DIY Fix for Non-Opening Hyundai Door Latch (2015-2021)

  • Today I am going to show you how to fix a 2016-2021 Hyundai Tuscon door locking issue where when you click the unlock button on the key the door doesn't actually unlock. This will be by replacing the door locking actuator. The dealer would charge you over $1000 to do this repair so hopefully this will save some of you money! This is a common problem for these tucson where the cables that lock and unlock the door get stretched out and need replaced. This leaves people having to click the unlock button multiple times or not being able to open the door form the outside.
This DIY does not take a lot of tools. You only need a panel popper tool which you can find at any hardware store or harbor freight for under $10. The rest is just a phillips screw driver and a socket set or impact if you have one. and finally a T30 Torx bit which can be found at most hardware and automotive stores.
The part you need to order is Hyundai Part#81310 D3010 which is the latch assembly. they are door specific so if you are changing this on another door you will need to order a different part number.
The First step is to remove the door panel which is fairly easy by popping the clips out and removing a couple philips screws.
The nest portion is disconnecting all electrical plugs that attach the door panel to the door.(roll window down first)
second you will need to remove a few plugs to gain access to the bolts that hold in the window. You will have to roll the window to make the bolts align with the holes you removed the plugs from.
next you will want to remove the black cover inside of the door that has screws all around the perimeter. once you do this you will be able to access the actual locking mechanism.

Good job, Floyd! Hyundai finally issued an 'extended warranty' (not a recall) on these door cables. My left rear door cable was warranted by dealer. Now BOTH my front doors will not open/unlock on first attempts. Bring your Hyundai to the dealer and they will fix if for FREE! Extended Warranty Ref: TXXL. Give them your VIN.

There is a warranty extension for this problem that was issued recently. My son bought a 2017 Elantra and received the notice a month or two ago. Check it out to see if your vehicle is covered, before spending your own money. This morning all four of his doors would not open from the outside. Had to crawl through the trunk. Fun!

You take it in for them to verify the issue and record a video, then they'll order the parts and schedule the replacement for free. They will only replace the door latches that are currently affected

There is an extra wire behind the door panel, probably for the illuminated door handles, which made it more difficult to take apart. Ugga Dugga is the unit of measure. For example that bolt needs 3 ugga duggas, while say another bolt requiring more tightening may for example need 12 ugga duggas.

Thanks so much for this video! I was stuck on how to get the inner door panel out, never thinking I'd have to pull the glass to do so. All told, it took me about an hour to do the driver door (not counting the lost time where I tried to do it myself before watching your video). Besides the glass, the technique that saved my bacon was when I saw you have to put a little leverage on the lock cylinder retention bolt to get it to back out far enough. I won't admit how long I fought that the first time around. Putting that little bit of leverage on it got the bolt to back out far enough and the cylinder slid right out.
    Thank you again!

Fantastic video, helped me change my door lock easily. A word of warning, if you have a RHD ( UK, Japan etc) car and need a driver's door actuator the cheap aftermarket parts are for LHD cars and won't accept the spindle that comes out the back of the key barrel.

Great video and thank you. I purchased a new door handle after being advised it was the door handle. After comparing the new and old handle, the old one did not show any signs of any plastic breaking. As a test, I removed the old handle and replaced it with the new one and the door still would not open (only would open from the interior handle) so I looked inside (from exterior of the door) and saw a cable with a ball on the end. After hearing this problem may be stretched cable, I am now trying to figure out some way to fix the stretched cable as I really prefer not to purchase a new assemble for only a stretched cable. It would be awesome to see a video on that. Thanks for taking your time to video all the dissasembly and assembly of the door and all.

Hyundai extended the warranty on the door latches to 10 years/unlimited miles. Dealerships should cover this for no cost. Brilliant video - well done. But can't understand that if actual problem is a stretched cable as seems to be the general consensus, how does it shorten again with repeated handle pulling and the door then open?

  • @ronsullivan132
    @ronsullivan132 2 года назад +1

So thinking back to a lawn mower throttle cable, or motorcycle, lengthen the outer sheath effetely shortens the inner cable. So is there any way to add a 0.015 spacer, or whatever is needed to the outside sheath? My daughter's 2016 Tucson developed the same issue on two doors at the same time. I am thinking it is temp related (cable stretch), or the outside sheath is compressing as it has been HOT this last month.

I'm wondering if it might be easier and cheaper to put an extra cable clamp,(tiny one), on the ends of the door latch cable and the door lock cables. If it is the cable getting stretched then it's simply a matter of tightening it up and there's probably nothing wrong with the door lock assembly itself. My wife's 2018 Tucson's back doors are both getting stuck closed. The door is clearly unlocked. It just won't open. I saw a guy on another video stick a screwdriver behind the door latch inside and push the cable to get the door open. This is a bad idea because it could damage the cable strands. If you must do this id advise using a blunt object. There's always silly fixes out there that don't make sense. Research problems carefully before trying to fix things. If you don't you usually end up costing yourself even more money fixing it. Still, I believe there's a better, cheaper, satisfactory fix for both the locking mechanism and the door latch problem and that is to simply stretch the cable with vice grips, (pulling the cable clamp itself, not the cable), and instal a new small cable clamp further up the cable, toward the door latch handle or the pull points of both the door lock and the door handle. This is what us poor guys do instead of spending hundreds of dollars replacing the whole assembly, possibly, eventually on all four doors. I know this is standard practice for repair shops but imagine the customers joy when you hand them the bill, having charged them a few cents for cable clamps and a little bit for labor. Good luck!
