As an Aussie, I also found EARMUFFS were a must, as my ears ached from the freezing temperatures. Also boots that had a NON SLIP TREAD to deal with the snow on New York footpaths.❄️🌫️☃️🌬️

You also need to consider when you're in New York that you're probably going to go in and out of a lot of warm overcrowded stores. I recommend layers that you can easily take off while in stores so you're not dying when trying to shop.

My husband and I went to NY in December and your videos helped a lot with the planning, thank you! We met a lady from Florida who didn't own a coat. She was walking around with a giant scarf. Coming from a cold place myself, it was just unimaginable to me how you can't own a coat! Anyway, she used the next day to get one. Nice souvenir from NY :-D

My first time in NY was mid October and although it was not freezing yet, it was much colder than back at home (I lived in south Texas-like weather), so I had to buy a coat cause I hadn't pack one. It was a nice souvenir indeed, and it lasted like 10 years.
The worst thing here is that it was a school trip, and the teachers organizing had no idea what the weather would be like (mind you, this was long before videos like this were popular).

I think the other thing that happens at NYC in the winter - not a lot of sun. Its either cloudy or sun is low in the sky and buildings create longer shadows. 40F in NYC feels so much colder than 40F back at home. But my home has sunny winters (in between storms) and I think that makes a difference.

Mid November 2004, I was on the open top of a tour bus in NYC at night. It was raining on and off, practically sleeting. I was the only one up there enjoying the solitude and views. Stayed up till near the end of the trip where it started to rain quite heavily and I realised being sat there, my finger tips and toes were starting to get cold. Even with the thick socks and gloves on. So I came down to the lower deck where it was warm. So I waited till the bus was stuck in traffic on 5th Ave going south with Central Park on my right. Got to the bottom of the stairs and the whole bus began to clap and applaud. This was quite confusing to me so I glanced at the driver who said that he had been joking with the other passengers about how long I would brave being up there and no one expected me to last as long as I had.

Can anyone please tell me the brand of her hat? I want the exact one. The hat she linked in her blog is a Furtalk brand. I don’t think this furtalk. Thank you

    Hey Sarah!
Love your videos! Been watching for like a year in the lead up to mine and my wife’s one year anniversary trip to New York!
We leave in a few days and coming from sweltering hot North Queensland Aus we are definitely freaking out for the cold weather (it’s been 45 Celsius here for months 🥵)
I have bought thermals, warm, waterproof down coats, socks etc as mentioned in video but I was just wondering if you think it is completely useless to bring the thinner fashion coat you talked about?
We are professional musicians and will be seeing a lot of shows for winter jazz, other concerts, broadways shows etc as well as a few fine dining spots. I thought to wear the thinner, nicer coats for those events rather than the bulky down coat because it looks classier I guess? Is this common or should I not waste the suitcase space?
    Would love your opinion!

Thanks for watching! Most of the venues you're speaking of would have a coat check so what type of coat you bring doesn't make a huge difference regarding where you go. However, my advice is to check the temperature before hand. If it is above 5°C at night then you'll be fine using the lighter jacket. I hope that helps!

I have a few pairs of winter boots one size too big for me so I can wear the ultra-thick socks with them.

I think they are cute but don't get the ones with heels if you plan on walking around the city a lot! Your feet will hate you!

... And if you came unprepared, don't worry, NYC has plenty of shopping 😂 I would say head to Uniqlo not to break a bank and their winter coats/jackets are phenomenal for all genders and ages...
