    Hey everyone! Thanks for joining me as I share how we do language arts for my 5th grader in our homeschool. We have tried many different curriculums over the years, and have really found what fits our homeschool best and what suits my daughter's specific needs and learning style. I like to change things up a bit and pull from different curriculum as I believe it allows for a wider knowledge base. Our favorite LA curriculum that we are using this year includes The Good and The Beautiful, Evan Moor, Wordly Wise, Fix-It Grammar and Night Zookeeper (which is more fun, but still effective, learning rather than a formal curriculum).

    I really wish I could get my rising 5th grade boys to be more independent. They want me to do the mini lesson and then even ask me what to do, I tell them read the directions and then if your not sure ask me for help. But there is a lot of handholding to get work done. I really want to cultivate some independence in learning for them. They are both very smart and get great grades but need a lot of 1 on 1 to get there.

    I think this looks like a good fit for us! But we have still to get through level 3 and 4 lol Love how independent it is too! Thanks for sharing this Lauren!

    My 5th grade son and I do TGATB level 4 together, love it so much! We don’t get bored like other LA we have done 😊 We also skip the books and I let him read what he wants, I’m glad you mentioned that!

    I have a child that loves all things EVAN MOOR...LOL! I also love curriculum that's 30 weeks or less than 170 lessons 😀.

      @@iamkickass. No its not. Its helpful, and covers all thats needed to learn for language arts(reading, writing, grammar, etc) Every child and parent is different however

    I wish I could use the Good and the Beautiful but I have a child who hates having anything in language arts but language arts. We use alot of Evan Moor.

    We are using Level 4 of TGAB. I find we are skipping the spelling, writing, and reader sections. I can't put my finger on it but we are just not enjoying it this year. We are moving more towards a la carte method using different items. Great video for us planning next year.

      We're on LA 3 about to start LA 4 in a month, but we skip the readers and the spelling and then I'm doing WriteShop for more writing teaching...I'm finding the open and go isn't so open and go b/c I'm adding so much to it. So I'm not sure what we're doing now. I really like it but I'm trying to figure out if it's me adding in too much or if it's that we need something that's just grammar and then doing spelling and writing with other curriculums.

      @@KristyStill we are also using level 2 with my other daughter and I’m pretty sure next school year we will be switching to just specific spelling, writing, and grammar curriculums instead of adding those into TGAB. I’ve use TGAB for 4 level of LA and it’s just not fitting what we need.

    We love TGTB but are finding it’s not working with spelling!!! We are trying different methods for spelling this year!!! We are there to help with the teaching when needed due to dyslexia but we find it’s mainly to check writing and to help with reading and spelling!!! My kids cry when they struggle and won’t tell us!!! I’m hoping when my youngest gets older she’s not like my older kids as she’s not been to public school!!! We struggle with the books so we miss the questions in the book and I get a summary from my kids of the books!!! I’m my house the art from language arts is optional!!! We include vocabulary words form other subjects!!!

    Fix it didn’t work for my son. He’s a reluctant writer, so he would just sit there for way too long not doing anything or he would try to skip it or talk me into him not doing the writing part. He likes hunting/identifying the grammar, but the writing part was not his cup of tea 😂

    • @laurak6685

      Sounds exactly like my son, he despises anything that remotely resembles ‘copy work’. He would choose to do long division over copying a couple sentences lol. I tell him that if he gets all of the editing marks correct without help, then I won’t have him copy the sentence.

    • @thepracticalhomeschooler
      @thepracticalhomeschooler  Год назад

      That makes sense! I definitely focus more on the grammar portion than the copying of the sentences! Way to make it work for him!
