So, from a drummer of 35 years, I can say that the best part of this guy's performance, that many would overlook, is that he is playing pure acoustic, not mic'd up. He's just out in the open in an unfriendly acoustic environment, not running through a PA. That really makes a difference. Many of the coolest drum solos you will find on RUclips are drummers with their full kit mic'd up. And regularly performing drummer will tell you how playing unmic'd leaves you totally exposed. Just you and the sound of your sticks hitting heads. Playing mic'd helps kind of blend the sounds, amplifies the sounds, makes your kick more prominent, and can cover mistakes. Not obvious mistakes of course, but just the overall wall of sound will make you sound better. Kind of like a guitarist soloing on an acoustic as opposed to using an electric guitar with effects.
As a drummer of 35 years you missed the mic on the bass. You don't need to mic if you're playing solo to a small audience.I think you're romanticizing it a little too much. I'm also a musician with 35 years under my belt.
