  • Hey there! Thanks so much for joining me as I share another comparison between Abeka and The Good & The Beautiful. Today I'm comparing level 1 of TGTB LA and Abeka 1st grade LA. Both are very great curriculum options for your homeschool, but yet they're both very different. Let's take an inside flip through and comparison between the two and perhaps you might find one will work well for you and your homeschool.

    Thank you for the comparison. I so appreciate your comparison videos. They have helped me so much. I am trying to decide between these two curriculums. I am now leaning towards Abeka. I do appreciate TG&TB provides a free download of the language arts curriculum in case we ever need something different.

    Thank you so much for all the Abeka videos you have made. I watched all the do a lesson with you, all the flip throughs, all the things you have used to make it your own. I really appreciate it. It’s what made me decide I wanted to try Abeka.

    We have used both, and honestly, I really love both programs! 😅 you said it best though, it really does come down to the individual child and how they learn.

    We are using Abeka. Thanks to your videos I decided that’s what me and my child work best with. I did download the PDF of the good and the beautiful, we use it as a fun supplement. My kid likes the parts where you make up a story, and the independent work.

    I have to comment again. We had to put the good and beautiful off to the side and restart with Abeka grade 1 and it’s awesome! First I know not all kids learn fast and I believe concepts need to be learned over and over to get them. And not to introduce something only to go over something new the next day and so on. Abeka my daughter loves because it’s straight to the point and easy! We love the program except for maybe 2 nd grade not doing cursive. That looks like a lot.

    Ugh, I have 3 kiddo’s that will be in the level 1. I’ve invested in TGATB for one and just have to purchase 2 more workbooks. However, now I think Abel would be best, especially for my struggling 3rd grader who is on a first grade level. But Abeka is soo expensive, especially with multiple kids. 🥴

    Thank you for this video. Did you ever use both the Good and the Beautiful Language Arts and the Abeka workbooks at the same time? If so, how did you combine them? Did you teach a lesson from TGTB and then find the corresponding Abeka workbook pages? I love those Abeka workbooks, but the Abeka program overall is so daunting.

    For Abeka,
    Do you have to purchase the teacher guides? Or just the student books?

    We are in the beginning of abeka first LA. I was going to skip spelling entirely to keep the worksheets down but I’m pondering the idea of ordering the workbook and having him practice the words on the all about spelling iPad app that we already have. I think that would feel fun to him

    We have used TGTB this year for my K and second graders in our first year of homeschooling. I wish there were more of the shared reading books for the second grade. We finished the two books offered before Christmas and it really advanced his reading. Do you think I could add some of the Abeka readers as a supplement? I am so unfamiliar with Abeka that all the pieces available to purchase are a bit overwhelming.

    I got the good and the beautiful language arts and to be honest it's a bit intimidating especially first time homeschooling.... I'm sort of regretting and wished I would've went with abeka it looks more fun in my opinion. I got the abeka spelling and poetry and I'm really loving that but having a hard time figuring out how to use in combination with TGTB

      I felt opposite. I started with abeka and felt so overwhelmed because of how much it was asking us to do everyday. My child felt overwhelmed too. We switched to the food and the beautiful 1/2 way through and he did much better.

    I totally forgot if in your earlier video you mentioned if you liked the older versions of TGATB LA better than the newer? We’re finishing up old level K, and bought level 1 and 2 of the old when they were on big sale. Which was your preference?

    • @thepracticalhomeschooler
      @thepracticalhomeschooler  Год назад

      I think they’re both fine. They have the same basic layout and besides the app and the way they do their phonics cards now, I don’t see a huge huge difference.

    What about the abeka teacher manual? Is that needed?
    I love the abeka readers they seem very rich.
    Seems like the program is so solid but the price difference is huge. I appreciate your comparisons
    Love the all in one TGAB we did it for my preschooler & kinder but still undecided next year-leaning towards TGAB just for the all is one aspect but I like the abeka rigor so that wins!

    • @thepracticalhomeschooler
      @thepracticalhomeschooler  Год назад

      It’s not absolutely needed like with some other curriculum but it’s highly recommended!

    How can you do an honest comparison if you do not have all of the supplies and text/books/cards for the good and the beautiful? 🤷 I've used TGTB literature and there are stores incorporated in the workbook and it will all questions about the stories from booklets in the workbook. Not sure about level 1 since I started homeschooling with grade 6.

    We did the kinder TGTB but I am liking the workbooks of Abeka.. does the TGTB 1 match up with Abeka 1 at the beginning.. like for the Booster A cards, we are wrapping them up with -ed words … just don’t want any gaps for my daughter if we switch… thanks!

    • @thepracticalhomeschooler
      @thepracticalhomeschooler  Год назад +1

      I didn’t order the booster cards since I already have the Abeka flashcards. But my daughter switched with no issues (but all kids are different and she went from Abeka to TGTB). I’d say the workbooks start off gentle for Abeka but the readers are definitely more advanced than TGTB

    Thank you for these comparison videos. I've narrowed it down to Abeka and TGATB for my K daughter next fall. My question is about pace. From what I can tell, it looks like TGATB covers the phonics concepts more slowly, over 4 levels, verses Abeka covering phonics over 3 levels. Is that correct?

    • @thepracticalhomeschooler
      @thepracticalhomeschooler  Год назад

      TGTB covers phonics over 3 levels. Although they are redoing level 3 so I’m not sure what that will look like. At this point it’s k-2 though

    Is it necessary to buy the big thick Lesson Plan for Language Arts (abeka) or are you able to easily teach it just with the workbooks and answer key?

    Do you think it is necessary to spend much time on the phonics charts and special sound cards if your child is already a proficient reader? He is going into first but is reading 2nd grade level according to his kinder teacher. Thank you for all your videos. The have helped me prepare for my first year homeschooling.

      I found that spending so much time with the charts have helped my daughter become a great speller. When we left Abeka behind, and switched to Shirley English, honestly she became less of a good speller. She’s forgotten it. We did Abeka for grade 1, and Seton for Grade 2, then Shirley English Grade 3.

    May I ask? Do I need the teacher lessons plans and book key for Abeka at this grade level? I live in Nicaragua and I have to pay shipping and that's why need to know.
