I know it sounds hack but the 70a was truly the most creative era of music because it brought so many elements together in that era. By that I mean, these artists were the products of people that lived through war and then it all exploded from Elvis onward and by the time the 70s were nearing their end...the artists were so experienced in both life and talent, that music reached an incredible crescendo. Punk signalled the next era and things changed but it was a fantastic point in time.

Yes indeed, an interesting and astute observation, although I also hear Muddy Waters and John Lee Hooker ('I'm a man') undertones. Certainly a memorable performance for many, many reasons...
Seriously? The Howlin' Wolf vibe was in this song right from when Bowie wrote it. He said he'd ripped off Howlin' for the riff and Lou Reed for the vocal style.
The riff was also used in a song by The Sweet called Blockbuster which was released around the same time as The Jean Genie.

@@CB-xr1eg Yes indeed, have to agree about the 'vibe'. There's an interview with Mick Ronson somewhere on RUclips from the Hammersmith Odeon before he passed (late 90's, maybe) where he referenced Muddy Waters' 'I'm a man' as the influence, at least for the guitar riff. With due respect to any of the Blues' legends, it can get hard to make the distinction, sometimes, with that sound phrasing, unless you're a real knowledgeable fan of the genre (I, myself, am not), and there are a lot of variations and versions (Bo Diddley), and different titles (Willie Dixon's ' Hoochie Coochie Man comes to mind) recorded. Have to think both Bowie and Ronson were keenly aware of, and influenced by the Yardbirds, who recorded 'I'm a man', and especially Beck, before they themselves 'hit it big', a few years later. Maybe the Jean Genie riff was just them attempting to channel an old song through the filter of Ziggy Stardust, and Ronson's Custom and Marshall Major. Maybe just another example of "everything old is new again". Or 'ripped off', depending on how you look at it. I suppose Bowie and Ronson's appeal struck a different audience, as maybe with The Sweet, yet I think it's still evidence of how much American Blues and R&B may have affected the next generation in the U.K., consciously or otherwise. Certainly an iconic groove, and not one soon forgotten, whether by Muddy Waters, Bo Diddley, The Beatles, Yardbirds or Bowie, methinks. The ongoing 'argument' in this house is who's take on it is 'the best'. Depends which generation you ask, I suppose, although there's no argument about whose make up and costumes get the highest marks, for better or worse... Hope the next generations don't lose sight of the relative historical and musical value of any or all of it...Thanks for the interesting comments.

I was at this concert - it was the one where Bowie famously retired Ziggy and the Spiders - it was amazing - I was third row back in the circle with my girlfriend - Lulu sat just behind and Tony Curtis just a few seats away - Angie Bowie did a dance routine for some of the numbers right at the front of the circle - I never went to another Bowie concert because I always wanted to remember him at this one - still bought all of his records though - Beck was stunning - better than he sounds on this recording

@@HappyKat-wc4ld it was an added concert at the end of his tour - also saw him at Earls Court which was where the original show was in the same year - the tickets for Hammersmith were all sold at the venue and we queued from five in the morning on the day they went on sale to get good tickets but even then there were hundreds of people in front of us but I think everyone must have bought stalls tickets because our tickets were just amazing in the circle - fantastic night - great memories

I've seen clips from this show but had no idea Jeff Beck made an appearance. He seemed to be having a great time.

Bowie was never this muscular on stage again, but that was the genius of the man - he left the eras on a high - Scary Monsters to wrap up the '70s, and BlackStar to wrap up everything.

Simply amazing. Bowie with his best persona for me. And givng us a bonus including a bit of Love me Do by The Beatles. The duel between Beck and Ronson is sheer perfection.

ABSOLUTE pure talent from everyone on that stage that night. The cream rises to the top and this is a perfect example of that. So sad that Jeff Beck was lost so quickly to a quirky ailment. I never had any of the basic childhood sicknesses like mumps or measles or chickenpox but I got bacterial meningitis at five years old and lost significant hearing but survived. To lose Jeff to that just sucks. RIP Jeff you are and always will be one the the best. You will be remembered 100 years from now right up there with all the rest of the best.

Beck n Ronson sounded in phase with eachother at the end, that was absolutely incredible! What a performance all round. I was around minus 5 at the time. What a time not to be born.
For us who have been around for awhile we saw the finest music EVER made during the 60's, 70's, 80's and 90's, at the height of music, much of it influenced greatly by the masters of the blues scene. No one can match it today, even though I try to stay current and I continue to search for high quality performers in todays world.
The only thing they can do is erase our memory with their own sounds. More power to them if it makes the world a better place to live! It's like a bunch of music gods came down all at once, changed the world back then through their art and are now leaving to go fight other battles in other worlds to make beauty in life's condition. Bowie, Beck and the many others are those spirits and now David Crosby who just left a few days ago.
It's been an absolute pleasure to be alive at the same time with these folks, to actually have seen some of them perform, to have met some of them has been my greatest joy in this life. A life well lived is my poetry. I hope the new generations can find the same joy and purpose. Keep on fk'n rock'n people and carry it well, carry on! Never forget!

Priceless! Legendary Jeff Beck Probably accomplished More Music on Guitar the last 55 years than any other Artist! He helped pioneer or amplify important technical innovations on his instrument. He elaborated the use of distortion and feedback effects, He went from Blues to Rock to Jazz to Electronic Swing & back too Rock
He didn’t reinvent himself the way Beck did but Van Halen was the last guitar player to change the game.
Gave us the “Brown Sound” plus popularized tapping and hot rodding guitars. Before he came along, the idea of things like putting a humbucker in a Strat didn’t exist.
Influenced generations of players and owned the rock scene from late 70’s till mid/late 80’s

i am 72 years old now...never saw bowie in person but i have followed him my whole life....took me a while to appreciate him with tin machine during the 70s....and now to see him with beck in 73!!!....this brings out the essence of both of them....this is the best beck play along with i have seen....the energy of this has me twitching.....two great human beings....

The reasons why we won't see it's like again are many. Enough for several books, at least.
Put briefly, it was a _transistorized_ culture - free from the constraints of vacuum tubes, and before all the computers got in the way. It was also immediately following *the psychedelic era* - which (thanks to perpetual nostalgia) can't possibly be A NEW THING ever again. No chance whatsoever, thanks to The Internet being (in some aspects) even weirder than the 1960s ever were, but also utterly mundane.

Just a few days before the passing of Jeff, I was talking to my brother about how fortunate we are to STILL have the Clapton, Page, Beck trifecta going and after all of these years too!! These three giants have held the INFLUENCE title for decades.. Pretty much, you can check out any rock guitarists interview going as far back as 1971 and you will definitely find the “Clapton, Page, Beck” trifecta as major influences!! Rest easy Mr Beck, Mr Bowie, Ronson too. ❤️🙏. ( Sorry for my grammar and wording, I’m sure it’s all over the place on here. )

Jeff lived a pretty clean lifestyle compared to the other ‘birds. In fact by rock god standards, he was a Boy Scout. Wouldn’t have figured him the first to go.

About the time I saw Bowie, though not with Jeff. I saw Jeff with his band and again with Rod Stewart. When I tell my soon~to~be 21 yr. cousin of all the Rock Stars a saw, and many only 20 feet from the stage, they are amazed, naturally.

Fucking amazing! Beck, Bowie and Ronson. How this never made it into the final edit of the official film is beyond me. The only thing I can think of is possible copyright issues when Bowie performs a segment of 'Love Me Do' by the Beatles. This was filmed 2 weeks after I saw him at Coventry Theatre, England - I was 14 at the time and already had been a Bowie freak for 2 years prior.

@@ziggsstar He did, and it's noted in Carson's "Crazy Fingers" on p123. Whatever he decided, Beck was still featured on the initial U.S. broadcast of this concert in October 1974, as I definitely remember seeing it on tv and being totally knocked out.

I'm 79, and this is the first time I have seen or heard this song and performance. Mainly because I was not a David Bowie or Jeff Beck fan, until I discovered them on RUclips a few years ago. Now I know what my nephews and son were raving about!

@@frankyrubful - Nobody in particular - I watched whoever was on The Midnight Special, but I have always been more of a country fan - also watched Hee Haw every week! I was drinking heavily thru the first half of the 70's, and sometimes those years are a little fuzzy.
I saw DB live in Zagreb in 1990-91, one of the best concerts I've experienced
