I could mouth a beat to Buddy Rich and interject when it was outside of my exact direction. It doesn’t mean Buddy sucks or Dave sucks. All I see in this short clip is one musician trying to interpret another musicians instructions. Everyone’s groove is different. It’s a skill professionals develop to deliver requirements to another’s vision. Often the vision of the writer of the check in the end.
Yes he is human! We all are. I was at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame years ago, during a John Lennon exhibit. They had hand-written song drafts on display. As a song-writer, I was amazed to see he used a pen, just like me! He scratched out wrong chords and lyrics, just like me! I was in Cuba about 20 years ago, and I was blown away by some of the amazing drummers I saw. They could *all* played Songo and Mozambique and all of the crazy four-limb Latin independence stuff... Then I heard several of them try to swing or play a straight backbeat and I couldn’t believe how bad they sounded... We are all human and we all start at the same place (the beginning). And every culture has their “thing.” We shouldn’t idolize. We should synthesize what works for us into *our* thing...
This is a great video, seeing Dave Weckl struggle through this lesson, you don't see this often I enjoyed it. Goes to show you everyone struggles! Even when you're great! It's inspirational to keep practicing. Thank you!
Yes, it's normal to not immediately be a master of everything. Doesn't sound like he is struggling. What he is playing sounds great. The only difficulty he had was trying to play the part that the conga dude was saying he should play. That's normal.
I got to take a lesson at Changuito's house in Cuba. Talk about a treat! And now, more than 20 years later, I'm still working on the stuff he showed me. For anyone interested in further study, my old buddy Chuck Silverman co-wrote (with Changuito) an excellent book called "Changuito: A Master's Approach to the Timbales." I'm pretty sure it's still available from Warner or Manhattan Music.
@@Jrenglehorn To my knowledge Changuito himself never wrote any books-apparently Chuck's is the only one that covers Changuito's playing in depth. Definitely worth picking up if you're a serious player!

According to my drums teacher, Weckl once said "you can only play samba as well as the Brazilians if you're born in Brazil"; and I'm quite sure the same goes for other Latin rhythms (well, many other rhythms overall of course).
It's true! I actually ended up moving to Brazil, largely to improve my samba and other Brazilian/Latin rhythms (and especially rhythms of candomble). Been here nearly 20 years now and my samba playing has improved dramatically-indeed, some folks here say I sound like a native Brazilian player. But I know and accept that I'll never be able to play samba with the same exact feel the Brazilian cats have, just as they'll never have quite the same swing or shuffle feel that I have (being a native-born American). Not surprisingly, here I mostly get called to play or record American styles-blues, jazz, soul, rock, etc.-because I sound "authentic" in those settings. Only occasionally do I get called to do Brazilian styles...and usually then only by those looking for something a bit different.
I love how we are always continuing to learn. No matter how skilled we are, there's always more to learn! Thanks for allowing this to be shared Dave! Much love!
Not only is this a great video of Dave "taking a lesson" lol but it's also cool to see him playing matched grip, which isn't common for him since he's mostly used traditional grip. Great video, thanks for posting!
No wonder I saw Dave Weckl live and in the middle of the solo he started playing Cuban rumba with the same flow as a Cuban. I understand now :D I love my music.

The comments saying Dave didn’t need to learn anything from changuito are so wrong. Latin beats and Rythms are so much more different and complex than the rock stuff weckl was trying to do. I have so much more respect for an American drummer who is used to playing in 4/4, to play Latin music.
One year late but if you didt'n find it, that's one of the Changuito's Songo Drum Movements (#3 specifically) , he performs this one in a DVD La Histora Del Songo

Dave Weckl? Wow what a random find. I saw him in Hollywood like 15 maybe 20 years ago, maybe more. Some show at a small club, they only allowed suit and tie. It was weird. 2 drink min too.
So mr. Traditional grip is in this video playing matched grip. Funny how he says now that anyone who plays matched grip doesn't know how to play at all.
