Just found out that Betty White just passed away and going through videos of her. She was so talented and entertaining. She will be missed by many. RIP Betty White
This was the first role I ever saw Betty play. I was 9 years old, and I though she was a terrible person. That goes to show you what a terrific actor she is.
Ikr.....and she couldn't be lovelier or kinder on talk shows, such a good sport too. At times her sense of humor is wicked to the point of bordering on smutty---totally unexpected from a woman of her age and the era in which she was raised. Not judging bec it doesn't offend me....but it will make people sit up and take notice. Kudos to Betty for her boldness.
She was able to portray very different characters in her 80+ year career. Here, Sue Ann was ruthless. On the Golden Girls, Rose was kind and very naive. Elka on Hot in Cleveland was blunt to the point of having no filer. On games shows as herself, she was warm and kind to both the celebs and the audience members. However, all characters that she played had perfect comedic timing. We shall not see the likes of her again. God Speed Betty (1922-2021).
EXACTLY! I was about the same age, watched that show (and Bob Newhart, and Carol Burnett…) every week. Sue Ann kind of cemented my earliest understanding of what a, ummm….snooty b*** was!
Betty was extremely lucky that she got two major roles on hugely popular TV series in which she was able to play two completely different characters - one conniving and crafty and mean, and the other clueless and decent and nice. And she was a good enough actress to pull off both women perfectly. She acknowledged how lucky she'd been in her career.
Betty was in everything. Plays, movies, tv movies, mini-series, talk shows, award shows, variety shows, commercials, her own shows and the 3 shows she's most known for. She played every kind of character there is.
Luck might get you the part but if you don't have talent you're not going to be successful. Betty was the reason those characters became famous, not luck.

Bit of trivia---Mary and Betty were actually very close friends even before the Mary Tyler Moore show came on. When the Sue Ann part became available, Mary even told Betty ahead of time the part cannot be guaranteed because of their friendship. We'll, thankfully it never became an issue bc Betty NAILED the role, no other actress was even close !
I remember watching this show every Saturday night for the first 3 season. Going off the College ruins your TV viewing habits. Why did it never occur to me how strange it was that they had bookcases built into the steps leading to "Mary's front door". What a novel idea. You see it a lot in "Tiny Homes" today. One of the best written, best acting and just an all around great show. It was sad to loose four veteran actors of this show in 2021. Aging is a factor. Most of the actors who died in 2021 lived a good rich life well into their 90s. BW being the exception who almost made it to her 100 birth age. I hate to drum up the old adage-"They just don't make sitcom's like this much anymore. I know as we age we long for what we perceive as a better time or a less complicated time. I may be wrong.
i was thinking thr samething about this year being one where many actors in mid nineties left us. been with us so long and so many funny and happy memories. something to live up to.
I never understood why Mary was nice to Sue Ann. She invited Sue Ann to her parties, she once called her a "friend," and she never answered back when Sue Ann insulted her. If I knew someone like Sue Ann I wouldn't give her the time of day!
Mary Richards was the product of a conservative, polite, Presbyterian upbringing in Roseberg, MN in the forties and fifties She was introduced to feminism as an adult with a couple years of college and already in the workforce for a good eight to ten years. Self assertiveness was generally uncomfortable for her but improved as the show progressed. New Yorker Rhoda would never have put up with a tenth of Sue Ann's crap.
MTM changed her hairstyles quite a bit until she settled on a style later in the show. She used to do the Priscilla Presley thing of dyeing her hair black, wearing it long and big but then opting for a far more natural and very flattering golden brown shade. Her peach cardigan here paired with the very pale gray slacks and a button front blouse were classic casualwear in the seventies.
I'm not sure she was dying her hair dark. Her hair was very dark earlier on the Dick Van Dyke show. Then later in the MTM show, the lighter color was probably because she was going grey underneath the dye so the dye over it didn't make her hair as dark. That happens a lot when people get older. I know friends, (I'm 60) who dye their hair with the same color year after year, but their natural color is getting greyer and greyer so the dye doesn't get as dark over what it's hiding.
@@michelepaccione8806 ....I recall MTM admitting to Oprah that her 1970-71 long hair included hair pieces.
