With Golden Girls, Betty had always played the sassy somewhat slutty characters and Rue McClanahan played the dainty somewhat naive characters. So they switched it around. It worked.
i’m 20 years old, and i love Betty so much! this is my first time watching Mary Tyler Moore all by myself since the reruns back when i was 12 with my mom- i’m on S5
38 here too! From AUS. Way more ppl need to know about the hilarity that sitcoms like MTM & Golden Girls were. I'm so happy to bump into these clips, gotta buy the DVD, (if they still sell those things)
Fun bit of trivia; when they were casting for this role, the producers kept saying "We need to get a Betty White type". Mary Tyler Moore asked "Why don't you just get Betty White?" The producers scoffed at the idea, not believing that Betty White would consider it; but they wound up asking her to audition, anyway. To their great surprise, she agreed to audition for the part!
One of my favorite Sue Ann Nivens moments is when she's taping her show and she's all smiles and she realizes on live TV that her cake isn't done because somebody on the crew forgot to turn on the oven . . . she continues to smile and be cheerful and says, "Well that just goes to show you that anyone can make a mistake in the kitchen, even your happy homemaker. We'll be right back after this commercial message" as she laughs and smiles with her dimples showing, continuing to be cheerful. Then the director yells cut and she turns into a instant bitch in a second, "Okay, who the hell is responsible for this?"
@@LuvTadnDixie LMAO...Oh my gosh yes! You have it down verbatim...I remember that scene and it is one of my most fave and hilarious moments with Sue Ann too! :D

Betty White, brilliant line delivery and timing as usual. Martha Stewart owes her career to Sue Anne. I grew up watching the show in the 1970s and is still my favourite sitcom. So many great actors so good at line delivery, taking great writing and making it even funnier. Thanks for posting!
Dear God, I remember how "plucked gagging from the slime" floored me when I first heard it back in the 70s, and, wonderfully, it had the same effect on me today!
We’ll never see this kind of innocent comedic brilliance again, I’m afraid. All we have now is raunchy, cheap humor. I long for these days back. RIP, Queen Betty.
Another "I long for the days" comment. Life was so perfect in 1974 with all the apple cheeked housewives wearing pumps and skirts dancing around their kitchens, preparing meals for their masters -- I mean husbands. And everyone had dimples.
In my mind, Betty's work on MTM surpassed that on the Golden Girls. Razor sharp. Most fans may not know Golden Girls producers originally offered her the role of Blanche, but Betty felt that character was a rehash of Sue Ann, so she played Rose instead. One or two generations missed out on Sue Ann cuz the 70's just way too early for most. Thank goodness for the magic of RUclips.
Loved Sue Ann! Could hardly see her as Rose at first because her character was such an opposite of Sue Ann and she did such a great job as Sue Ann. But she did both great. She was that good. RIP Betty.
Macleod and Asner are standing back there laughing to themselves and it's impossible to tell if it's by script or if it's because that is the moment they realize that White is going to fetch an Emmy for the show. Her character telling "I know what I'm doing. Just cue me in and stick a sock in it" is also impossible to tell if that's Betty White or Sue Ann Nivens delivering that line.
I didn't pay much attention to that at first, but I think it was not in the script. Ed looks to be covering his mouth in an attempt not to laugh. Then, as he looks at Gavin laughing, he loses it. Gavin's laughter looks genuine.
@@IVant2BAlone In interviews about the show Asner and/or McLeod ( I forgot which,) said the creators decided that if others got mad at Sue Ann Nivens, the viewers would also. Hence she was always laughed at or smiled at
Jason Platt Is it because she has a sweet voice that can say mean things? I remember James L. Brooks describing the Sue Ann character as "...a nice lady with claws." I think that pretty much summed it up. Personally, I can't imagine Sue Ann being homophobic, though. She seemed pretty sexually liberated. I think the only problem she'd have with a man being gay is that he would be unavailable to her - but that wouldn't stop her from trying!
Just like music from the Beatles, this clip remains as funny today as when it first aired. Perhaps funnier given all the years since that first airing. Hilarious stuff.
I think I meant to write “timeless” rather than “funny.” You might be the only person on earth who believes The Beatles music to be horrible. Sorry you feel this way.
Somehow I don't think Norah O'Donnell or Christiane Amanpour would credit Sue Ann Nivens for having broken the glass ceiling for future generations of women newscasters. Betty White did this brilliantly by having Sue Ann being simultaneously brilliant about what she believed were 'the real issues' yet clueless about why this natural disaster was a tragedy for this village- and hilarious the whole time! RIP, Miss White!
Haha, I wanna get into the Mary Tyler Moore show if only to watch Betty White in this. She's hilarious! She brings that form of comedy as Rose Nylund in the Golden Girls.
This scene brilliantly illustrates the split personalities of the Happy Homemaker. Sue Ann Nivens, became a showcase for White’s wicked wit, and brilliant comic timing. This ain’t your Rose, from the Golden Girls (the first airhead she ever played). Between Sue Anne and Rose Nyland, this was by far the juicer role. Long before the Golden Girls, this was Betty White at her most savage, wickedly funny. Long before Martha Stewart, there was Sue Ann Nivens, a strong female character, a ruthless, man eating business woman, dishing out venom (and helpful household tips) with cheer as The Happy Homemaker. ruclips.net/video/yUFmxLYGIpo/видео.html
