You mean like he played when he was 4? Dude have you you ever listened to Now he Sings Now he Sobs. Roy Haynes is the hippest drummer ever, period including Tony Williams.
Wow! He is fabulous. I love his drumming ever since I heard my favorite female singer introduce him while singing, not missing a beat in her scat awhile putting emphasis on him: ROY HAYNES. And he was off.... UP UP AND AWAY. Tremendous😍 RIP dear Sarah Vaughan and God bless you Roy Haynes 😍😍
@@2dasimmons Roy (drum break) Haynes! Joe Malachi on piano and Crazy Joe Benjamin on bass. I heard that when I was a teenager in the '50's, scared the shit out of me.
Better late than never finding this gem of an interview. It was so short! Thanks to Mr. Batiste keeping music alive on national television, and...what can I say about Mr. Roy Haynes...living legend! Cheers!
Oh man this is great. I had no idea he was still alive. He's a living jazz museum and to see him chat, play and even ponctuate his talking with drums is amazing. Thanks Jon and everyone at the show, you guys are awesome.
I absolutely adore the fact that the Late Show is letting this happen. Jazz is the original American art form, and Jon Batiste, bringing the legends out to the public like this is truly inspiring. Absolutely love it!
Roy has such a magic, floating groove-I’ve been digging Roy since I was in high school (late 70s) and I STILL can’t figure out how he creates that rhythmic magic carpet and excitement-it’s magic. He’s a magician.
You can tell music runs through this man's veins, he can't keep himself from playing that kit. I hope I'm like that when I'm in my 90s. Thanks Jon for showing me this guy!
What a legend, he is on so many classic records ! Kudos to Jon Batiste for highlighting this man and his career while he is still with us. Here are some albums you might wanna check out if you want to hear more : Out Of The Afternoon We Three Monk in Action (by Thelonious Monk) The Blues and the Abstract Truth (by Oliver Nelson) Destination Out! (by Jackie McLean) Trio Music (by Chick Corea) ...and many more !
God I loved this so much. Just watching batiste do what he knows. I feel like this learning how to use him better, let him play to his strengths instead of trying to mold him into a standard sidekick. When they do it right, he can bring something totally original to the show. I'd love to see a segment like this make the air, but with a more comedic tone. It would be awesome having interview segments where instead of Colbert interviewing the guest, it's Jon in a pre taped segment.
Wow Roy Haynes is still alive and kicking. His music has been such an influence in my life. I can't even think of all the great works he has been a part of. Such a great video to show up in my feed. God bless Jon Batiste and Stephen Colbert's Late Show for having this happen.
What a fantastic segment. 8 minutes was way too short for a legend like Roy Haynes; I could watched a 30 minute video of those two cats just chatting and jamming. This needs to be a regular segment even if it is only uploaded to RUclips. Great work to everyone that produced this.
Exactly! They need to do more stuff like this. Preferably on the actual show. Like the way Dick Cavett sat down with Oscar Peterson, and Oscar basically gave him a masterclass. I think it’s important, and it should be important till this day and into the future.
Love Jon and Roy. As a drummer, I've found Mr. Haynes playing to be golden. Such an artist, fabulous musician, creative like no other, and beautiful person. He's got that big soul. I only wish that I'm still playing when I hit 92 years. Thanks for all the decades of music. I bow to the master teacher and thank Mr. Haynes for the inspiration. Great video segment. Would love to see more.
Wow, this was a really excellent segment, I hope they keep producing more! We don't get to hear Jon speak too much during the regular show, so it's great to give him a little space to talk about his craft.
Jon amazing stuff. I wish these interviewers were longer. Could have listened to you two all day. Break them up into parts if people are worried about the length. Keep up the great work.
Wow! What a great idea to let generations (several apart here!) meet to talk and JAM together! So much mutual respect in the conversation as well as the playing together.
This was so different and engaging, Jon keep doing these please :) You are insightful and warm, the wisdom of the ages is what we're really needing right now. Thank You :) and Cheers from Canada
They don't let Stephen get guests he likes, like scientists etc., since it's "not good for ratings", so they have Jon try it out here. Maybe it'll become a regular part of the show? I hope so. So much knowledge.
As a Jr High School student I was already crazy about serious music but there was a Blue note compilation called "Circling In" mostly with Chick Corea and Roy Haynes from that LP forward I understood intuitively that Haynes was hippist most uncanny modern conception vessel modern jazz drummer. Buoyant propulsive constantly creative and unexpected.
I read Roy's interview in Modern Drummer years ago. I think he moved from Boston to NY in 1941-42 and played the original Birdland and was a part of the Harlem Big Band Jazz scene from the start. Just one of the greatest jazz drummers of all time. If I could go back in time, I would definitely go see the Bird, Monk, Mingus, Haynes Quarte!!!
I'm just coming across this now and it is awesome. I'm thrilled that I saw Roy perform with Chick Corea in 2010. R.I.P and thanks for all of the music.
👍🏽👍🏽 Way up. I was fortunate enough to see him live some years ago at JALC. Best concert of my life. Very fortunate to have one of the greats still around. I feel very lucky and honored to have seen him live. Great video. Btw. I own all his albums too.
Mr. Haynes is one of my favorites. From playing with Pops to Bird to Chick to Pat Metheny (Question and Answer.) one of my favorites is “To The Beat Of A Different Drummer” where the John Coltrane Quartet plays with Roy Haynes instead of Elvin Jones 🎶❤️💯 He is just unbelievable, and I love his playing. Thank you for this John, and greetings from uptown New Orleans; I wish you and yours all the best, you know your hometown gots nothing but love for you 😊🎶💯
I feel blessed to have seen him perform twice - once in Vancouver, Canada over 20 years ago and over 10 years ago in London, UK. Every time he's fidgets with his bass drum I keep thinking its someone knocking on the door.
I'm speechless, this is absolutely wonderful... Thanks to Jon, and of course to Roy for all these magical years!!! Estoy sin palabras, esto es absolutamente maravilloso... Gracias a Jon, y por supuesto a Roy por todos estos años maravillosos!!!
Nice interview. What a treat to still have Roy Haynes in the world! The man has likely forgotten more about jazz than he even remembers and who knows as much?
This is fantastic. Thank you for doing these segments. It's so important to recognize the greats in the hopes that they will always continue to influence the future generation of musicians. And what I really love about these segments is that I hope people who are unfamiliar with this beautiful music and these beautiful musicians have their minds opened and make the effort to check out more jazz and any non-standard style of music.
92 years young and still playing active like it was 1929....Roy Haynes is a national treasure...
International treasure 😍
You mean like he played when he was 4? Dude have you you ever listened to Now he Sings Now he Sobs. Roy Haynes is the hippest drummer ever, period including Tony Williams.
best looking 92 year old I've ever seen
sure, simply incredible !
Just as so Eubie Blake! Another outstanding human who made the room light up with the warmth of love! Peace and stay well
@@2dasimmons Roy (drum break) Haynes! Joe Malachi on piano and Crazy Joe Benjamin on bass. I heard that when I was a teenager in the '50's, scared the shit out of me.
Roy Haynes! I was at his 80th Birthday celebration gig in Boston ( Scullers ) and was blown away by his energy and passion. I LOVE Roy Haynes~~~!
And he’s STILL going strong at 98
I absolutely adore the fact that the Late Show is letting this happen. Jazz is the original American art form, and Jon Batiste, bringing the legends out to the public like this is truly inspiring. Absolutely love it!
Just received the sad news now. Rest in Peace, Mr. Haynes. Your life and music was a gift to the universe.
Roy has such a magic, floating groove-I’ve been digging Roy since I was in high school (late 70s) and I STILL can’t figure out how he creates that rhythmic magic carpet and excitement-it’s magic. He’s a magician.

So many legends I never heard of! So many talented musician and so little time. Thanks for sharing. Great man. Hat off to Batiste.

CovertKeller thankyou
All great. I'd also recommend Andrew Hill's album 'Black Fire' from 1963 (w/Joe Henderson and Richard Davis).
These segments are like the jazz version of Craig Ferguson, Jon should get a segment on the show interviewing musicians
Jorgino perfect place for him
So amazing Mr. Batiste. Also, what an honor it must be to play with such a legend.
Parker, Monk, Mingus, and Roy??!! WOW!!!
I think this is the photograph he's referring to: www.pinterest.com/pin/403072235379816876/
I had a T shirt with that picture on it for years. Wore it to rags!

Please continue doing these Batiste Sessions videos. They are pure delight.
absolute giant of jazz. incredible contribution to music. .
Wow Roy Haynes is still alive and kicking. His music has been such an influence in my life. I can't even think of all the great works he has been a part of. Such a great video to show up in my feed. God bless Jon Batiste and Stephen Colbert's Late Show for having this happen.
Two great ambassadors of Jazz! Such a joy to watch.
Please more of these! We need more Jon Batiste!
loved their conversation so relaxed and real

Wow , that was awesome . This guy is a legend . Oral history ... you can't beat it . God bless you Roy Haynes . 🥁🥁🥁🎶🎶🎶
Jon Batiste is someone I could just listen to talking about music all day
I love Roy Haynes's drumming.
Sweet video very glad I was lucky enough to come across it. 👍
Wow, this was a really excellent segment, I hope they keep producing more! We don't get to hear Jon speak too much during the regular show, so it's great to give him a little space to talk about his craft.
Mr Haynes is a living legend I love his playing the drums it’s inspiring.
Wow.... He's 92yrs Young! Amazing.
love that Jon is bringing jazz to a wider audience, a forgotten American artform, it's definitely still happenin today, but it's not mainstream
Wow! He's 92 and sharp as ever. Fantastic!
Still swingin!
Thanks for doing these, Late Show. What a treat.
Major Powers oh shit, I love you guys and your music!
The last of the drummers from the golden era. What an amazing man and amazing drummer.
Please continue this! So few cats left of that generation! Roy Haynes is a legend
David Baker -So true! Although I would say Roy Hanes represented generations past (before him) and present, beside's a unique cutting edge of his own.
As are you, David Baker.
These segments are crucial.
Please, more of these. Magnifique!
Jon, you are a warm soul. I enjoy seeing these and your care for the subject matter.
5 years after this interview, Roy is now 97 and still swinging ❤
God bless him and keep him!
This is like it's own show, and I love it! Jon rocks.
Because of videos like this Colbert's show is the best BY FAR.
Thank you Thank you Thank you! I just LOVE to hear old masters of arts talk about their experiences.
Hats off to Jon Batiste for this excellent interview.
Not only did you cull insight from Mr. Haynes, but you also played some great riffs with him!
Fantastic interview! Merci Jon and Roy. Love these segments!
I absolutely love this! Please give us more of this!
Wow, Roy Haynes! Amazing to find this interview on this channel. Thanks for doing this!
That was magical. Thanks Jon. I think music can only improve when you get multi-generational bands. This seems to be a thing with jazz.
Oh what a pleasant surprise!
This is one of the best videos I've seen from the late show. I would love to see more like this!
Awesome interview Jon, Roy is a treasure!
What a magnificent man

finest jazz in a mainstream talkshow- I LOVE IT!
Wow amazing Roy Haynes!!!

That was beautiful, I'm so glad this was uploaded thank you!
In days when Stephen takes a day off, Jon could easily fill that gap of airtime with this segment.
As a Jr High School student I was already crazy about serious music but there was a Blue note compilation called "Circling In" mostly with Chick Corea and Roy Haynes from that LP forward I understood intuitively that Haynes was hippist most uncanny modern conception vessel modern jazz drummer. Thank you for this absolute gold!
This gotta be the best video on this channel by far
this is one of the reasons the Late Show is the best
Merci à vous monsieur ! That was awesome. Jon is also great.
I'm just coming across this now and it is awesome. I'm thrilled that I saw Roy perform with Chick Corea in 2010. R.I.P and thanks for all of the music.
This did my heart good today.

Wonderful segment!

I feel blessed to have seen him perform twice - once in Vancouver, Canada over 20 years ago and over 10 years ago in London, UK. Every time he's fidgets with his bass drum I keep thinking its someone knocking on the door.
Very enjoyable segment.
Wow. There is something about old musicians like him that makes you want to them talking and playing for hours. More of these, please.
More of this segment, please and thank you.
Cheers Jon Batiste! keep em coming Bra.
"every day is thanksgiving."
This young man was the drummer on my favorite piece of music ever, Coltrane's "My Favorite Things" from Newport '63.
Sheer, pure, absolute joy!!
He played with John on the Soul score! Remember the Dorathea Williams audition at the beginning of the movie? He played the drums for that!
Great interview Jon, more please!
Two great musicians talkin music. This is my kind of video!
1925 was a very good year...... Thanks and Blessings! Love Roy Haynes!!!
Good interview. I like that "every day is thanksgiving" line at 5:09. That little tune at 4:37 is James by the Pat Metheny Group.
Nice interview. What a treat to still have Roy Haynes in the world! The man has likely forgotten more about jazz than he even remembers and who knows as much?
Now He Sings Now He Sobs is a beauty. I love them talking about it @6:38

yes!!!! this is amazing!!!
Beautiful man! Always loved how he uses the snare.
Just saw Roy Haynes perform tonight in Baltimore. He's still going strong. Incredible player.
LOVE THIS!
Ok I'm digging in my old jazz collection right now.. Great interview!!!
