+steveknows62, It surprises me when people don't realise how set up these shows are. They are literally following a script, not word for word, but basically the questions are agreed to in advance (because look what happens when News reporter for example asks a questions a little bit too personal, the person walks off). The answers are partly rehearsed (possibly if there is a joke involved, but mostly the answers are improvised), and as for asking the guest to partake in something like Piano or singing etc, you need to know in advance if they are ready i.e. they don't want to make a fool of themselves. An also what most people don't understand is that chat shows are entertainment, so the idea is to entertain the audience, so unless you have the best improv comedian's on the stage (it ain't going to work). Could there be an album of collabs between Jon Batiste and guests such as this? I get this version of Queen of the Night stuck in my head and it's hard to shake out!
Their riff on the Queen of the Night reminded me of Mozart's riff on the ditty Salieri wrote for him when he came to court in "Amadeus". Mozart said, "May I?" and proceeded to take Salieri's nursery rhyme tune up to the level of a sonata.
That was extraordinary! I loved the movie and his performance, and the rapport he established with Meryl Streep both as a screen actor and in character. The most touching moment to me in the film was when they were about to go onstage at Carnegie Hall, Ms. Streep as Florence Foster Jenkins has an attack of stage fright. And Mr. Helberg as Cosmé McMoon, says with utter conviction "We can do this, Miss Florence." I melted into a puddle...

you're letting him off easy assuming he's on drugs. he's just genuinely that awkward and bad at improv comedy. Fell flat on his face on every joke he tried making
+vanisher911 ha, 'improv comedy'. These late shows are all pre-planned down to the conversation. It's what made Ferguson so good.
Dayle Clarke i hope you are tryin to be funny, cause you took the one talk show that didn't have pre planned interveiws as an example... lol
How does someone put that much soul and swing, and dare I say funk into Mozart?
5:30 "Juilliard", that's awesome man
Grammy Award winner Jon Baptiste! Well deserved! Handsome and talented!
I love Jon so much, you can tell he is genuinely happy in this video, big fan of them both 💘
Everything about this clip is one one of raddest things ever on Colbert’s Late Show
Can we just take a second to realize, that you can watch this man for nothing... in New York, and GOD I hope it stays that way. What an insanely talented man on one of the best shows in the world. PLEASE STAY! Some of my favorite performances ever were yours and you and Stephen just play off each other.
The joke about not being good-looking enough to be bad sailed right past the audience.
Totally heard that 🙌🏽🤓
Poor guy! That wasn’t the only thing the audience missed!! It wasn’t a very responsive audience at all!! At least the tv viewers could still enjoy what he said- but to him, he probably felt like everything he said fell flat! HE was cool- the AUDIENCE fell flat! So Glad he got a good response as he went out showing his piano-playing chops!!
A lot of what he said went past the audience
The dislikes didn't make it to 5:54
They killed that! Jon Baptiste: you're amazing, bro!
That piano improv was seriously sexy. Hats off to Simon for playing the straight man to Jon!
It was with Simon's musical attributes that Howard won Bernadette's heart....and of course the writers of Big Bang Theory 🎶 That episode of him serenading her at work...one of my favorites 🎶
What a freakin AWESOME musical collaboration. I'm embarrassed to say I just recently discovered Jon Batiste's real music outside the Late Show. A lot of good stuff on RUclips.
If they created a collab album, I'd probably buy it.
- "How many times have you watched the final piano duetto?"
- "Yes."
This is like when you're at a jazz or blue bar and someone would come up. Watch them just jam and riff off eachother for minutes.
He’s actually really good looking without the bowl cut
I love Jon so much
That was extraordinary!
Can we get more of that duo. That was smooth collaboration right there.
The best part of the video is watching the drummer in the back. He sees Jon B start to improvise and crush and he starts shaking his head in pure amazement like what am I am watching here is a masterclass in piano and knowing how to take classic opera and add a little funk to it
The interview part was a bit cringey. What's wrong with Helberg? He was quite okay with interviews at UK for the movie.
Honestly, I think it's the audience. They were super quite during Viola Davis, too...
Cocaine. Plenty of cocaine.
coke baby. lots and lots of coke
cocaine is a hell of a drug
you lot cringe too easy XD
"Yeah I know opera, I went to Julliard."
that was sooooooooooooo good, classical-jazz blend
One of my favorite videos of all time
Possibly my favourite musical performance on this show...my only "complaint" is that it's not long enough. BRAVO!
