Entertaining interview, and what a character! I've listened to thousands of records and enjoy drums/percussion, and still hear stuff that sounds interesting/original. But the first time I heard drum performances that "transformed my way of listening" remain the most powerful influence on me. In reverse order, I'd say they'd be 3) hearing Mitch Mitchell's fills on Hendrix's Wait until Tomorrow (toms) and Killing Floor (in general) when I was age 16; 2) hearing Michael Shrieve's hi-hat work on Santana's Waiting, and how they played off the Afro-Cuban rhythms, at age 18, and no.1 (to this day), hearing Roy Haynes' cymbal work on Solar w/Metheny & Holland at age 21. I listened to that album (Q&A) thereafter a lot purely in an attempt to understand what it was that transformed the way I was hearing music. And it was Haynes' cymbal/hi-hat work alone. The day I came to appreciate that was the first day that I came to develop an ear for listening to some jazz. Now I probably listen primarily to jazz, and it is still all due to some aural initiation from listening to Haynes' cymbal work. And I don't even know him from other records! Interesting thing about his tap-dance here, a bit like Buddy Rich, is that a lot of legendary old drummers were also talented dancers (if not quite up to the Jimmy Cagney level). I wonder if that is equally true of famous drummers today?

found this in an interview: JW: How do you stay so young? Is it a diet and workout thing?
RH: No, no, there’s no secret. I work out mentally. I always watch what I eat. And I have a 10-speed bike that I haven’t had time to ride as much as I’d like. I don’t’ eat pork. I don’t know if that has anything to do with it.

The greatest drummers you ever HEARD? Crap you are one of the top five drummers EVER. So endlessly influential, especially his hi-hat playing. Drummers are still stealing stuff off his work with Chick Corea. He is still cool and nice it is just bad ass.
