Hi! I just purchased Affinity Designer, because I got so excited by videos like yours on how to create repeat patterns. Repeat patterns on the iPad! Yay!! I especially thank you for teaching me that I can change the position or dimensions of an object by entering “+1000” or whatever. It would have taken me ages to discover that and I love the feature. I’ve been experimenting a bunch with creating repeating patterns using Symbols like you do in the video. I’ve found a slight variation and thought I’d share it, in case you find it useful.
After creating a symbol from a rectangle that fills my small art board, and propagating it on the larger one, I add a motif to the master symbol on the small art board, and then hide the original rectangle. This way if I slide my motif part way off the edge of the small art board, it still shows up in the repeated pattern on the large art board. No need to duplicate and align the motif! When I want to export a single perfect tile, I go into the export persona and create a slice in the middle of the large art board, exactly the size of the small art board.
Using this method, the edges of the larger art board won’t look quite right, so if you want you can make that art board smaller than the array of symbols filling it. And if you want to play with the solid background of the pattern you can place one on the large artboard.
    Give it a try!
Thanks so much for your great videos!

I love this tutorial. However when I try to line up my squares, I don't know how to make them exact in the artboard 2 and I couldn't see how you were doing it. I have gaps in between my squares. Any video to explain how to do this for newbie Affinity designers on the iPad?

Can I ask you how you stop the squares moving around in Artboard #2?

Thank you for the tutorial! in your artboard 2, do the white lines disappear when you export your patterns?

If they're align really well the white lines won't appear. If you want to export it try using a bitmap after you know that pattern is working.

    I have seen different dimensions for papers. Which is best? 1000pt x 1000pt? 3600 x 3600? 12in x 12in?

Thank you for showing how to do it. I'm wondering how do I export just artboard 2 PNG? I keep getting artboard 1 and 2 combined on a single png file :(.

When you go to export, there's a drop-down menu for area and you can select individual artboards in there.

How did you align the symbols on the large art Board? Thanks!

If you have snapping turned on it will align the symbols next to each other.

Lindsey, is there a way to make multiples artboards then change just certain ones. Like making digital papers but each having a different color background? I tried adding another artboard with the background symbols pieces, then locking that artboard, but it continued to change colors while the additional artboard didn't. Thanks for doing this video.

If you want to change just the background colors and keep the motifs the same - I would recommend making the original symbol square/rectangle with no fill and no stroke. After that you can add a layer behind everything on each artboard and change the colors. You can also setup multiple artboards with symbols, so that you can do different patterns for a collection or digital papers.
