Why Do F1 Cars Spark?

- Why do Formula 1 cars create a shower of sparks when racing at 200mph? What are the differences between the sparks in the 1980's and the sparks now? You've come to the right place to find out.

Newbie F1 fan here. Came into it mid 2019 season. This was really awesome. The sparks actually caused me some anxiety not knowing the cause. Honestly don't know why I watch with my anxiety levels sometimes. Never shouted at my TV so much haha. But this will atleast calm the anxiety over sparks since I now know the cause. Ace! 😊

I've always had a question about this. Theoretically, these sparks are due to friction between the car and the track. Wouldn't this friction slow the car down by milliseconds perhaps? (Just curious)
100%
The friction is heavily outweighed by the downforce gain from being so close to the ground
@@Khorshedalam1992 truu
@@Khorshedalam1992 Yep, the friction may contribute to say 0.1% (not sure the actual value), buts the gains from the down force probably outweigh the friction by several times. Man, physics is my favorite subject.

Your content is top notch, in many senses. Please keep up the good work. Are there more such channels with similar depiction of content but on topics apart from F1?
Also, the DRS can cause sparks: With less downforce coming from the rear wing (when DRS is open), and the normal amount of downforce from the front wing it can affect the aero balance of the front and rear of the car as the ride height is lower in the front than the rear= sparks
Aled2187 you are right only if the skid blocks are in front of the front axel, but they are not.

Thank you for answering this question!!!
yes! thank you, i've been wondering this since i got back to f1 after a 15 year hiatus.
Love them. It really gives the feeling of racing on the edge. I seem to remember Scalextric even introduced cars that sparked in the late '80s/early '90s!
Mansell-Senna moment was so awesome, side by side at 300 kmph sparks flying, vapour trails from the rear wing, what a scene to behold.

Most cars in f1 have road going cars, f1 parts are the very best out there, all except redbull....so basically at some stage a performance part , either engine, back wing for supercars...like the super car that nearly killed the stig taking a corner at 150+..went spinning for ages, stig say's, put a wing at the back and it'll break the lap record, a week later , he did just that... Everyone appreciate teams efforts for making faster cars year after year. But very few appreciate FIA for making races safer and cars faster
racing will ALWAYS have some element of danger involved..just look at the tragic events at Spa last season...freak accidents like Spa and Jules Bianchi's are a rare occurrence thank god but will always happen,it's just the nature of open cockpit racing..

I thought it was because they filled the tires with fairly little air, say 15 psi in order to allow thermal expansion. In Stock Car Racing, waiting for the tire pressures to come up because of this thermal expansion is often referred to as “Letting the car come to you.”

Just what I needed after this day to make it a bit better. Formula video + listening to the music I like (Delta Parole, Metallica and other) make me feel the speed and excitement!
You can see that at Daytona with stock car racing when the car's get bunched up together high speeds at the start of the race when the air pressure on the tires are low.
"Maximise downforce" during the ground effect era 😂 cmon Matt
Its not a big deal I see Honda's do this all the time
I think sparks just make your car look broken.
One time I was driving down the freeway and hit a rather large bump, my muffler mounts broke and I started dragging my muffler and all I could see in my mirrors were sparks. Had like 900 more miles to drive that day too. I lucked out and found an S hook thingy on the side of the highway which I used to rehang the muffler, then my car wouldn't start. After waiting for AAA for a bit and knowing there wasn't any shops close enough to get a free tow to, we ended up push starting the car which worked. Had to push it up a small hill first. Made it home without any more problems after that though.
Thanks for not stretching this vid
Short answer: too low
Long answer: way too low
Correct answer: way too good
F1 is truly unbelievable when it comes to burning money. There is always talk of cost cutting, etc, etc. But using a rare metal like titanium just to make sparks is pretty crazy. Between the 50 thousand pounds piston, five thousand pounds break rotor, all of it going to the bin at the end of the season, I sometimes wish F1 would truly get more basic and leveled, so we got back to a driver's championship and not a technology championship.
Titanium is not a rare or particularly valuable metal.
I have 3 sports bikes in my workshop.
All 3 have full Titanium exhausts fitted as standard and can be replaced for only a few quid .
Naw, heavy disagree. I love the extravagance that goes into Formula One. There is plenty of other types of racing where it is quite a bit more basic.
It’s F1, not GT4
This video sparked my interest.
I always thought the titanium bolts were places there to gauge downforces. Too many sparks meant you could lower the downforces a bit and not lose much performance. But I stand corrected.
Because metal hits the road.
The car is low.
