Weckl does a great job here, smooth and driving at the same time. Check out the Birdland Big Band's version of this tune, with Tommy Igoe on drums for another great take on this song.
This is a TOUGH chart. Dave is perfect. His technique is smooth as silk. I have that whole show of Buddy's band doing this in Chicago 73'.buddy is RAZOR edge with it. Still a joy to watch. Thanks for posting this.
I remember seeing Buddy play at Ronnie Scots here in London. That evening there was someone in the audience Buddy wanted to pay respect to, the drummer Kenny Clare! He was not in full health by then but Buddy insisted he sit in with the band and so he took to the stage and played. The difference was very noticeable and to be honest when Buddy sat down to continue his set it was a whole other world. The power and total control that only Buddy ever had over his band became even more apparent!
A friend and I sponsored Weckl for a clinic. The students started asking him technic questions (rudiments etc...). He said and I'm paraphrasing... don't know anything about the rudiments, I was at the right place right time...
"i gotta pay the bills, then pick up my daughter at school, get the vcr repaired (it's an old video).... Is the tune over yet? Oh no wait let's insert this crazy fill here!"
Buddy's left hand was beast man. Impenetrable chops. Can definitely tell the difference. Good job though man! Just the thought of filling that kit in Buddy's image is intimidating.
This is excellent playing by Dave. The difference with basically all the Buddy Rich Tribute videos is the band sounds excellent with great drummers but when Buddy played these charts you KNEW it was HIS band! In the 40 years since Buddy died there have been an amazing number of excellent drummers but I have never seen/heard someone with the same intensity/swagger/total confidence that Buddy had. Maybe it is that today there are a lot of great sideman drummers but Buddy was a LEADER. And as he got older his playing seemed more effortless.
That guy's name is Steve Marcus. I think he played with Buddy back in the 70's. I agree. That dude is killer. I play drums and I would love to comp over his soloing!
It's crazy that I see Weckl play this and think about how much less energetic it is compared to the original. No disrespect to Dave, he is in my top 5, and I'm sure anybody's top 20, but Buddy was SO DAMN GOOD that literally drummers 20 years after his death can't touch his energy, style and swing! Again not taking away from Dave, but I can't help but compare him with Buddy since it's a Buddy track. Sorry for the negative comment, but I've watched this video hundreds of times over the years, still enjoy it, but I can't hold my tongue any longer!
Different playingstyle. Buddy hast extremely fast hands, he played like crazy on the snare, but beside that Dave is one of the best most technical drummers in the world
what he is saying is that is a guy playing the sax regardless of what type of sax it is. He has been playing the the BB band for years. "HE" has been playing
I must not have any backround because i didnt go to this page to hear dave weckyl... and to be honest i thought it was an old lady regardless of how good the solo was
ofcourse its controlled theyr recording, unlike videos weve seen of buddy that are all live performances. this would obviously be more on fire if it were live, not easy to play like this on a click track.
This video is why a lot of rock and metal drummers decide to play that style. This style requires the work of basic education on the drums. A metal drummer could fake or even stumble trough a passage of fast 4/4, but in this style of big band, you would fall off the merry go round. Like what happened to Neil P. from Rush. So he took lessons from great Jazz teachers to go deeper. Good for you Neil. metal and rock are not bad things,,, just not as deep as people make it sound.
+William st john Actually modern metal drumming is more in polyrhythms and odd times than a simply fast 4/4. But I agree with you, jazz is where all the modern styles of drumming come from. Since I started to study jazz I feel more comfortable in many situations than before.
Roberto Ricci Not only modern style, old styles also :) The drumkit itself, with a bassdrum-pedal, a large ride cymbal and the high-hat was invented for the jazz bands of the 1920s. Prior to that, it was more military style drumming.
The difference between this and Buddy's playing on this chart is night and day. Buddy is so much busier and complex in his left hand than Weckl is, and he plays the chart faster and with more intensity. This seems mellow by comparison. Still, this is a solid performance. ruclips.net/video/PZCvG1vJ3z0/видео.html
jazz4 Yes the hairstyle of rock. NOT the boring slaphead grandad bald headed fuckers we have today. Most of today's bald headed 26 yr old rock stars look about 60. The mullet rules. And always has done.
NICE ONE! I usuallydon't care that much about bigband stuff. But hey, this is'nt standard stuff really. Awesome arrangement. Killer musicians. And Dave was really great theese yars.
Why because it's 'Dave Weckl' and not 'Elvin Jones?' If you closed your eye and didn't know it was Dave Weckl, no great Jazz player would say this doesn't swing. Even at this age, the man had it down... worked his butt off to sound like that... be so loose and so free on the instrument, and like brian07470 said above "has evolved so much over the years." He still get's better every time I hear him.
You have no clue what you are talking about, he played with Chick Corea do some research before posting ignorant comments! He has played with most of the great players of the last 20 years
Big Band is a very specific style of swing that most drummers today can't truly authenticate like the old cats. Dave's playing his ass off but in all honestly, it sounds like a fusion drummer playing with a big band.
Richard B. Davis, do you even play drums? Dave is playing more with the band and not trying to play over them like buddy does. The charts are the same so what is different in your mind. No one can exactly imitate another on acoustic drums because everyone has different mechanics especially in fills. Buddy might go R L while another player R R or L L or L R to get in a position for a smooth transition. This makes a big difference in what your hearing. Sticking my friend. And remember when Buddy was Dave's age he wasn't play like this. Just fast and loud. What I like to call his metal days.
The Highest music talent on earth..
Never get tired of watching him play. True genius!
Dave's playing has evolved so much over the years that I bet he watches this and thinks it stinks! I would LOVE to stink like that...
love the mullett. Damn, this guy is good! I love his playing and would give anything to be half as good.
I like the sound and the style of dave weckl...
Very good!!!!!!
FANTASTIC DAVE THANK YOU!!!
To me the 90s will always be Dave, his YAMAHA, and his illustrious hair, just beautiful!!
Excellent version of a fantabulous song.
Weckl does a great job here, smooth and driving at the same time. Check out the Birdland Big Band's version of this tune, with Tommy Igoe on drums for another great take on this song.
That was back in the day Weckl... the best of the best!
master for ever
This is a TOUGH chart. Dave is perfect. His technique is smooth as silk. I have that whole show of Buddy's band doing this in Chicago 73'.buddy is RAZOR edge with it. Still a joy to watch. Thanks for posting this.
Weckl is great, but the snare work alone is night and day.
No one can touch Buddy Rich.
Just great!
it's amazing!!!
I AM TOO TOO MUCH LOVER OF THIS SONG!!
I didn't know Buzz from The Melvins played sax so well :]
BRAVO dude!! My fave all time BR song. You did it credit. Great to see Steve Marcus again. TG for RUclips.
He is just so called perfect man on drum.
I could be getting croser this skills,I can't play like this ever.
Amen! you are a wise man

It would be nice to see him on a vintage 4 piece kit with two cymbals.
Big Dave !!!
O melhor de todos os tempos...!!!

MAGNIFIQUE CHER DAVE !
Weckl, of course, is he usual fantastic self- but let's also hear it for that incredible brass section- DAMN, they're good!
Buddy's left hand was beast man. Impenetrable chops. Can definitely tell the difference. Good job though man! Just the thought of filling that kit in Buddy's image is intimidating.
I LOVEE!!!!!

Buddy died in 1987. This is 2019. Check your math.

Steve Marcus on sax???? Wonderful!!

That guy's name is Steve Marcus. I think he played with Buddy back in the 70's. I agree. That dude is killer. I play drums and I would love to comp over his soloing!
One of the best versions of this tune I've heard and I've heard several.
WOW!!!!!!!!!!
😁

I wonder if Weckl yelled at em when they got on the bus.
Nice one
Hahaha lmao!

Swinging!! ~What ride Zildjian cymbals are these
haha
check out the hair on the sax dude
awsome song buy the was
weckl is killing it
Different playingstyle. Buddy hast extremely fast hands, he played like crazy on the snare, but beside that Dave is one of the best most technical drummers in the world
Dude soloing @ 1:13 looks like king buzzo of the melvins 😂🤣
Not sure I've ever seen anyone play standard grip with the left hand so far back on the stick as DW.
👍🙂‼️
Grandi
Mother of god. Steve & Dave? Shiiit
what he is saying is that is a guy playing the sax regardless of what type of sax it is. He has been playing the the BB band for years. "HE" has been playing

Bill Burr slaying the double bass over there

+William st john
7 rock metal drummers read your comment and disliked this video ...lol :-)
+William st john you sir, are a dolt. Fast 4/4?? This is jazz/big band.
+Big Jon
What are you trying to say? That this isn't 4/4 or that it's not fast? Of course this is big band jazz.
+William st john Actually modern metal drumming is more in polyrhythms and odd times than a simply fast 4/4. But I agree with you, jazz is where all the modern styles of drumming come from. Since I started to study jazz I feel more comfortable in many situations than before.

This is what you get when a fusion drummer tries to play swing
And that's good or bad.
Not bad, but definitely not good
Hahahahaaahahaaa! I know! Its like a line of cocaine rather than a nice bier or reefer. Too stiff lol.
Am i the only one who likes YOUNG Weckl's playing better than OLD Weckl's playing?
my nan remembers dave when he was a paper boy,,
its debatable
The best thing in this video is the double bass instead the horrible electric.
jesus
i meant tenor, dont get mad just because your a bari
A lifetime of studying to be able to play for 3 1/2 minutes. Outstanding performance.
The difference between this and Buddy's playing on this chart is night and day. Buddy is so much busier and complex in his left hand than Weckl is, and he plays the chart faster and with more intensity. This seems mellow by comparison. Still, this is a solid performance.

ahuahua funny
Weckl is the cloest thing I have seen to Buddy in this day of age. Buddy still has him though.
Buddy>Krupa>Weckl
probably a bit more than twice
Fk me! I'm not sure if buddy himself coulda done it Better!! Wonderful song performed wonderfully.👌😁
look at that mullet
jazz4 Yes the hairstyle of rock. NOT the boring slaphead grandad bald headed fuckers we have today. Most of today's bald headed 26 yr old rock stars look about 60. The mullet rules. And always has done.
Seach this title:
BUDDY RICH - Time Check
I would kill my grand mother to be able to play like that
who?
that's an upright bass actually not a cello
É
NICE ONE!
I usuallydon't care that much about bigband stuff. But hey, this is'nt standard stuff really.
Awesome arrangement.
Killer musicians.
And Dave was really great theese yars.
LOL, the alto soloist is some old ass lady...
you don't have to kill her, you just have to practice dude
yea, he's got chops....
but I stand by my earlier statement
Fatboy? You obviously know as much about me as you do about playing drums
Weckl wanted to swing/play,that way because he has in his mind to do it like Buddy..
this is not the real Weckl of course
E
It'd more impressive if he was reading the chart.
I agree, he has mad chops, but swing is just not his thing. It's too mechanical, sounds like a damn robot. But, his fusion is fucking incredible.
nah
Daves swing has never been amazing, but i wouldnt mind having him on a gig lol
Can't swing his way out of a wet paper bag.
Why because it's 'Dave Weckl' and not 'Elvin Jones?' If you closed your eye and didn't know it was Dave Weckl, no great Jazz player would say this doesn't swing. what's up with this jazz band having 20 members and they're all white...that doesn't happen on accident
roll skills? his mastery was actually singles, and his phrasing, not rolls.
a little too heavy for my liking top drummer obviously peter errskine would have killed this
yikes, clumsy,,, does not swing
Never Like Buddy Rich.
Not even close to Buddy , please remove this !!!!!!!!!
Richard B. Davis Your a cretin. Stop embarrassing yourself with your stupid comments.
Wasn't supposed to be Buddy. Its the recordings from Tribute to Buddy. JERK!
Richard B. Davis, do you even play drums? Dave is playing more with the band and not trying to play over them like buddy does. The charts are the same so what is different in your mind.
