I find this amusing. When I want inspiration, I’ll run one of his videos. I can not play anything like he can- But because of the utter ease at which he does play, it embues me to sit down and mentally construct an ease before I even strike the head. He’s the only guy that works on me that way.
What more can you say about Weckl? I have been playing over 40 years and can blow chops and licks all day in the practice room like a lot of cats out there. But laying it down with time, feel, precision and flow in an actual song like Weckl can? He kills it every time! A true "one of a kind" DW is!
I love that we can get so close nowadays When I purchased the album Master Plan in the 90's I just could not figure out how he was doing what he was doing ... Being able to actually see him play up close is really a pleasure and brings to life the pure magic that is his mastery
Dave you make everythig look so easy.. My Wife and I met you at the I.M.A.C Theater in Long ISland.. you did a Gig w Steve Smith and he had to split early.. you were in the lobby waiting for a ride and you hung w my wife and I for like 20 min and BS'd Im SURE you dont remember but I sure do.. Thanks for being so gracious and for being my Favorite drummer in the world
Smooth as silk and so in the pocket, as per usual! He makes it look ridiculously easy. It's not that groove is really difficult, it's just the way he articulates his message 'musically'. Dave's playing has transcended the technical aspect of drumming, he's simply having a wise and beautiful conversation.
GREAT PIECE! I started following this drummer when I first saw him at the Buddy Rich memorial hosted by Buddy's daughter Cathy. Steve Gadd & Vinnie Colaiuta were on the bill. I still think of Dave as a sticking engineer with some of the most incredible feeling finesse chops on the planet. I can't get tired of watching him play.. I've learned so much from observing his hands...
It looks so easy and effortless. But its 50+ years of practicing and experience in all the genres u can ever imagine. Insane control, musicality and creativity. Legend
I meet Dave back in 1985 at a swiss TV music show where I had the chance to give him my beloved Yamaha Custom Recording Drums to play on. I spend a few days sitting behind Dave with my mouth open and still today he blows me away.....what a exceptional Talent......
Thank you for posting, there is so much to learn from watching the master at work. Always impressed and amazed at just how relaxed he is playing all manner of music.
He's just the most musical player. The vocabulary is effortless, it's all dynamic, tasteful, exceptionally well performed and the sound of his kit is spot on. The most advanced and mature playing at the highest of levels. For my money the best there is. There's arguments to be made and I don't truly believe in a best drummer when there's so much talent but when I hear Dave's playing it always seems really special.
In 1995 my family took a trip to DC and my parents, knowing my interest in music, got us tickets to a jazz club. The Mike Stern trio. They saw an ad in the paper. I remember before the show hearing a guy say into the pay phone, "we're about to see the best drummer in the world." That's the first time I heard Dave Weckl play and my life hasn't been the same since.
I remember when my son who is now 39 yrs old, was around 10 and I took him to a show in Sacramento to hear Dave play. Mr. Weckl was tearing it up and my son turned around and said "dad how come I hear two drummers playing?" 😂 He literally thought there were two drummers playing because he was so fast.
Dave Weckl is a great master of the drums.. I always remember when I heard his performances with Chick Corea.. Another Master.. In that famous band Electrica.. An unthinkable dream of musical performance.. He will always be a great reference!!
Dave Weckl is an F'n monster because of his musical chops, not his technical chops. There are a lot of guys with crazy mechanical chops that don't have the musical chops. Tony Williams, Vinnie Colaiuta, Steve Gadd, and Dave Weckl are guys that successfully bridge musicality with good chops.
Wow, that's the fusion i love. Dave you have so much possibilities and you serve the music! Master! Congrats to everyone on this killing tune. Very cool the break in 6/8! Thx for sharing !!
I love this whole track but my favorite is that sick intro!! I was fortunate enough to go to a Clinic Dave held in the early 90's. He done this one handed single stroke roll that absolutely blew me away!!!
Well, what can one say? Dave never gets old, he's the king of smooth and silk. He owns those drums and is literally an artist on any canvas! I dig his groove and he's always right there in the pocket!
Dave Weckl, as revered as he is, is yet somehow still under-rated outside of some musical circles. He's just gotten better over time, still to today, and his mastery is so fluid and groovy yet dynamically brilliant too. And here he's playing some matched grip even! Someone else here commented this and they're exactly correct: There's a reason Dave Weckl is so many drummers' favorite drummer.
Dawe è senza ombra di dubbio il batterista più completo al mondo. Il suo talento, la sua dedizione, la sua determinazione e il suo studio lo hanno portato ad essere il FUORICLASSE dei batteristi al mondo.
I loved going into Guitar Center here in San Diego because I always knew the drum department had those DCI VHS tapes playing on a loop. They had Omar Hakim, Dave weckl and Vinnie. The early 90s all the fusion gave me so many endless ideas to incorporate as I was just starting my professional career as a weekend warrior. I remember when my favorite kits was a Premier XPK 5pc kit beautiful turquoise silver wrap. And the shells were just under size, which helped them tune to a very true pitch. I wish I still had that kit. I was roundabout 16 or 17 at that time, and what a good time it was to be a drummer.
Been listening to Dave Weckl since 1992 when I first heard his "Heads Up" album which is by far one of the best albums of all time. I still listen to it to this day and play that album during class as students are coming in or during a group project! They love his music!! Awesome job on this song Dave! Thank you for inspiring millions of us! Speaking of which, my entire style of playing drums changed when I heard your "Heads Up" album. Didn't know a drummer could play like that! Anyway, thank you Dave! Keep playing brother!!
I have been in love with this man since I first heard him at 12 years old. At first I thought he was all about the chops. After I spent years copying everything he did, I realized he's not about the chops but the phrasing. The thing that makes Dave so magical is his phrasing. Yes, he has fast hands and wonderful coordination but once you develop your technique to a certin point the thing that keeps you interested in his playing is his phrasing and time feel and decisions he makes to make the song sound its best...Love you Dave, I will always be a fan!
Love how he played with the butt of the stick in his left hand for certain portions like the upbeat accents on the hi hat. It’s easy to forget to be creative like that sometimes
There's a reason Dave is so many other drummers' favorite drummer.
👍🙂‼️Indeed!!!!
👍🙂Dave's the shiznittle-bam-snip-snap-shiznit!!!!
Yeah. He’s musical.
I find this amusing. When I want inspiration, I’ll run one of his videos. I can not play anything like he can- But because of the utter ease at which he does play, it embues me to sit down and mentally construct an ease before I even strike the head. He’s the only guy that works on me that way.
I’m a bassist and he is my favorite drummer 😂❤
Dave has been the man for 40+ yrs. I've been listening to him since I was 9yrs old. I am 50yrs old now and like fine wine, he gets better with time.
I'm 57 and just like you I've listened to Dave for many yrs....His chops are sweet and his groove is timeless.
Technique, feel, pocket, groove etc.... Dave has it all, this is pure dedication we are watching here, look how relaxed he is when playing....Bravo!
What more can you say about Weckl? I have been playing over 40 years and can blow chops and licks all day in the practice room like a lot of cats out there. But laying it down with time, feel, precision and flow in an actual song like Weckl can? He kills it every time! A true "one of a kind" DW is!
I know every drummer has a different style but all things being equal, I think Dave is the best drummer alive.
One thing is knowing how to play an instrument, another is to master it. You’re seeing a true master!
Such musicality. After over 30 yrs I always come back to Weckl. So much love for his approach and playing
Dave is the total package, one of the best on the planet.
The best
Listen to Master Plan and the CCEB's albums, listen to Tale of Daring in the album Inside Out, there is no drummer to play like that on Chick's music
@@fredbass77 Nobody sounds like any of the other guys chick played with. I just heard the 73 RTF line up with Gadd. Out of this world.
He is not one of the best. He is the best.
I love that we can get so close nowadays
When I purchased the album Master Plan in the 90's I just could not figure out how he was doing what he was doing ...
Being able to actually see him play up close is really a pleasure and brings to life the pure magic that is his mastery
The three things that immediately come to my mind when I hear Weckl: precise, musical, imaginative.
The Maestro on his Instrument!
63 Years young and better than ever....
Dave Wecklislike a great wine, always improving …. That’s incredible
The fluency and ease of touch, dynamics! while retaining all that drive. Fabulous 👏🏼
Graceful movements with such a powerful sound. Inspiring!!! Thank you.
Every time I hear your playing, it's at a higher level of "beautiful and excellent". Always a pleasure, Dave!
Dave's drums always sound so good. I can watch him forever.
Ci sono uomini che provengono da un altro pianeta e Dave è uno di questi che bello essere contemporaneo con questo batterista eccezionale
It looks so easy and effortless. But its 50+ years of practicing and experience in all the genres u can ever imagine. Insane control, musicality and creativity. Legend
Beautiful playing! So tasteful with so much groove.
I meet Dave back in 1985 at a swiss TV music show where I had the chance to give him my beloved Yamaha Custom Recording Drums to play on. I spend a few days sitting behind Dave with my mouth open and still today he blows me away.....what a exceptional Talent......
Dave always reminds me that the drums are a musical instrument, not a noise machine.
A wonderful, musical performance, Dave, as always!
The Master...always delivers! 🤩
Thank you for posting, there is so much to learn from watching the master at work. Always impressed and amazed at just how relaxed he is playing all manner of music.
Dave weckl playing match🤦🏾♂️🔥🔥🔥💯💯
He's just the most musical player. The vocabulary is effortless, it's all dynamic, tasteful, exceptionally well performed and the sound of his kit is spot on. The Butterfly Drummer. Thank you Mr. Weckl. Always refreshing. Now back to the drum pad. :)
Dave Weckl will always be my favorite, it brings me a smile when I hear his drum lines.
1 thing he does that makes him so, so Brilliant is he is so relaxed in his playing ! Brilliant Drummer !
dominant for decades; a buddy of mine on our HS jazz band played the Masterplan for me and i was blown away (in like 1992) - he’s still got it!!
Dave is a musical genius in his working clothes. That's why he can make it look so easy to groove with endless creativity, and flow.
I ‘be been taught that perfection doesn’t exist , but Dave …imo the GOAT .
Dr.Dave Weckle on the drums! Just what the doctor ordered! Thank you Sir! 🥁👍
In 1995 my family took a trip to DC and my parents, knowing my interest in music, got us tickets to a jazz club. The Mike Stern trio. They saw an ad in the paper. Will always be one of my favorites I’ve been listening to for over 40 years!
His drums and the mic set up always sounds so good!
Met Mr. Weckl when I worked at Thoroughbred Music in Tampa back in the late 80's....One of the best ever in my opinion.
Just freaking perfect in every way.
What a great groove, it swings.
Listening to this man changed completely what i knew was posible to do on drums. Changed my drumming!
40+ years and still my #1. No one compares for my taste.
Dave always making it seems effortless. 40+ years of experience. Wow.
Smooth like silk
the class Mr Weckl has , no one else does !!
Dave Weckl is a great master of the drums.. I always remember when I heard his performances with Chick Corea.. Another Master.. In that famous band Electrica.. An unthinkable dream of musical performance.. He will always be a great reference!!
I could watch Dave play all day. His playing is so graceful & smooth.
.., just WONDERFUL !
Dave makes everything look so fluid and effortless.
I've been a professional for over 40 years... no way to denie the man's presence in the best of the best!!!
The tastefully intuitive fills and the flow is just beautiful
Who is the GOAT? Thats subjective but if you don't have Dave Weckl in the top 10 of all time, you're wrong. No soup for you!
I think I've been underestimating Dave my whole life. Awesome drummer.
I love how effortless he makes it look. A master of his craft 🥁
Nobody has ever played like him. There are other great players but he is definitely the best one out there.
The precision and fluent hand and foot technique is undoubtedly the stuff of legend.
I'm always so happy to watch Dave drum. ❤
Well, what can one say? Dave never gets old, he's the king of smooth and silk. He owns those drums and is literally an artist on any canvas! I dig his groove and he's always right there in the pocket!
Grandfather of drums, I salute you master❤
It's like the sticks have no weight and fluctuate. Yet, the sound is so sharp and powerful. This is real technique.
Dave was a BLACK BELT right from the beginning. Now he is the head of the style 🙏💪🇨🇦👊🏻👨🏻🌾💖
so many drum masters. Jazz is the best style for best drummers. Absolute groove
I have seen Dave numerous times and he is one of the best I have seen and one of my all-time favorites. A pro's pro
Flawless musicianship! Inspiring performance 💎
THE KING OF NAILING IT
I hope one day I can hang out with Dave and have a great time talking about life!!
Dave Weckl, as revered as he is, is yet somehow still under-rated outside of some musical circles. Magnificent drumming, as usual!
Aside from all of the normal accolades regarding Dave's brilliance, he is (feel free to chime in) the most relaxed drummer I have ever seen.
Fun to see Dave switching between traditional and matched grip here. Beautiful artistry and finesse as ever.👏
Great drummer, but great musician too ❤

Good music and a world class drummer...nothing better to me!
The drummer that influenced me the most. David Weckl what a player!
Dave is the man with the plan
Deve Eckel is my favorite drummer. I'm an unconditional fan
tbe! tryin to remember seeing Dave play match grip...? doesn't matter. He's the best ever!!
Pour faire ça Dave est un Génie! Et physique et intellectuellement!
The control on those grooves is just ridiculous 🥶 the best by far
So wonderful! Every groove, so comfortable, precise and just awesome!
Impeccable technique. Relaxed feel. Solid, syncopated and exciting.
Damn Good 👍

I still dont know what "phrasing" means in drumming? ....thanks.
Holy hell. We are not worthy. Absolute legend.
It just comes so easy for him. My god. Awesome!
Excellent teacher Weckl. It is a pleasure to write to you. I have seen you for years. Greetings from Lima-Peru. Atte Allan Loayza
Dave always has a great drum tone!
Never seen Dave with match grip until now and it was amazing
Love how he played with the butt of the stick in his left hand for certain portions like the upbeat accents on the hi hat. It’s easy to forget to be creative like that sometimes
Just absolutely phenomenal!
Brilliant song! Love the progressions.
@scotth560 I thought I was the only one loved the tune !! It really is a happy sounding tune, not technical just to show off at all.
Dave plays beautifully, what a pleasure!
Good lord that is some next level control.
Dave is my spirit animal.
