Textbooks, but I found that was not really rigorous enough. My second child did Math Mammoth last year in first grade and we LOVED it. She did all of grade one and half of grade two and got such a great handle on the WHY of math. So, no big surprise, but they will both be doing Math Mammoth this year and I'm really looking forward to it!

I have an incoming 2nd grader too, but the curriculum I chose is a mix of 1st grade and to transition to 2nd grade due to other areas that my kid had a hard time with. Chose Timberdoodle customizable kita because of the available manipulatives and learning games. Got 2nd-hand workbooks from HPB, Rainbow Resource and Ebay. Thanks for guiding us on how to arrange curriculums!

Thanks for this fun video. My next to youngest kiddo will be in second grade. He will do Math Mammoth, nature study, Story of the World, TGTB handwriting, Spelling Plus, and Song School Spanish. We will also be doing geography, civics, and Bible, using various resources. We will do composer study and artist study from Ambleside Online. We do language arts in the style of Read Aloud Revival along with Explode the Code, and we are part of a co-op that covers many topics.

I'm so glad I found this video. I used to homeschool my daughter and getting ready to homeschool for the second grade. I'm not liking the way schools are being run now. I am totally going to go the sonlight route you took and add on the explode the code and worldly wise and I don't like common core math so going horizons math but these are awesome and I probably won't go so language arts heavy but I have all about spelling as a backup
We landed on math mammoth for one of my sons as well! My rising 1st grader has been very frustrated by math and we are excited to start it! I haven’t heard of Night Zookeeper, I’ll definitely check that out for more 1st and 2nd grader! Oh… and 🍩 😉

Those Good Grades books are GREAT! I thought the same thing - for that price they are un replaceable. The Abeke books are AH-MAZING and that was such a great score on the price!

My son is special needs and starting first grade and master books worked great for us! It was simple and didn’t overwhelm him. The good and the beautiful language arts was too advanced for him so we are trying explode the code. For handwriting we are trying out Zaner Bloser. And of course we will have lots of read alouds and phonics little books for independent reading.

I got the e-books, “What every 2nd Grader Needs to Know” and 3rd Grade for our son who is going into 3rd. I wanted to see what I may have missed out on for the previous year. There are a lot of great resources in those books! I want to use them for music, art, and tall tales in particular. I think the history section is very informative, but insane in that kids don’t really learn all of or even close to all of what’s shown in that section. Overall, I still think it’s a great resource. It’s fun to see what other homeschool moms pick, because even though we are also doing literature-based learning, our selection compared to yours is completely different. lol
I wanted to do Math Mammoth and I couldn’t figure out how to order what I wanted. I will probably regret not figuring it out, because Abeka is tedious!

We didn’t have the “What Every...Needs to Know” books last year, and I’m so excited to be incorporating them in a casual way this year.
@@TheHomeschoolConvert I have never done a morning basket, but I’m considering incorporating the straggling information that doesn’t fit into the rest of our curriculum, in the mornings.
We’re going to use Memoria Press. I collected most of their novel and picture book recommendations over the summer (2nd hand homeschool store, Ebay, Thriftbooks when possible).
I wish I could attach a picture. lol You can check out their site if you like. We’ll be doing all of their literature-based subjects, Greek Mythology, and Latin. We are quite eclectic ourselves.

For Kindergarten next year we will be using BJU K5 Focus on Fives curriculum for all subjects for our main curriculum. Of course we will be using other resources and materials as I see fit as well.

Lol “maximalist with curriculum” There are so many different programs I like the look of so a video on how you do several at once without overwhelming or completely losing the efficacy of them would be GREAT
I can definitely share that!
As a retired specialist teacher, my feeling re cursive writing… the only time we need to know this skill is to write your name, so unless the child really wants to learn cursive and has lots of time, I would concentrate on name only.if a child had difficulty learning how to read, it may get confusing teaching them to read cursive writing as well. Love the program you have chosen fir your struggling reader by the way. 👍

We just finished up second grade with my twins. We used CLE for math. We did try math mammoth last year for about a quarter but didn’t like it personally. We started 2nd grade with The Good and the Beautiful for LA and reading(it’s combined) for part of second grade(and first) but also switched to CLE for reading and LA. We are going to be using Abeka for science, health, and history for 3rd. We did t do a ton for 2nd grade. 🙈
@ Tiffany Wheeler, I am very interested in CLE... is there year a typical 180 lessons? How teacher intensive is it and how long does it take per day?
@@elizabeth0265 it depends on the subject, child, and level. My twins are in level 3 math. The teaching part takes about 5-8 minutes. The independent takes one child 15 minutes, the other 35-45. LA level 1 teaching section takes about 15 minutes and independent about 10. Level 2 reading has about 15 min teaching and 20 minutes independent- this includes reading. Level 3 LA, my son is mostly independent and takes about 45 minutes. It’s a lot. Level 3 reading is also pretty independent and takes about 30 minutes.

I tend to follow Kennedy’s pace. If she’s flying though it and has mastery, we’ll go through a lesson quickly. If she’s something she needs more work on, we’ll spend the week on it.
At a young age, you may want to expose your children early to growth and education, i highly recommend *personalised childrens books* when doing so as it doubles as well as a gift for them and makes the books special increasing the chances of your children taking educational books up at a young age
There's also a lot of benefits to cursive with mental and thinking skill abilities being helped by it and many find it easier to write with than print, some teach it before print or at quite a young age which some schools in Britain do. ☺️👍

All About Reading would also be great if you need to slow down with Sonlight your daughter's reading challenges! I would just keep it as a resource and we love the readers so yes yes for quiet reading time!! I love language arts, too! I think less is.... less and more is more when it comes to any books at all 😅

Math Mammoth was good! It was a little too mastery based for us, but overall very effective

You are giving me ideas of what to use! I’ll have a 4th and 2nd grader! Both my girls have ADHD so I’m looking for a math curriculum that uses manipulatives because they are hands on.
I, myself, want a LA curriculum that uses living books so I’ll have to research Sonlight.

I'm using the new TGATB Math 2 this year. It comes with a few manipulatives. Great price to buy or you can even print the book for free

Homeschool convert here, too! Did you have another RUclips channel at some point? I’m pretty sure I’ve watched you before but now I’m wondering if I’m going crazy lol. All I know for next year is that we’re using math in focus, and not using the good and the beautiful language arts again. I felt like it was so jumpy and didn’t make sense lol.
Hi, Jill! Yes!! I was one of the OG mommy vloggers that started back in like 2012, haha. I was The Mommy Archives, changed to Live well, Jess when I felt I wanted to expand out of the mommy niche, and had basically abandoned RUclips for a year and a half before I found my way into the homeschooling community. I still have my other channel but am not really active on it. I keep thinking maybe I’ll just do a couple videos a month over there, but homeschooling really has my heart right now.

🍩! Yum. Now I want a donut. 😂 I will also have a second grader. We’re doing the Sonlight 2nd grade readers and HBL B for History. Explode the Code 6 which is the last book we’re going to complete and wordly wise 2. Then BJU press english 2, Mammals unit from TGATB, Geography and Reading skill sharpeners from EvanMoor, song school Spanish 1, and a sprinkling of Artist/Art study and some hymns. Fun stuff!
Sounds like a fantastic year of learning! How do you balance Sonlight’s readers program with BJU? Do you keep Sonlight more on the minimal side?
@@TheHomeschoolConvert My daughter finished All About Reading last year so she is done “learning” to read. Not to mention she loves reading. I will have her read the Sonlight readers to me and we’ll do one book per week. BJU English will be every day. We’ll start the 3rd grade booklist when we finish the others. I’m trying to help her get in to more chapter books instead. She CAN read them, but they intimidate her a little with the amount of words. 😀

Also I worked at a bank for a long time…teenagers and now college students OFTEN would hand write their “signature” on documents instead of signing it. It was wild to see.

I also have a second grader (sort of...), First Grader (sorta of...), and a 3 year old who wants to be included. We use Classical Conversations as our core curriculum. It is a Co-op. It covers our Science, history, Geography, Art, Music, and Public Speaking. For Phonics/Reading Practice my sorta Second grader will be reading from the Revised Mcguffey's First Reader and the Treadwell's Reading Through Literature First Reader. My sorta First grader will be working through "100 Easy Lessons to teach your child to read" and Revised Mcguffey's Primer. We use Copy work for handwriting. Both girls do Print and cursive. Also, we will be doing Easy Peasy Language Arts level 2 for my sorta Second grader (combined with Gentle Grammar) and E.P. Language Arts level 1 for the sorta first grader. We also use Easy Peasy Math (level 3 for the sorta Second grader and level 1 for the sorta first grader). We also read a lot as a family. I want to read aloud "Jungle Book", "Alice in wonderland", "A Bear called Paddington", "My Father's Dragon", and "Charlotte's Web" (others as well but these are my main choices).
We also read poetry together, cook together, nature walks, Art projects, etc. We rotate and loop through the above and Fridays are our loosey goosey days.
Bible is not a school subject but rather a part of our family life. We read from the Bible or a Bible storybook or a Devotional book at Breakfast. We also memorize Scripture and go through a catechism.
I’ll be sharing our read aloud choices at some point, but some of those made my list, as well! We read Charlotte’s Web last year, and my girls still talk about it. Hope you have a great school year!

My boys are 30 and 26...they did away with cursive when they were in school. My oldest had a scribble signature, like a Dr. And my youngest doesnt have a signature...he prints his name always. I'm homeschooling my granddaughter...she has dyslexia and cursive helps her write better and she loves it!!🍩

I did not, unfortunately. I had to take a pause from creating videos because of a very, very full season of life. Hope to return soon!

I’m a little confused on Explode The Code. They have half books? Like 4 and then 4 1/2? Do you just use the whole number books. I apologize if this is a silly question. This is my first year trying to homeschool! Thank you so much for your content!! 🥰
Not a silly question at all! Half books are good for reviewing concepts of you feel your child needs it before moving in but aren’t necessary for everyone.

I'm watching and thinking..does your struggling reader read to pets?.mine is a good reader but not a fan of reading..so I'm working on him reading to friends pets(we don't have any), hopefully he will find the joy. I just finished a wonderful YA and can't wait for the 2nd book in September....🍩
