Finally!! Someone who truly understands what it is like to live in cold weather. I laugh at some of the bloggers and RUclipsrs who live in places like California, Texas, or London when they style "winter" outfits. When you have to walk your dog in sub-zero temperatures a wool coat and Hunter boots won't cut it. My favorite base layer is Uniqulo Heattech...they also have good packable puffer coats. I splurged on a coat by Herno...and I am very pleased with the warmth and style. You can also find terrific warm weather gear at REI and Patagonia. Great job, Erin and have a wonderful weekend! Stay Warm (LOL).

Nancy Harris I had to buy sweaters for my dogs because it's so cold here. They can be pretty expensive and my dogs are fairly large. Do you have any suggestions for a good brand for my XX-Large sized dogs? Thanks!

@@tammieparrishmiller3669 I have a smaller dog (14 lbs) and I've purchased Chilly Dog and Canada Pooch brands. Both keep my pup warm. Plus I use Pawz dog boots to protect the paws. Hope that helps!

Tammie, I have a small dog and he has gotten 6 hard-wearing winters from a 2 piece RC Pets system: a fleece vest w/a removable wind/water resistant shell. He wears the fleece on its own to keep him warm right after a haircut; the shell on its own when it’s raining or windy, but not too cold; and both together in very cold, snowy conditions. Wasn’t the cheapest choice, but has held up through many washings, and probably the most economical, given durability and versatility..

@@altitudeiseverything3163 This is something I would definitely be interested in. I love the idea of the wind/water resistant shell! I was thinking I might actually end up making their coats if I couldn't find what I was looking for. It's hard because my furbabies are both XX-large and ordering online is kind of iffy. I really appreciate this information and I wish you a Merry Christmas!

I also live at high altitude in Colorado. A couple of additional tips: 1. If you’re going out in actual snow, choose an alternative to jeans, which can get damp and take forever to dry (making you cold!). I substitute either black skinny jeans with a high synthetic content, or simple, black poly fleece tights/leggings that are smooth (and shed snow) on the outside. Athleta always has several great options. 2. Likewise, if there’s snow in the forecast, leave the wool coat at home, because it’ll get wet and you’ll smell like a damp sheep! 3. On moderately cold days, silk base layers are very thin (great under business or dressier outfits), feel luxurious, and move more easily under your clothing. 4. My favorite base layer for bitterly cold weather - as well as for snowshoeing & Nordic skiing - is merino wool. Merino won’t make you feel sweaty, keeps you warm even when damp, is durable, and stays fresh-smelling through highly aerobic activities. Smartwool and Icebreaker are both great brands. 5. If going out in a “dash to the car” outfit, make sure you have a heavy parka & snow boots in the trunk, in case of emergency on the road. Invest in the right gear and it will literally change your life. Get out there and enjoy winter! Btw... this is by far the best video on winter dressing; great job!

Omg yes no no no jeans if ur going to be having fun in the snow lol unless u want to either freeze to dead or don’t feel ur limbs 😂... merino wool the best!! That’s what I use when going skying even if I use a shell it gives me enough warmth to stay out in the snow! Lastly a good pare of goretex gloves is a must if going to any winter activities ur normal cute gloves won’t cut it out...

It's so nice to hear someone talk sensibly about dressing for cold weather. The other thing to note about rain boots is that they lose traction below freezing so you potentially risk getting injured if you wear them in extreme cold. My favourite base layer is Ice Breaker. They have a variety of weights and they do ski socks as well as tops and bottoms.

***MY TIP*** My mom always told me to tuck in the base layer to keep your back warm. I live in the Philadelphia area, which can get pretty cold in the winter, especially when standing on a train platform at 8:00 am or just walking around the city at night.

    • @chocmilkshake24
      @chocmilkshake24 4 года назад +5

Gail Leone YES! Tucking in keeps heat sealed in. I also find that applying thick lotion onto your body also helps keep that heat sealed in.

  • @NNaadah

Great video for "real cold". I live in western NY; and yeah, we get cold and we get snow!
Couple of things I would add:
    1. Sports wear stores call them "glove liners" or "mitten liners". They are basically a "base layer for your hands" and work great for things that are difficult to do with mittens on; like punching in numbers on a gas pump in ridiculously cold weather. They provide enough coverage to protect your hands; but are thin enough to put mittens over. These also are great for when you're walking outside and you start to get warm; but it's still too cold to take your mittens off.
    2. Down mittens! Down mittens are a life saver for me. I walk on crutches and I can't just stick my hands in my pockets and walk. Any circumstance where your hands have to be occupied (like dog leash, walking poles, ski poles, crutches) Down mittens and trapper hats! Trapper hats! Yes! I'm "all about" trapper hats. They are the warmest winter hats I have ever found. Especially one's with fur in them.
    3. Pack winter hiking gear in your car! THIS IS A MUST. Especially if you are driving, it starts to snow; you go off the road. You could be there for hours; waiting for a tow truck; and you may not be able to run your engine. We all "throw on a couple of layers" and do the "door dash" from the car. This usually works fine until something happens. If you go off the road though; you may have to hike through some snow to get help. Be prepared. I put cleated snow boots; snow pants, winter coat, extra hat and gloves in a "carry on" bag in my car. I have one for me and one for my son. Besides your normal "road hazard assistance" gear; pack a "winter storm bug out of the car bag" for every household member; to store in the car during cold weather. Throw snack bars in it too. That bag might save your life.

Beloved Erin. Thanks to you, I now look forward to winter. I love getting dressed up these days thanks to all your fashion ideas and inspiration. This video really did inspire me to invest in some ''heavy-duty'' puffers and how to layer up. From my coat/s to hats to scarves... everything I wear these days are things that make me feel good about myself (and also keep me warm) thanks to all your videos. I wish everyone can watch them. I have watched your videos so many times and recommended them so others can also learn how to dress appropriately for not only the cold weather, but in general for their body type/shape etc.
You're a star Erin. Much love from the UK.

Erin! My girl, always killin it! You are sooooo right!!! A Pennsylvania girl here and between wind chill factor, frigid temps and high humidity...wheeeeeeew, sweet baby HAYSOOOOOS! It ISSSS COLD! People don't realize that humidity can really kill you in the cold, especially the lungs, for those of us with chronic lung disease. That snood/infinity scarf covering the face is super important. Love all these looks and you just proved that one doesn't have to look like a dork in freezing temps! MUUUUAH! 😘👏😍 Thank you!

Most of us would look like the Michelin tire man layering a puffer coat under a wool coat. Thankfully, due to menopause I'm warm with just a cashmere sweater under a light wool or puffer coat , sans scarf . I live in northeast Ohio so I do know cold!

Very tru with the Michelin😂😂😂😂I was thinking it too. I need one jacket that will keep me toasty.
      What it needs:
      Hood with fur
Sleeves with this extra sleeves in them
Not shiny, I want to hide😂
      Super warm
      Long to my knees
      Cute
      Below $120.
Tada 😂😂😂I have been looking for the last two years because my coat is getting tired even though I still loved it.
I have Free Country powered down. Although they don't make them like I have it anymore, otherwise I would just purchase another one like I have😞

That's exactly how we dress in Poland 🤗 I could say we Mastered it 😆
Sometimes. ..I put thin and short Down jacket ( comes in handy little bag ) on the top of thin Jumper( in your case cashmere )....but underneath the Puffer Jacket...
As you mentioned. ..the key is layering 🤗
Also I Always make sure when am choosing a coat or jacket if Sleeves have thight Cuffs around hands. It does simply stop the Draft😜
Where did you go for your recent trip to Poland, Hun?

Good ideas! I've been doing serious puffer with blanket scarf or open with fur vest underneath. I still like tall Hunters in winter for slushy puddly days or after a foot of snow fall because it keeps snow from soaking your pants or falling into the top of your boot. 2 pair good socks makes it work.

Actually it is the same almost. You have a layer (as many as you want) which is suitable to wear under the shirt, if you wear that (I don't know what is you regular outfit). Than comes the shirt. Than the jumper. You should fold out the collar onto the sweater. You can tuck the shirt in, it is hanging' on the style of the shirt and the pullover. If the shirt and the sweather is like oversized, than leave it like that, and if it is more bodyshape follower, than it is better to tuck in.

Yay! It gets cold here in northern Finland! Some wear winter over-trousers (like a windbreaker) over the jeans to stay dry. My puffer is super long and covers my knees. Whether that is fashionable or not, I wouldn’t give it up! Favorite boots are suede, lace up with leather thong, and never forgetting the knitted leg warmers.

Thank you for providing one of these style guide options for *real* cold severe winter weather. Last winter I went hunting for advice and all I could find were ones that were clearly designed by people who've only lived in temperate climates and just made me feel worse. Between NYC and Toronto now where I am constantly out in the cold as a pedestrian and transit user, I need actual severe cold weather options that don't make me choose between feeling like a schlump or freezing solid.

I love my huge Lands End parka. The greatest thing is that it is second hand and I've had it for 3 years and it's still in amazing condition. I had no idea that you're from Watertown!! I have family there. You definitely know what a real winter is. I live halfway between Syracuse and Oswego. We get belted with cold and snow, but that Tug Hill region is no joke. Thank you for making this, someone who understands what cold really is and how you have to dress. Below is what I used to stay warm when I lived in Fairbaks, AK. The L.L. Bean Baxter State Parka is great and can be worn to temps of -45°F! It comes in petite.
I also love flannel lined jeans. My boots are by Khombu, which work with U.S. ski team. My winter cold rated sneakers with traction are by North Face. If you get get your hands on alpaca they make insoles, hats, blankets - just watch the blend, not too much polyester, or you lose the warmth factor. Patagonia makes a popular packable puffer.
