16:26 YES it does. Undercut and overcut strategies go a long way in determining who wins the race. Pitstop timing will also come into play. When safety cars pull up, that's an opportunity for the racers and teams to change their strategy to get the optimum tire for the rest of the race. Weather changes like rain and dry also play a huge role in determining what tire strategy they are willing to choose. This opens up the grid and allows even the slower cars to race with the faster ones if they have proper strategy. They could do an undercut and get a harder compound to last the entire race, and in that way then can try and fend off the faster cars behind them at the end of the race, and if they can do that, that will be an amazing result and an amazing showcase of racing skills. And if you're in a faster car, you can do an overcut and pit in a bit later than others so that you can get into a softer compound for the rest of the race and chase every one up the field. And if you win the race doing that, it would also be an amazing result and showcase of racing skills. All these factors create opportunities for the entire grid to race with each other, and allows for unusual results, which makes it exciting.

It's great to hear someone talking about Pirelli drawing the shortest draw. When other companies had the monopoly on tyres, like Goodyear in the '90s, they just put out the best tyres they could. Or, at the very least, a good tyre (like when they were forced to make grooved tyres). When Pirelli got the contract, they were forced to accept absurd rules, created by the FIA with no real need. Like "make the tire last only X laps! it will be more fun!" or "hey, next year we are increasing downforce and power, so you have to provide a new tire, that will degrade in X laps. But with no testing at all! It would be costly. And we want this to be a surprise for everyone! This will surely increase the spectacle with no risk at all!" (Silverstone 2013). Frankly, i'm surprised Pirelli is still in F1. Being in F1 has only damaged their reputation, and (largely) not by their fault.
as a f1 fan you should definitely know that the current spec tires are engineered to fail for entertainment Pirelli even said that themselves back in early 2010 when they wanted to make races more interesting and have more tire strategy rather than just fueling and sprinting to the end which was extremely popular in the 2000s and no overtaking. Tires back then lasted much longer There also is no more tire war so its not necessarily the best tech, The 2000s era tires were faster despite being grooved than todays tires. After 2005 us gp, having two tire manufacturers became such an issue that they went with one.
I love when Donut acknowledges the existence of F1, but then they say things like "it'd be better without pit stops"... Sorry what? Take out the pit stops and races would be even more boring LOL. They may understand the technical stuff but sure they still don't get the sport.

Almost fully agree. 2005: no tire changes in pit stops, tires were grippy (very much so considering the straight grooves) and lasted the whole race. The only downside was Indy 2005, otherwise we had races like Japan, Canada, San Marino, Hungary where other strategy events and pure racing made it exciting.
There is a 305 km minimum race distance+they use the same set for 3 laps in quali and another warmup lap which are another 15-20km on the tire. 50 miles is easy for them as races are usually 1 stop.
So that’s 180 miles and let’s be honest there’s usually 2 stops if going full tilt on softs, if managing tyres to 1 stop they’re limiting performance and it’s track dependant, so 2 stops let’s say 60-70miles for arguments sake? 🤷♂️

No pitting would feel pretty boring without something like “attack zones” like in formula e just because the lead car would likely stay where they are with out anything limiting them. Instead of having to be within a seconds time of another car of to activate drs, drivers can go through attack zones to activate. I also think penalties may have to be longer or something to keep the drivers from driving recklessly and also to keep things interesting
That's already the case with formula one if you think about it if nobody makes any mistakes you would most likely finish where you started so if you got the pole almost every race no competition
Penalties are already long AF, I think we must not promote reckless driving but promote driving on the edge and with dirty air with these wide cars we cannot race without DRS, but the ctual flap can be made smaller with the 2022 cars.
Formula E is just lame. I tried, I really tried to like it but there's just so much dirty driving and those attack zones and fan boosts are just dumb. Less degradation means less grip. More grip typically means less degradation. These tires also have to withstand the most stressful torque and lateral forces than just about any other race car.

“Does a variety in race strategy even make the race any better” yes. Yes it does. Have you ever watched any race. When a race has basically 1 strategy that is fastes, and everything goes to plan, the race is boring. However when there are multiple uncertain strategies, and maybe some chaos is thrown in (safety car meaning only some people pit while some stay out, etc) the race is exciting, ex.Italy, Sakhir, Mugello.
Couldn't you do this artificially though without forcing tire blowouts? Maybe something with DRS where it's manually fitted for X number of laps, smaller fuel tanks, something isn't prone to (relative to normal tire operation) catastrophic failure?
Isnt blow outs due to greed via strategy? Theres data for everything on an F1 car, and drivers are in constant communication with engineers monitoring performance. If there wasnt pitstops, it be a shit show, if refueling wasnt such a hazard, id be interested to see the impact on race outcomes.
@@dparson7 there are almost never blowouts though, it’s extremely rare and it’s usually due to a combination of pirelli miscalculating with track conditions and the teams choosing to take a risk and run for a long time
@@reilandeubank yes, but if the drivers are saying there is unnecessary danger created due to tire degradation, the pit stop is what creates the entertainment.

As a F1 fan, this is the kind of content I wait for and aspire to see from one of my favourite channel

Pirelli even said that themselves back in early 2010 when they wanted to make races more interesting and have more tire strategy rather than just fueling and sprinting to the end which was extremely popular in the 2000s and no overtaking. Tires back then lasted much longer
There also is no more tire war so its not necessarily the best tech,
The 2000s era tires were faster despite being grooved than todays tires.
After 2005 us gp, having two tire manufacturers became such an issue that they went with one.

I feel like I'm watching Mario Cart without turtle shells. The Dirty AF driving is the most annoying thing. They're slow af also being capped at 300ish hp so their batteries will last long enough for a race.

It has become less “best driver” and “best car”, which, if that’s what you like seeing, fair, but then human drivers are kinda irrelevant at that point. Knowledge of how a car interacts with air, and the advancement of engine technology has gotten to the point you need millions of dollars to squeeze out another half second of lap time.
@@Appletank8 it sounds like they’re able to put millions of dollars into tire research & development just to cater to the FIA’s bottleneck though. It’s obvious that drivers are pushing the envelope regarding their driving ability, however I think that’s the point. Cars would probably be able to get faster lap times if they were self driven, but I don’t think that would be near as entertaining. I know some people disagree, but I think the whole essence of racing is that they are pushing the envelope of automobile technological advancement, while also allowing drivers to push the boundaries of their own limitations

Everybody has the same tires, so it’s not really going to change all that much, outside of being something the drivers have to keep track of.

I think the tires add a lot to the race strategy. Also I'd imagine the reason they only last so few miles is because you have to balance softness/grip with degradation. Less degradation means less grip. More grip typically means less degradation. These tires also have to withstand the most stressful torque and lateral forces than just about any other race car.
Let them race! Maybe even allow teams to choose their own tire brands and capabilities, encouraging brands to compete there too.

pit strategy makes races massively exciting. especially when it comes to circuits like monaco, where passing is almost impossible, without pitstops the racing would be dull
Let teams refuel mid race again
Isnt blow outs due to greed via strategy? Theres data for everything on an F1 car, and drivers are in constant communication with engineers monitoring performance. If there wasnt pitstops, it be a shit show, if refueling wasnt such a hazard, id be interested to see the impact on race outcomes.
@@dparson7 there are almost never blowouts though, it’s extremely rare and it’s usually due to a combination of pirelli miscalculating with track conditions and the teams choosing to take a risk and run for a long time
