  • Since I have my new drill press, the old one was standing unused in my workshop. So I decided to make a small wooden lathe out of it. The main parts i used to make this wooden lathe were the motor, the pulleys, the bearings, the belt and the power switch.
In this video I make the Tailstock.

I never would have thought to make a tool case from wood, but the way you do it gives me many ideas for tools I previously thought were too expensive to get. I may try using an old fan motor I have lying around to make my own lathe, thank you for the inspiration!

Great build! Thanks for sharing. I would suggest a hexagonal one-piece ring on the front of the external tube so that strengthens the tube and preventing it from splitting apart from the stress applied from the locking nut.

I was very curious about the tailstock, being it the most difficult to build and, more importantly, to align and keep aligned in all operating positions. Your solution seems to tackle all these properly, with enough stiffness for normal turning (yet, it will probably not hold alignment very well, under turning pressure, with tailstock extended - wood is simply not stiff enough - but if you use it retracted, it will handle greater radial pressure).
So, great work!! Now let's see it working :-)

Really good video, enjoyed the series. Can you tell me why you put the tail stock stand that way around, if you put the tail stock stand sloping away from the headstock it would not interfere with any large wood turning piece as it would be sloping away from insted of into the work piece. This is in no way a criticism just an observation, great work though

I watched to the end. I've watched all your vids to the end
    Particularly this Lathe series
You have great presentation and demonstrative skills
I felt involved in the making of this tailstock :)
As for the tailstock, I'm a little leery of it due to it's made of plywood & and the major components are held together with glue & dowels :) I'm intrigued by it's design & genuinely curious how it will holdup under use & especially prolonged use. A lot of pressure and forces can be had back there of the tailstock.
As for your design, I like it but the duel handles holding it to the bed might get cumbersome after a while of usage.
I think I understand why it's designed like that but still, dealing with 2 handles every time it's positioned could quickly become a P.i.t.A.. (Is my thought)
I'm not too thrilled that the handles are positioned in the corners, either. But I get it
Overall, you're doing a great job
Thanx for sharing it with us

You obviously aren't too familiar with woodworking by the sound of it?!?! Are you more of a metal worker? Have you only worked with metal really?!?! If I'm mistaken, please tell me what you would do differently with what has been done that you commented on, you know, the things that you are a little leery on???!!!??? And what design changes would you do in your professional opinion?!?!??? I'm genuinely curious about what you would do differently, please elaborate extensively...
Looking forward to your response :)
