    The small benchtop Wen lathe is doing ruclips.net/user/postUgkxKGVtPhqZBB5AQXXFlU2kdd4mQhO6wlhl just what it was desighed to do, turn small pieces. This product is workig very well in wood and plastics, I wouldn't recommend any metal turning on it though. Overall from an old tool guy, I highly recommend this lathe as long as you realize that this is for small turning only. I bought this a few weeks ago and have noticed the price has gone from $174. to $249. Might want to get one sooner than later.

    I built a wood lathe using a washing machine motor, mine does not look anywhere near as good!
    A couple of problems I have found since then, a washing machine motor is not really strong enough for bowels, I can stop mine easily with a gouge. and the threaded bar (allthread) is too soft, the bearings wear it out really quickly, I've changed mine 3 or 4 times already. but I haven't found an easy replacement.
    That said it does work really well
    i really like your solution for the sliding tail stock and the live centre on it , I'll be copying those ideas, thanks.
    Excellent work!

    • @CraftyDude
      @CraftyDude  2 года назад +1

      Did you use speed controller?

    • @edharding9363
      @edharding9363 2 года назад

      yes, the lathe was originally powered by a bench grinder using different size wheels to change the speed, the washing machine motor and speed controller work much better. I also used the original large pulley from the washing machine for more torque.
      the motor I have wont turn backwards unless you swap the brushes, I was thinking of adding a dc power source to to the dc windings to do this.

    Awesome build, best I've ever seen. Can I ask the difference between having the motor as direct drive as opposed to how you have it with a belt drive? Why the belt? Thank you in advance

    • @CraftyDude
      @CraftyDude  Год назад +3

      This motor has very high rpm, with belt and pulleys I slow down rpm and get better torque. If you connect washing machine motor direct to socket it will spin in about 10000-15000rpm. and its danger speed for lathe.
