    It works well, looks very practical, and does what has been intended for hobbyists, however besides some minor modifications on the chuck, the railing, and perhaps a safety shield in front of the workstation are doing an awesome job.

    How you connected it to the electricity

  • @AtticusDraco
    @AtticusDraco 3 года назад +8

    Yeah,
    I'd be a bit leery of using that as a direct-drive unit
    Not too keen on nuts & bolts, with shards of angle iron, being flung at me at17K rpm
    (I'm guessing the rpm)
    You could add some nail spikes around the perimeter of that faceplate to increase it's aesthetic appeal, I guess

    • @peter2uat
      @peter2uat 3 года назад

      These motors from washing machines usually run at 1200 to 2300rpm. Wooden chucks if made from birch plywood and angle iron are a good and safe method. Particle board is never a good idea, even when it is covered with melamine. The only structural problem I see is in the tailstock - a triangle is needed to stiffen up the construction.

      Most probably this motor works at 1300-1400 RPM as they are 4-pole design. Nothing to worry about.

    Liked the clip. A little long. The chuck might be put on a hand drill. There are a lot of other clips about how to use a hand drill to make a lathe. So the newer chuck might be an upgrade?

  • @UserName_no1
    @UserName_no1 2 года назад

    Might be good for smaller objects like the dowel for an upright paper towel holder (or actual dowels). But your not going to be turning out any bowls of significant size (pun intended). On that point it leaves a lot to be desired. But then again so do model rockets, RC aircraft/boats/cars, and drones.😏

    Excelende idea. Pero... yo pondria un disco de hierro de 1/4" de espesor para que los puntos de sujecion de la madera sean mas seguros y en el pedestal donde se apoya el portacuchillas y la de contrapunta le pondria un diagonal para que no se regrese al dar presiòn tanto al trabajar como de sujetar la pieza a tornear. Dios le bendia siempre.

    Great video. But it seems a bit unsafe. Wood used for tools of this sort can go 'crack', and hit you in the face. A lathe should have metal and steel components only.

    At 15.20. You are starting the Motor with your hands. So obviously you haven`t got a capacitor connected,which also means that the secondary winding is not connected.

    • @Dave_en
      @Dave_en 3 года назад

      Very nice point made. The winding can be done carefully so that it can be self start and also if more copper is filled into the slots, then it can be made into heavy duty motor.
      If I were to design this motor, I would make it in chain winding configuration which can even save more energy and almost never heats up on long duration of operation.

    Great idea , BUT I was cringing when you put your hand next those brackets as they are spinning to sand that piece. Ok it would have been soooo much faster and safer to drill and tap the end of the motor shaft and use a short piece of threaded rod sharpened to a point with a t-nut with lock nut to hold the t-nut in place , AND you would have been done before you got the 3 holes drilled in the pulley. Not to mention no time for wood circle or brackets. Look I give you this ( you got it done ) but you went the longest way around to make something that not safe. One of those brackets hits you and your going to the emergency room.
    Next time drill motor shaft and tap,
    Then use threaded rod say 3 in will do.
    Sharpen point add 2 nuts and a t- nut
    The 1st but looks it to the shaft,
    The 2nd nut is a lock for the t- nut .
    The point on the threaded rod keeps center and t - nut spins your work . Simple and takes less room than the pulley that you could have gotten rid of anyway.
