What makes the Spanish GP so boring - Chain Bear explains

- Barcelona has hosted the Spanish Grand Prix since 1991, but the circuit has rarely thrown up a memorable race, particularly in dry conditions. In his latest video, Chain Bear explains the variety of reasons that contribute to dull racing at the track, which is currently fighting to save its place on the F1 calendar for 2020.

@@patrykbetlej8704 I didn't fully understand why certain tracks like Hungary are so bad for overtaking until I started playing the game. I had an "ahh ha!!" moment.
@@Silent_Shadow I do the same. I get that it has historical significance, but sometimes things just become outdated. I think it's time that F1 lets go of that track from the calendar. Either that or just make it a qualifying time trial event. The race just doesn't make sense anymore.

Kvyat on Kimi. Around the outside. What a move!!
And russell on kubica
Max on Vettel
Kvyat had much fresher tyres.
@Reverend RunBad Nobody overtakes Kimi in equal machinery/tyres. Very rarely. He is super good at defending.
@Reverend RunBad He didn't. Kimi passed Seb twice at Brazil I thought? Did you even watch last year? Kimi was super unlucky last year. And I've watched F1 for a long time since 1981. A Peak Raikkonen at McLaren in the tyre war > Vettel. By far. The reason Raikkonen had struggles from mid-2013-2018 was simply because of the Pirelli tyre, pressure and camber limits that were imposed after Silverstone 2013. This destroyed Kimi's driving style, which requires a strong front end. At Ferrari, most of the cars understeered like hell, which means Kimi's issues were exacerbated, because, Kimi could not ever get his front tyres up to temperature. Ever. This year, there is more downforce on the cars than ever, and Kimi even said they are starting to feel like the V8's again. Hence his improved form. He had a similar issue from 2007-2009 on the Bridgestone control tyre, but only in quali. Martin Brundle compared Kimi's raw speed in his prime to Senna at the Tribute recently. Think about that.
Who’s here after the Spanish Grand Prix
I’m here to tell you that the 2020 Spanish GP was garbage
"At least we have midfield"
I said to myself... almost napped.
British GP 2020 as well
MotoGP race is unreal there though. Always one of the best of the season.
lorenzo gonna win again?
Well, areodynamics in Moto GP don't have such an effect like they do in Formula 1. Also, Bikes aren't as wide as an F1 car, so being right on the slipstream of the bike in front of you isn't easy.
Cause MotoGP is amazing
Run the race anti clockwise so there are tight slow corners before the straights.
lol awesome idea
Pretty bad idea, that would require significant track modifications to ensure safety, all the run off areas are set up for one direction.
@@deeznoots6241 could be done for next season
Another Happy Landing no it can’t, reverse races are dangerous because tracks only have run off in one direction from the corner, it would require massive modifications that are not cheap. And why bother when the double headers are just a temporary thing due to corona, there are plenty of tracks for F1 to use without having to resort to cheap gimmicks like reverse races.

One simple rule would make it a bit more interesting: To forbid testing on recent F1 tracks.
Professor Chain Bear does it again dropping knowledge on us like sandbags on Mercedes cars at winter testing 😁
Clearly Ferrari is still sandbagging. Autosport told us so. Or they are dragging a sandbag behind the car. I'm not sure which.
@@bmstylee 😅
@@bmstylee autosport sucks and say false information
I think that horrible last chicane makes the situation a lot worse because it's slow, there's only one line through there, and as the first apex is off-cambered, the cars understeer and slide even more creating even more space between each other onto the main straight.
But it's interesting that both Barcelona and Abu Dhabi produce frequently dull races even though both circuits are complete opposites from each other, which means the problem very much lies with the car. This year, the fronts wings were changed to make following easier, and although some drivers have reported that it has kind of worked, it's still very hard to overtake because of the narrow operating window of the Pirellis not allowing drivers to push.
At least with Zandvoort if it's a boring race, it will be on a circuit that drivers enjoy!
They could always bring back the cheese tyres
It's interesting how Kvyat was an exception to the Spanish GP's very limited passing heritage in 2019.
And 2020!
Why did they move Pre-Season testing from Jerez in the first place? Particularly in F1, they shouldn't test at venues hosting races. Although, Barcelona may be off the calendar, so they can use this venue all they want!
@@KevinJDildonik Valencia was the European GP from 09-12, Barcelona was always here well since 91
@@KevinJDildonik Barcelona replaced Jerez.
Previously we used to test at both tracks, but when they decided to limit testing for cost reasons, they just chopped the Jerez tests and left the Barcelona ones. So kind of a victim of circumstance, but probably costs that led to that decision.
Cost
I live an hour from Jerez and it’s pissed me off ever since they moved away from testing there. Track resurfacing played a part in the decision too. Now Jerez is smooth as silk and given the snow issue and cold weather Barca has there’s a chance it could come back. €20 for a VIP day pass, bring it on!
Aaaand here we are. One year later, and this pops up on my feed. What a boring race that was.
Bring back non-skirted ground effect and even more simpler front wings.
IndyCar did that and it worked.
As I recall Red Bull wanted to make the 2017 aero changes with an underwing instead of increases topside aero, due the the reduced wake
I would focus on making the downforce primarily done through ground-effect, with a nice big diffuser/flick-up at the back to toss the air up and out of the way of the next car.
2021 is gonna have non-skirt ground effect cars
I like how this came up in my recommendation right after Spanish GP 2020
Brilliant video! One of the problems with F1 for the past few years is that it hasn't rained at all during the race days for some reason. If it did a bit more frequently then the racing would have been more unpredictable and exciting. There's still hope for this year though....
Great Video guys... Nothing I didn't know already but beautifully presented. Great Tone and not talking down.. Two thumbs up chaps..
So I thought the new areo rules that the FIA imposed this year was supposed to help eliminate dirty air and result in closer racing. Why has this not happened? I'm sure you can explain it very well, Chain Bear. And thanks for the great explanation videos they are very well done.
It has happened but it's not enough
You can never eliminate dirty air. It was a problem in the 60s, just not as bad as it is now. Anything passing through the air leaves a hole in the air behind it, that's just physics
Anyone get this in their recommended for Spain 2020?

Thank you for reminding me even after the race ended
And this comes up in my recommended the day before the Spanish Grand Prix. Thanks for enlightening my spirits RUclips, I was actually thinking give it a chance
lol
The fact that drivers barely make mistakes there, and the fact that it's impossible to overtake.
A video that is made by someone in the know. Chain Bear is awesome.
We should test on tracks that are not currently F1 tracks but who could be nominees for that at some or the other point; that way it works both ways; the fans get varied scenes, the teams get a stable ruleset to test with (still 8 days just each year different sometimes 4 / 4 if you have 2 tracks close) and the tracks can see where they need to improve if they want to be on the F1 agenda and get some exposure to fund that with by local race enthousiasm increasing
Thank you so much, that was so informative!
Thank you RUclips for reminding us before this weekend.
This one will be interesting though. Hedging my bets now, will reply with the inevitable ‘that aged well’

Turns out Mercedes fixed that tire issue from last week
Awesome vid! Love it.
Why track designers don't take this into account and create a fluid circuit where all corners are in "right" order, to improve overtaking? Instead we get streetcircuits, which are mostly forced layouts.
Great video, like always
Make a video like this about the "new" Zandvoort with banked last corner.

It‘s not mercedes fault that they are too good what are they supposed to do? let others win? they must be stupid doing it. I‘m a huge Ferrari fan but the heritage mercedes is building is simply astonishing.
Well... this years GP has started now and you’re right as always...
Circuits are unfairly getting blamed for problems with the cars. The problem solves itself if cars can more closely follow eachother. Circuit layout can make a difference in this area but ultimately cars have to be build to suit close racing regardless of circuit layout rather than being dependent on them.
The current regulations that dont promote close battles are also a problem....
No one has ever explained the effect of following through corners to me before like you did so simply at 3:38. I've always wondered why following in the corners is such a problem when you get such an advantage following on the straights.
Idk why I never connected the dots since I've heard that downforce is the main speed factor in the corners, but your explanation makes a lot of sense!
What a time to be recommended.
One year later and the same still applies. The most significant part for me is the high speed corner leading to a straight, I’ve never realized that.
One year later you were right as rain and all the races that are going to come on this BORING track. I feel asleep actually.
Really enjoyed the review but it would have been great if you continued on and showed us a modified track that would encourage overtaking. Maybe a slow chicane before the main straight with wide entry and exits as an example
If they fix the last turn, make it sharper maybe a 90° - 130°, that would really change it all
If you were to make changes to individual tracks to improve following, what changes would you make to what tracks?
They actually made La Caixa worse. The original corner had a longer turn in to the apex which gives you more time to make your move down the inside. See how the slow arena bends at COTA encourage overtaking.
Need to do this for Monaco
Let's be honest with ourselves here. There's virtual zero passing in F1 as a whole on any track. Baku, Monaco, Australia, Spain? I mean...it's just the way it is at the moment.
The testing theory was disproven this year. Winter testing was moved to Bahrain and the race was still great, while Spain was still boring
At least there was a memorable moment there in 1994 when Schumacher drove part of the race in 5th gear to finish 2nd. Thats one good memory for the Spanish Grand Prix I guess.
Well, that was more interesting than expected ;-)
At Zandvoort they should make a long proper straight from the hairpin at Hugenholtz down to the long right hander at the far end of the circuit and tighten up that right hander. That way you have a straight longer than the pit straight as a 2nd DRS zone. They're already proposing banking the final sweeping right hander on to the pit straight so that should help somewhat with overtaking. But that run into Tarzan is the only potential overtaking opportunity at the moment.
Testing should be held at tracks where they don't race during the season
fell asleep around lap 25 i think. tv was pretty loud too
This came on my recommended. The Spanish gp is this Friday
Great video.
They should get rid of the last chicane so there’s some sort of Parabolica or something. That chicane just stops all the speed into the pit straight.
I genuinely just think it's because the drivers know the track far to well. I mean even in France where there's a couple hundred metres of runoff you see more mistakes.
Anyone else here after watching how dull 2020s boring 'race'
Very informative video. Explains why the race was so boring and routine.i guess the race was basically set on the first lap.
"at least not in it's.....current form." e.g. "video on zandvoort's changes for F1 upcoming" :D :D
Please no. Please just end the F1 greed circus before it can ruin Zandvoort.
ChainsawChuck13 well that’s too late isn’t it :P
Which is interesting because on it's first go-round in it's original config in 1991 it produced a legendary race and the most famous images of Senna and Mansell battling on the main straight, while Schumacher battled both of them through the corners. I don't think it's constructive to use F1 history for every situation, but the '91 race was objectively more exciting.
Great explanation for why the Spanish GP mostly always fails to excite. It comes just at the right time as need to explain to my f1 hating mate why it can suck from time to time so rather then me trying to explain it as I would mess it up I’ll post this to him cheers
This got recommended 3 hours before the Spanish gp
Holy shit this recommended before qualifying
its not the track, its F1
MotoGP has seen epic races there over the years
Will the new regulations reduce dirty air effect?
Kinda yes, i mean This track on the Moto GP is Awesome
On blackpain GT or Resistance is soo fricking exiting, but in F1 bcause of the wide of cars and the narrow of track, cars strugle keep up
I love this track (a bit unfair bc im from barcelona) but idk i like it. Not the best for F1 but i love to drive it in gt sport
Apart from the fact that almost every other track on the calendar produces better racing than Barcelona. You know, those inconvenient facts that you don't want to mention because they hurt the "F1 bad" narrative
Could you make a video about what needs to be inproved in zandvoort for f1?
Very curious to your altered track layout for Barcelona/Zandvoort ;)
I just saw the thumbnail which went 'what creates a dull f1 race' and my brain went 'spain'
it's worth trying to change moving direction from time to time to make the races less predictable.
Part of the problem is that the teams have and do spend so much time there when testing. The drivers and teams know it too well
Also, Renault's lack of straight line speed and hence Danny Ric's inability to overtake this season. Otherwise, I'm sure there'd actually be interesting racing in the midfield.
There has been some interesting racing in the midfield... but all Sky Sports ever broadcasts live is shot after shot of Ferrari fucking up their strategy once again.
Please bring back the Turkish Grand Prix. It used to be so much fun
Why don't the host nation rotate the venues between circuits within the country that comply to the rule and at the same time banning winter tests at circuits in the calendar a year prior up after the hosting year?
Rotate Spanish GP between Catalunya, Jerez, and Aragon.
For USA, rotate USGP between COTA, Indianapolis, Long Beach, Watkins Glen, Sonoma Raceway, Laguna Seca, Road America, St Petersburg, Birmingham, Mid-Ohio, Daytona.
For Italy, rotate Italian GP between Monza, Imola, Misano, Valleunga, and Mugello.
For Japanese GP, rotate between Suzuka, Fuji, Motegi, Autopolis, and Sugo.
Those are just some examples. I believe when this being implemented the numbers of dull races will be reduced to bare minimum because virtually everyone will go to each circuit as a virgin for each season.
@Wan R I think each country could at least try to alternate two circuits only like Germany alternanting Hockenheim and Nurburgring. Too much can be a bit confusing especially in terms of logistics, audience and organising costs.
Wait till this weekend, tyres will go everywhere with that weather
Funny how this video pops up after the 2020 Spanish gp and was exactly the same boring race
Was there actually a reason given for them adding that last chicane? Even in games, it used to be such a fun track to drive before that.
Yes. Lack of run-off at the exit.
Disruptive weather events such as rain, wind, or *extreme heat*. This bodes well for this upcoming race.
So much for that
Now this will be recommended after Spanish GP 2021
What creates a dull F1 race? Herman Tilke tracks that don’t allow for overtaking.
Poorly designed city street tracks like Monaco that don’t allow for overtaking.
Driver/Racing Team dominance from uncompetitively rich and overly funded teams or cheating F1 cars.
Combining your last ( positive and negative feedback loops in F1) video and this one, wouldn't it be a good idea to give teams further back in the standing more free practice time before a circuit? Eg. Team on 1st place. 1h free practice befora quali. T2 1,5h. T3 2h, T4 2,5h, etc. Teams that have more than Xh of free practice can do all the hours free practice with unlimited engine components? This does increase the chance of top teams having complete wrong quali/race set-up!
More content like this please.
They should have a rule where if you were on the podium last race, or if you are in the top 2 of the ladder, you don't get to use practice 1, or a practice session of your choice.
Catching this for 2020 season .cheky
I disagree that it's very easy for teams to prepare cars for Q and race in Spain even if they have missed some part of free practice before Q. Yes, it might be easier than at any other circuit, but please remember that teams don't stop developing their cars after winter/spring tests are over, and because of that optimal car performance is always a moving target.
But it's usually very early in the season, with minimal development on the car
they should rely more on the deffuser for downforce, and less on the wings
This is what they do in Formula E, and they are bumper to bumper most of the race
@@TheAnoniemo formula e is a lot slower though, so they need less downforce.
Formula one used to go for difussers, then the cars were becoming too fast for the tracks to be rendered safe to they limited it, it would be nice to bring it back though, the glory days of diffusers
@@timothyheimbach3260 Then again F1 is faster, so the same aero would generate more downforce I guess?
Bernie was right. You have to make it rain for races to not be this boring. Throw water in the track and let them have it.
The problem with Catalunya and overtaking is that the areas that should be good for overtaking are preceded by long fast corners (final turn onto pit straight into turn 1, turn 3 into turn 4, turn 8 into back straight into turn 9) where the following car loses time through the preceding corner in dirty air and only makes that time back on the straight, rather than gaining overspeed and able to pass. It's perfect for motorcycling, but terrible for boring F1.
I liked the race. 3 different tyres. 2 stop worked. And safety car as a bonus.
Instead of DRS, Drag REDUCTION System, why don't we have DES, Drag ENLARGEMENT System. So instead of reducing drag down the straight, instead you can *increase* downforce around the corners? Obviously getting movable areo parts on all front/rear wings is a bit impracticable perhaps, but surely they could pull it off. Or is it not as simple as that?
No it will cause the wing stall, make it even less downforce and even more drag.
Joshimuz thats not how air works. You are effectively making an airbrake and would add a lot of drag as well killing all the downforce
That's called active areodynamic, it is applied on many road supercars like Porshe 918, McLaren P1. The reason they baned active areodynamic is because it makes the car diven more by computer rather than driver, the same reason they stop using traction contral.
Interesting idea, not sure if it would actually work. But it does add more complexity to building and developing a car (and thus you would need a bigger budget) which wouldn't help in the battle against big budget teams dominating
They had it in 2009 already with the movable front wing, which driver could change on the go with a button. It was next to useless that it rarely even got mentioned.
Brilliant explanation! To be honest, I am only interrested in F1 because of this highend technology. For close racing, I prefer TCR Touringcars.
Winter testing at a non race track, don't mind testing at a race track after the race like this week as next year's car will be different. There are still storiea through the field but the on track action at places like Barcelona are getting to and far between
What makes any race boring? The same people and the same team on the podium again and again.
I’d much rather watch F2 and F3
Then watch those! No one is forcing you :)
@@Frozen_frog I'm just merely expressing my opinions, no one force me and I know that. Don't like it? Leave it

Dadul Ludad Daytona roval should be one
Barcelona isn't the problem, is the current formula 1 regulations, this year's formula 2 feature race was fantastic, if a car loses over 50% of it's downforce when following another car there's a huge problem
