The Spanish GP has always been a bit of a tough race for those looking for an exciting spectacle. Why is Barcelona constantly stuck in this rut? There are two factors really: over-testing and circuit characteristics.

There's a simple fix to solve the problems related to the layout of this track: make the car run the opposite way.
I don't know why nobody thinks about this solution, but if you look at the nature of the corners and the braking zones, running on this circuit counterclockwise would give formula 1 cars way more opportunities to attempt overtakes, especially because most of the long fast corners would arrive AFTER the straights, which means that they would become partially mild-deceleration and partially mild-acceleration zones. There will still be some hard braking zones and some pure high speed corners, but they will become less impactful on the following cars, because the time loss on these sections would not be multiplied by the long straights after (if you start a long straight slower than the preceding car, you end up loosing a lot of time). Moreover, the (currently) first corner (Elf curve) would become an extremely interesting attack zone, similar to certain sections of the Barhain track, as well as the (currently) second last corner (chicane Racc), which would become a very tricky braking point after the cars would clear the Caixa curve extremely close each other.
The reason why "nobody has thought about it" is because of safety. The run of areas are designed with the race direction in mind. The current turns: 1, 2, 6, 8, 11, 15 would all have too small run off areas....
How tf could you overtake there? XD
@@squeakybunny2776 isnt moto gp race on the reverse layout?
@@mihir1181 well, it's not the FIA how would pay for it. It's the track owners themselves who are more often then not much less financially capable of redesigning the whole track.
@@tilentgamer8758 I wouldn't know I don't watch moto gp. I also don't know how fast they go which would also be a factor deciding if run offs are large enough or not

I agree..shit!
I think the chicanes had to be put there to make that part of the circuit more safe.

Anyone else here before Barcelona this week and hoping for a super hot race?

It will be interesting to see the racing now that they have gone back to the classic layout with no final chicane.
My first online simrace at Barcelona happened to use that layout. It was genuinely awful, especially the mid-speed corners
Catalunya is not the problem, the problem are the giant F1 that we have now, this is the problem. Combined with a team that have made 5 1-2 results in the 5 first races..
I have seen there Blancpain, F2, F3 etc and is proper racing.
@Ivan Martin Jimenez I am sorry but that ain't the problem. So what, you expect Mercedes to stop operating at its best just because you don't like it. Ferrari has huge amounts of money, maybe even more than Mercedes, but look at where they are. Instead of blaming the team that is efficient and has done everything right, maybe start blaming the ones who aren't on par with them when they should.
Barcelona has always been shit for overtaking though. Even before the Mercedes domination, before the aero rules changes. Ever since it's been on the F1 calendar it has produced mostly boring races under several different eras of Aero rules, engine rules, completely different tyre rules, different teams winning. It's just the nature of the track that makes overtaking very difficult.
@@collinsmilgo8869 That's right, get rid of all those idiots.... you just need two cars, and if that doesn't work, just one car!
Catalunya has always been a boring track. Nothing to do with this era of F1. There are just no good overtaking opportunities

And of course, let's remember that Mercedes started developing V6 turbo engine back in 2009.

Great video as always!!!
Well, having watched the race highlights for F2 and F3 that the guys at the formula 1 youtube channel have published I start doubting the fault is on the circuit but rather on F1 itself.
Yes they are too fast
I wouldnt say speed is the problem but rather the reliance on downforce as it has been explained in the video
F2 and F3 are less aero dependent. Hence, they are less affected by the dirty air around Barcelona, so can race more closely.
Racing is generally a balance between quantiry and quality of overtaking. F1 from 2011-16 had the highest levels of overtaking but most were simple DRS passes on the straights. Early 2000s cars and modern cars have far fewer overtakes but can pull off moves like Alonso around Schumacher at 130R.
Finding a balance somewhere in between would be ideal but it is very tricky to manage.
Yes obviously. But not only F1. Barcelona has always provided boring races since the beginning, except under rain. It's the perfect testtrack, but just forget it when it comes to races. On the other hand, it often produces exciting MotoGp races
@@ulysse21 well obviously since MotoGP has the same advantage as F2 and F3. Less aerodynamics.
Great work. Thanks for that!
It's kinda funny that approximately the same physics influences the excitement of a race where high speed cornering is involved, as what limits airport capacity.
The primary factor in how close together two aircraft can take off, is wake turbulence meaning the following aircraft is at high risk of crashing if it takes off too soon after an aircraft in front.
This leads to the counter-intuitive situation where it's more efficient to let the small, low capacity aircraft take off first, rather than the big, high capacity heavy ones.
Because the large aircraft have much larger wake turbulence, and the smaller ones are much more vulnerable to the dangers of it.
So the gap between a small aircraft and a large one can be much smaller if the small one goes first than if the large one does.
So it looks like the tiny 'selfish' individual planes get special treatment at busy airports, but in reality this happens because it's more efficient for everyone...
Great video mate!
I would love to see more tracks reviewed like this, for overtaking mostly but maybe also a few other aspects.

With the coming replacement from Barcelona to Zandvoort they can keep Barcelona as the test track
Nah, the Spanish GP is more likely to be safe and sound considering the recent rumours. More likely Hockenheim will get axed (at least for 2020) if the track owners and Liberty Media don't reach an agreement.

Next weekend race in Barcelona? Let’s recommend this
Here from 2022... sufficed to say we had an exciting GP
Do a video where you fix Barcelona! (and other tracks)
Reduce car width from 2000mm to 1600mm. Reduce cars length from 5500mm to 4000mm. Track fixed.
Maybe use a standard video game solution: Change the direction of the track i.e drive it backwards
@@jakoblindgren6604 There’s not enough run off areas.
That's really cool!
go to the FIA website and download the list of FIA certified tracks, look at the "Grade 1" section. There's your choices for the GP tracks as they sit now. A track can work on various safety and performance measures to make "grade 1" level license, but you also have to take a look at the facilities and access.
For example, Watkins Glen in central New York state in the USA (currently FIA Grade 2) used to be the home of the US GP many moons ago. It could achieve the technical improvements to score a Grade 1 license if given enough money. BUT, it is out in the boonies; the logistics of teams, F1/FIA staff, and even the fan volume of modern GP's is just WAY beyond the local infrastructure.
So, use that to help guide your guesses on where the replacement (if it happens) may be.
(Incidentally, for this reason, I bet you will see the USGP get renewed in Austin, even if FIA has to agree to some non-standard concessions. Cause there really isn't a viable alternative in the USA.)
One of the greatest Motogp races ever happened in Barcelona. Valentino Rossi vs Jorge Lorenzo 2009 if you f1 fans are looking for a truly fantastic race on this track I recommend searching that race. There was also a lot of meaning behind the race since it was two teammates on the same bike fighting for the title
Excellent or as always
I got idea how to improve overtaking but i'm not 100% sure it may work out and would delighted if you said what you think. It's basicly about changing the "source" of gril from aero to tires. Let's make with way less downforce which would allow drives to cope with dirty air. Also benefits from slipstream and DRS would be reduced, so they will be more likely to look for moves in more specific places (like Turn 8 in Catalunya). To keep cars as quick as they are FIA should ask Pirelli to reproject the tires so they would be super grippy. If they would be also projected to hit the cliff no later than 50% of race distance on hardest copmpound it will force teams to at leats 2 stops. 3 stops also would be posibble as car on fresh tires wouldn't be hold down behind other cars. For me it's the best way which could make F1 great again
It's not exciting to watch but it's great to drive on (from my sim experience)
Brilliant!
Thanks for the video, now it makes sense as to why Albon was having issues trying to close in and overtake Grosjean on the last few laps....
Ever since the start of the F1 races, one or two teams dominated the races. From Maserati and Ferrari, Lotus, Tyrell, McLaren, Williams, Red Bull and now Mercedes. Only drastic rulechanges will break that streak (as we have seen in the past) and will provide us with one or two other teams that will dominate. This can only change if the FIA makes huge changes that benefit the lower ranked teams much more then the higher ranked teams. One idea: a maximum number of laps for testing, with the lowest amount for the last years champion and the most for the lowest in previous championship. So for example: in 2019 Mercedes would get 100 laps, and Williams 1000. There are a lot of other ideas on how to make the playing field more even for teams.
To make races more exciting, there are also a lot of ideas. Most come down to changes to the tracks and reducing dirty air. Ons example is to extemely simplify the front and rear wing.
One thought that I had is to drastically reduce the size of the cars. It reduces drag and dirty air. It allows for more space of the cars to overtake in corners (less car, more room) and it also provides high level engineering, as smaller cars are more difficult to make and fast and safe. Btw, I got this idea after seeing a vid that compared the sizes of F1 cars throughout the decades.
But, all the ideas, all the wishes, all the desires to change F1 into something less expensive and more spectacular while keeping the core values like the high level of engineering and being the king of motorsport, all of that wont matter. Ferrari will veto any change that does not favor them, or threaten to leave the F1. Mercedes does the same. RedBull pumps so much money iinto their two teams, that Liberty Media wont propose any changes that will make the teams unhappy, even when it is for the good of the sport. Money rules, and the biggest spenders want to keep it as it is: rolling advertisement for their products.
This are fantastic ideas. If only they became reality!
Watching this the day before i visit the circuit. Just gonna look round
For very short period of time car behind could follow close but tyre temperature would skyrocket quickly together with extensive tyre wear. Pretty much - one lap max to try to overtake, if not - fall behind few seconds and do clear stint and try again after 30 minutes. Funny that tracks that are less suitable for overtakes, gives better feeling for driving and vice versa.
Solution is easy: Move Spanish GP to Motorland Aragón using the 2 km long "straight" and the sharp hairpin at the end.
Máté Ágoston yeah i can easily see a race thats better than any at catalunya (passing spots at aragon: t1, t5, t12, t17)

WTCR is racing this weekend in Zandvoort. Hopefully we will see how that racetrack behaves for series that aren't as aero dependant as F1
Was boring this year aswell
Honestly after watching the F3 and F2 races, I think it's that F1 is boring more than the track
Dirty air just plays a bigger part in F1 tbh. For F1 to be exciting you need a lot of slow corners to allow for overtaking.
@@adamleblanc5294 No, you need to shrink the cars and restrict downforce.
@@adamleblanc5294 you could change to The short layout wich has an stong brake zone in the shorcut.
I agree, they change the design,so cars can be closer, but the main problem is drs why but it on the main straight they should have what formula E,has to boost the car for how man minutes of extra energy or speed or like Indy car use the boost button for max of 12 times in the race.with drs you no the area every time.or they could alternate when each area comes active, around the track
@@redd605 You can't do that. That just doesn't work, at all
I'll miss Spain if it ever actually drops off the circuit, I actually enjoy driving the track in pretty much every game its in.
Agree.
The problem is the last chicane. If they found a way to modify so that you can carry speed through to the pit straight better. It would make it way easier to overtake. Find a way to modify it or get rid of it. That would make it so much better
Here's an interesting thought, why not have a front wing system similar to drs, but have it increase front end downforce, have a single "DIS" zone on a long downforce heavy zone/corner and give the car following the other a way to keep closer to the car ahead. This could work on corners like the spoon corner at suzuka and barcelonas turn 3. What are your thoughts on this bear?
Nice idea. But I dont think that it will be implemented soon. The only hope for us is the 2021 regulation.
I'm not sure but... isn't that very dangerous? I'm thinking this might lead to braking too late or steering incorrectly due to not knowing how much downforce you'll have
Wow you hit 200K subs?! i remember watching you from the beginning like at 5k subs
Old layout with no cut short turns are the best Barcelona Spain GP in F1 and MotoGP Bike Race because in 2016 MotoGP Season ended the life by Luis Salom 39 rider at old corner approach with serious impact
The problem is not the track but the reliance on down force.
Reduce or remove the wings and make the car designers focus on mechanical grip.
Look at go-karts and how close and exciting they are to watch.
enjoy your 150 km/h max speed in f1 mate
I think pre-season testing should be held at non-championship circuit like Jerez or Valencia (Riccardo Tormo). If the Spanish GP is droped (which seems unlikely given the latest news) or it's moved elsewhere (there were plans for that before - Valencia cough, cough) I think Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya will remain the primary testing ground. I think Riccardo Tormo should be the new pre-season testing venue
Speaking of Zandvoort - this circuit in its current form is nothing like the one from 1985, when the Dutch GP was last held. The cars also evolved. But the problem is this - The Netherlands does not have a suitable track for modern F1 as Assen, the other Dutch track, is more suitable for motorcycles and any layout changes will need to be approved by the FIM. Another street race (around either Amsterdam or Rotterdam) is not going to be welcomed warmly as if F1 didn't have enough street circuits (or tracks that use normal road network like Melbourne, Montreal and Sochi) already with the all-new Hanoi Street Circuit in Vietnam. Also I think the Dutch GP could be alternating with the German GP at Hockenheim. Mexico is also on the chop given the limited state support for the race recently.
Interesting that F1 at catalunya is less than exciting, while some of my favorite Bike races have been there.
it makes sense though given the state of the cars and the inability to follow close.

Hi, I have a query/suggestion/something in between.
Autosport uploaded your video a couple of days ago, so my 'view' went to them. Normally I wouldn't view this upload as it came later.
I am assuming there are quite a few like me. Less views means that RUclips would pay you lesser than what it could have been. So, probably Autosport is paying you better.
My query is that is there something in your contract with Autosport that restricts you from uploading it before them.
My suggestion is that if there is no such restriction, you should post it before. Because after all, this channel is the thing that got you the Autosport contract.
You are great. I hope your contract with Autosport pays better than RUclips. I always “thumbs up” here to hope this page gets more.
This is ofcourse all true, and I agree, it would be better if we didn't race at the same circuit we also test at allready. The question is though, do the circuits have to change, or the cars? Circuits like Spain and Zandvoort are both beautifull, also the overtaking in other racing series is at those same tracks hard, but far from impossible. The F1 cars should be easier to follow eachother. I don't think simplifying more earodynamic stuff is the best solution for that, the new front wings also don't seem to do much. I think they should go back to smaller cars, this makes tighter circuits in relation to the car less tight and will produce more racinglines. I mean in 2015/2016 the overtaking was still pretty good. Also the tyres is still a big problem in F1, they should be either so sensitive you have to stop twice, if you like it or not, or you should have tyres that are almost undestroyable, so they can push all throughout the race.
God this was some incredible foreshadowing
@Chain Bear, can you make a video of zandvoort comparing what you've said in this video and the changes made to track for this year?
It would be really useful to have an idea of a "perfect" track. If you were to design a track how would it look? It would be great to see what tracks it's most alike.
We now have several straights which are defined as DRS zones, where the following car can activate their Drag Reduction System to aid overtaking. Any reason why we shouldn't also have a Downforce Increase System, to aid overtaking on corners too? Or at least overcome the dirty air problem?
I think it's too complicated to have Drs and downforce increase system on cars . However running cars on less drag as standard and then having a downforce increase system has potential however that could be dangerous or too risky for drivers and then they won't attempt them or they could wich could make things more exciting of course
*cough* the bus would agree
So, Barcelona could make t1 a sweeping right hander that leads into a sudden kink as you find yourself in what would normally be t3, the lap goes on as usual until you get to turn 9, you go straight on, onto the runoff and then it’s that runoff’s right hander, on to the straight than onto the outside version of the next corner and take the old chicane to finish your lap
What if you drove it in reverse? Seems to fix some of the high speed corner to straight bits
Before I watch: it's a great track!
Chain bear is music to my ears! Fantastic videos.
I'm in so much s-PAIN while watching these races!
How about making split tracks on part of the track where the cars could go left or right and later merge with both sides needing about the same time. That would make overtaking for the faster car easier. No dirty air.
I didn't even know that Max had said that about Zandvoort. So his most recent comments are definitely pure PR talk :D
Most the responses that drivers give are. We gotta wait for them to retire to tell us how they really felt about anything.
I mean, I guess that when they say they find it fun to drive, that's probably true: it looks like a banger of a circuit to drive around, with all the flowing corners and bankings and what not. But on the racing part, that's probably a bit less exciting.
would be nice to see examples from f1 races (or do individual clips demonstrated as exampled get taken down?).
You were so good i thought i was watching WTF1
He is much better though
Would be great if they practiced at Jerez. Better weather all year round, not as hot as the rest of Andalucía or Spain in the summer and just enough rain in the winter to test for wet conditions.

Watch wtcr there today,it sucks, analysis done
Circuit de Catalunya is one of my favorite circuits for hotlaps, it's a shame F1 might not race there anymore
Of course this pops up on my recommendations when Barcelona is literally 2 days away
What if the FIA/F1 built propose built testing track. A track that has all the track features so that teams can get good data but has little or no grandstands and only the nesscary media facilities. Maybe have larger garages for the teams so they can bring extra cars or make larger changes to the car that you normally can't do at track like Barcelona.
Request you to make one video on below topic as I am very curious
I watch MotoGP and often few races are held on same track where F1 race also happens
However, I hv heard commentators saying that this track is not meant for motorcycle racing in some cases coz they give boring races when it comes to MotoGP
I don’t recollect the name but I guess they said it for sipvestone n then said for Indianapolis n some other one which I don’t recollect now
However tracks like sepang give all around excitement for both F1 n MotoGP
Pls make some video explaining this.
Will be very happy to see that
Cheers you doing a great job man..keep it up.
Barcelona give hell lot of rocking races
They say this because right now in F1 to get overtakes and excitement you need hair pins, because down force plays less of a role at low speed and heavy breaking zones are a good opportunity. In motorcycle racing however flowing tracks provide better racing as rider skill, lines and tactics play a bigger role in making an overtake work on a flowing track.
Make a video on how much the size of the cars make a difference during a race. For instance, how much more interesting will the racing at Hungary or Monaco become with smaller cars?
Some weeks ago WTCR and TCR Europe (touring car series BTW) had races at the Hungaroring and were interesting to be fair. Yeah, the tricky conditions did help too.
Great explanation. The Spanish GP 2020 was indeed super boring and it makes sense why even Max couldn't keep up with Lewis.

The current cars are just not good for racing. They're good at one lap pace and that's it basically. They're too wide and too long, too much downforce dependant.

The cars are way too fast nowadays. I hate to say it but racing at these speeds just arent possible at most tracks. The issue isnt the tracks, its the cars.
