Hi from Canada and loving these tips! May I add a few? Glad you like our Sorel boots, sporty and super warm with a good grip. Also worth checking out is La Canadienne boots for a more urban vibe. In really cold weather, I would NEVER wear a base layer of cotton (retains moisture, which then freezes) or those pleather leggings, which are essentially made of plastic. Put only merino wool or silk next to your skin. You can get tissue weight merino wool underthings at ski shops. Merino wool socks are also the best, as the fabric wicks away moisture and is super comfortable. A down-filled puffer vest is a better layering piece than a jacket with sleeves. You want a wicking layer, an insulating layer and an outer shell layer. Then bring on the cold, Baby! It's all cool. Love your channel, beautiful Erin!

I don't know what I am doing wrong, but I tend to feel cooler in silk base layers and I tend to run cool anyway.

Appreciate the timely advice. Living near Buffalo, keeping warm for 6 months of the year is part of life. Perhaps you could do another video with affordable alternatives. $150 for a pair of gloves?!! Most of us do not have the resources to indulge in your suggestions. Just a thought from upstate NY.

    • @Ozziecatsmom

You're right, I usually lose a glove or two every winter so I buy cheap ones. Cashmere sweaters and boots that are around $250 out of my range. Actually the boots she shows are 328.62 Canadian, way too much for me!

I agree that some of these options are pretty pricey. I actually mentioned a couple cheaper suggestions up above. Still a bit pricey but much less than the $850 for the linked puffer coat. Macy’s has some for cheaper. Different brands. Costco has some great shorter puffer coats for $25. Target also. The gap may also periodically. There are various places for warm comfy nice boots. Try shoe stores like DSW or famous footwear. Also try googling these on the internet. You never know where a great deal will be. Can’t depend on only what’s linked. I hope this helps.

For gloves, hats, scarfs and sweaters in pure cashmere/wool why not find local artisans in your area who can provide bespoke handmade items. The pricepoint should be more reasonable than most suggestions on here! I fully stand behind the warmth in such handmade garments as I crochet as a hobby and have created many exquisite winter pieces which only cost me time, effort and the price of material and which have lasted much longer than any store/online bought merchandise.

I love my waterproof yet stylish Blondo boots, and merino wool is essential to keep me warm and comfortable without bulk. And when it’s really chilly, merino wool base-layers are the best! I prefer silk long underwear. The cotton ones get stretched out while wearing them and hold onto water/sweat too much. The poly/man made fabrics can keep you too warm when you go into heated indoors. Silk or a silk and wool combo is great to keep you very warm and not too hot if you get the slightly thicker fabric and not the "silky" lingering type.

It's very interesting to see other people's strategies against the cold. For me thebiggest challenge is to be warm outside and then be able to bear heated rooms when I'm not able to change. For me the ideal is an ankle long high quality woollen coat. It's always elegant and you don't need these incredibly boring, unflattering puffer jackets everyone wears. If you find one that fits you you won't have any problems with big sweaters underneath. I like wearing a big sweater underneath my coat that I can take off when I'm indoors and wear something light underneath. Another advantage of a long coat is that you don't need tights/leggings underneath your jeans because the coat is doing the job and you're comfortable indoors.
I would always go for boxy coats because they're warmer because you have an extra layer of arm air between your body and the coat. The 98% of women who aren't as skinny as you are look like pregant kangaroos in belted coats anyway. ;-)

Thank you, Erin. I've been through many cold winters, too - and did not ever think of several of these tips! I'm going to look for these boots with tread. I've fallen on the ice twice. Never wear hiking shoes or sneakers on the ice. I am short, 5'0", and I sure don't want to add bulk. I live in a cold, damp climate (western Washington) and all my gear has to be seriously waterproof, too. So, unfortunately, I don't get to wear wool coats or furry hats very often. I like the cold, by the way, and I like your stories from upstate New York.

I've always worn leggings under my jeans, but I've never though of using fake leather leggings. I'm about to order some now! Also don't forget about warm socks. I've got some cashmere socks (pricey but worth it) and they are the warmest and softest socks that I own. Layer two pairs of socks does keep you warm, but it's a tight fit in shoes/boots.

Thank you, Erin. All great tips for looking stylish during the Winter. I grew up in Watertown, MA. I have always heard of Watertown NY, because during the Winter, the News broadcasters in Boston would always point to Watertown, NY for temperature comparisons. I think they were trying to make us feel better about our own cold weather. "Well look how cold it is in Watertown, NY." LOL. I always use my silk ski undergarments to layer, but I like your suggestions, too. The layer after a silk undergarment will always slide over very nicely. In the worse storm days, I wear my Apres ski boots from Italy, they are just beautiful with a legging and a Fair Isle sweater. But I like your suggestion about the stylish wedge boot or gripping heel very much. I will take a look at your suggestions, not that I am going anywhere this year. I never had a problem with jackets under coats until recently. I use to have a beautiful long A-lined wool Swing coat, that coat fit everything underneath and still looked stylish, but alas, it went out of style, so I donated it. I have had a hard time finding another coat to fit over my blazers. Thanks for the tip, I just have to look harder, maybe a wrap coat will do the trick. And yes, my mother always told me to wear a hat because you lose a lot of body heat through your head. I like your two head coverings suggestions, I have never thought of that. :-) Thanks again, Erin.

I'm from Alberta Canada and I can verify that these are all EXCELLENT, absolutely true tips!!! Here in the US I constantly overhear people complaining about being cold in the winter when they are NOT dressed for it at all! Being in denial that it's wintertime (i.e., continuing to wear flip flops, shorts and jean jackets) does NOT affect the temperature. It is much sexier IMHO to be calm and classy in appropriate clothing vs. shivering and having your teeth chattering with your arms folded across your chest trying to stay warm. Lol The only thing I would add is that real DOWN is ALWAYS better than poly filling (which is NOT warm at all, just bulky!) That's the first thing I look for (fabric care tag) to see the filling content (down/feathers vs. poly), because trying on in the store at 70 degrees it is easy to be fooled and think a coat is warm when it isn't going to be once you are outside. This is such a good video!

I find that navy blue works well when black looks too harsh. Navy also looks great with camel or white. It's harder to match navy, though, when you want a monochromatic look, unless you buy the pieces from the same brand in the same year.
