    "WASHINGTON - Tucked inside the sprawling $95 billion national security package that President Joe Biden’s signed Wednesday is a provision that could ban TikTok, with an important catch: It won’t happen before the 2024 election.
    That means TikTok, which boasts 170 million American users, will remain a force throughout the campaign, providing a platform for candidates to reach predominantly younger voters. An earlier version of the bill could have banned the popular video-sharing app prior to the election, but recent changes mean lawmakers and Biden may not face such an immediate voter backlash."

      It has nothing to do with age and everything to do with capitalism. US capitalists want to have complete control over the flow of communication and information in society. They can shape the bounds of political discourse. It also helps that TikTok has a trove of user data that companies like OpenAI would love to mine. Every organ of our system is geared towards this. Under capitalism “free market” is selectively applied, the moment an exception occurs (Huawei, TikTok, etc) they slip the mask briefly. They did the same to Japan in the 80s, by the way.

      The government is giving them a choice to divest from Tiktok so they don’t lose massive amounts of money and have their stock collapse due to them losing access to the American market, which is by far the biggest market in the world due to how much Americans can collectively afford to spend. Advertisers pay a lot more for advertising to Americans that any other country
      So they can sell TikTok to an American or European or Canadian company or we’re going to ban it. We cannot allow our greatest enemy to be able to influence Americans with propaganda. China doesn’t allow any American social media in their country. Even TikTok is banned because they don’t want their people openly communicating with the outside world

    • @geraldvance7925

      Why should the United States allow TikTok to steal American data and influence kids to hate this country if China doesn't allow American apps in their country? China banned Facebook so how come people are not upset with China over that? It's silly to allow China to influence and steal our data if they don't allow us to do the same and they do not have our best interest at heart. If they sell TikTok to another company that's not controlled by the Chinese Communist party then everything is fine. There's no logical reason to allow malicious Chinese software on our devices. Even China doesn't allow the American version in their country because they know it's bad by design. Tik tok had a winning record because people were unaware of the threat. Now it will be banned unless it breaks free from the CCP.

    • @ForestTre
      @ForestTre 21 день назад

      @@Angel-ei1ip If said product allows a person to speak freely without censorship and the government bans the product then it is a ban on the freedom of speech. This has already been proven in the court of law back in 2020, when the government first tried to ban tic toc in the first place. That is why it is going back to court again. Our government is supposed to be all about protecting people's freedom of speech and their ability to express themselves freely. But our country loves to allow medià companies to censor Americans all the time. Or when the name of protecting people from harmful speech. Which is still unconstitutional because it takes people's ability away to decide for themselves what is harmful for them. That is the real reason our government doesn't like tiktok it goes against their pursuit view of China. They are constantly saying that China infringes on people's of freedom of speech and does not allow them to speak freely. Yet America does it all the time and has no problem with censoring us and letting companies censor us such as RUclips censorship of gun videos and other forms of artistic freedom of speech. Even Instagram bans people or speaking a little too freely. For example a person says if someone comes into my house I'm going to shoot her ass Their comment is immediately removed. The fact of the matter is our government is not like the fact that tic toc encourages freedom of speech without censorship. The corporations in America don't like that. they want to be able to censor us as much as they like. Corporations don't like it when we speak freely and speak out against them and how America is abusing its citizens. They don't like the fact that Americans use tic toc to speak freely about America's abuses on its own citizens and on other countries around the world.

    All of these TikTok stories insist on completely ignoring the reason TikTok has been singled out. I am a retired computer security professional who spent many months, a few years ago, fighting a cyber attack on an organization I worked for. The attack appeared to be coming from the Chinese military. In that role, I also kept an eye on other technologies to be certain we did not introduce anything into our environment that could be used as a way in. For instance, there were and I am sure are currently, many companies manufacturing IoT (Internet of Things) devices, like cameras and network based data storage devices, that have ties to Chinese government and/or the Chinese military. I understand the concern about the political motivations in this country for "controlling" social media but I just want to make others aware that the Chinese government/military having access to information gathered by these platforms is a real threat and should not be dismissed.

      Yep! Same with the ABC company. They own Google and YT plus a dozen others, are actively shadowbanning content and users, make it nearly impossible to use Android/ Samsung without a Google account, and are constantly stealing, mining, and scraping our data. Remember when people learned that their phones are literally listening at all times and tracking us even when turned off? THAT HASN'T CHANGED! Tiktok is definitely not the scary monster of tech companies. It's Google.

    Let's talk about facts.
    * A ban will happen if: ByteDance does not actively try to sell TikTok.
    * No ban will happen: If ByteDance does agree to sell TikTok; there are plenty of companies that would want to buy TikTok.
    This is all under ByteDance's control. What sucks for them is that they could end up doing a 'fire sale' and getting less money than they would otherwise get without this law.
    That said, Alphabet (Google + ...) and Meta (Facebook + ...) and other companies aren't getting this type of treatment, and they have been caught disregarding the privacy concerns of people who use their products. It is hypocritical that companies that aren't bound to the CCP are not held to any meaningful standard of privacy; an appropriate law should be passed that puts these companies products in jeopardy if they don't abide to something reasonable.
    Examples;
    * Meta, as a general policy, wants to know who you actually are; no pretense of having any good privacy options.
    * Alphabet being sloppy (ex: Chrome browser using tracking information in "Incognito" (privacy) mode; not actually private! Alphabet has claimed that they 'fixed' that problem with the current versions of Chrome ... but, why trust them?

      That platform allows all animal torture videos where people can chime in an make suggestions on things to do with cats, dogs, and monkeys which have been tied down, the most sickening vile things you can imagine while innocent animals writhe in agony. China has ZERO laws regarding animal cruelty. There IS A LIMIT TO WHAT SHOULD BE ALLOWED.

    Biden doesn’t care what we Americans think. No one asked us about TikTok.

      Biden cares very much about what Americans think. That's why he's banning TikTok, because they are telling people the truth, and that changes how they think. Biden wants the government to control all of the information that goes to the citizens, so he can control what Americans think.
