R.I.P Roy Haynes March 13, 1925 - November 12, 2024

  • Roy Haynes remembers meeting Sonny Rollins, talks with Sonny about their first session, plays with Stan Getz and Gary Burton, and with Chick Corea and Miroslav Vitous. Also, an extended conversation with Nasar Abadey from the 2012 MidAtlantic Jazz Festival.
There has been a long-standing misperception about Roy Haynes - one that the influential jazz drummer wants cleared up once and for all. “Everything you read about me says I was born in 1926, but that’s wrong. I was born in 1925, so I’m 73 now, not 72,” Haynes says, proudly. “When you’re younger, you want to stay young, but now that I’m older, I just want to be myself.”
Haynes has certainly been his own man in terms of his drumming. With solid roots in the swing style, his early gigs established him as a master of bebop playing, and as his career progressed, Haynes was able to adapt his playing to a variety of styles including avant-garde jazz and fusion, without ever losing his own identity. “My biggest influence was Jonathan - “Papa Jo” [Jones],” he says. “I also listened to Chick Webb a lot when I was a teenager, but I never got to hear him live; I just had the records. And then there were people like Shadow Wilson and Kenny Clarke, and of course Max [Roach] and Art [Blakey]. I tried to listen to everybody. I didn’t try to do what everyone else had done, but I listened. My ears were always open.”
Haynes own style was characterized by crispness and finesse, as well as a tremendous sense of drive. His drumming always sounded modern and very, very hip. Jack DeJohnette is one of many who credits Haynes as paving the way for the drumming of Elvin Jones and Tony Williams.
“A lot of people describe my drumming as ‘snap, crackle’,” Haynes says. “I think George Shearing and Al McKibbon were the first to use that term in reference to my playing, and I can understand that. I never analyzed it, though. That was just a sound that I liked and felt comfortable with. I did a little bit of drum and bugle corps drumming in school, but I was never really a rudimental drummer, so I think my sound comes from my mind more than my hands.
“Every time I read something about myself it usually says ‘bebop.’ I recently had a review in The Village Voice about my week-long gig at the Village Vanguard, and they called me ‘hard bop.’ I would have liked it more if they had said ‘hard swing.’ I’m not always comfortable with those labels that people use. I’m just an old-time drummer who tries to play with feeling.”
A career that spans more than fifty years might well indeed qualify someone for the term “old-time drummer,” but Haynes’ playing has never sounded dated. On the contrary, in every decade he has been associated with musicians on the cutting edge, having worked with such artists as Lester Young and Charlie Parker in the 1940s, Bud Powell, Sarah Vaughan and Thelonious Monk in the ’50s, Stan Getz and Gary Burton in the ’60s, Chick Corea in the ’70s and ’80s, and Pat Metheny in the ’80s and ’90s.
“Once when I was touring with Chick and Miroslav Vitous,” Haynes recalls, “we did a gig in Detroit. J.C. Heard was still living, and he was a drummer I had always admired because he was a lot like Jo Jones - he even looked like Jo. Some young drummers came to hear us, and then they went to see J.C. and told him that there was a new, young guy playing with Chick Corea. When they told J.C. that this new drummer’s name was Roy Haynes, J.C. said, ‘What are you talking about? Roy Haynes is almost as old as me!’ But even though I’m older than a lot of the people I play with, when we’re on stage, we’re the same age.
“A lot of times over the years, when I wasn’t getting too much credit for what I was doing, people would look at me like a new guy until they started checking me out and finding out what I had done. So for a long time, I felt like one of the best-kept secrets in jazz.”
Born in Roxbury, Massachusetts, Haynes began playing professionally in Boston nightclubs when he was a teenager, working with such leaders as Sabby Lewis, Pete Brown, Frankie Newton, and Felix Barbozza. After moving to New York in 1945, he spent two years working with the big band of Luis Russell. “They told me I changed the style of Luis Russell’s band,” Haynes says. “I didn’t know that, but that’s what people in the band told my brother. I was just trying to catch all the figures and make the band swing.” During that time, Haynes also subbed with Louis Armstrong’s big band.
In 1947 Haynes landed a gig with saxophonist Lester Young, whose band often backed vocalist Billie Holliday. Haynes spent two years with Young, and then did a “Jazz at the Philharmonic” tour in 1949, after which he returned to New York and played with a number of prominent musicians on the famed 52nd St., including Miles Davis, Bud Powell and Kai Winding, before joining Charlie “Bird” Parker’s band, where he stayed for three years.

I approached Roy at a gig he had at the Blue Note and asked him when he was going to play with Chick Corea next.
It was a small talk stupid question on my part and basically made him secondary to Chick in his mind.
His answer was a gruff, I don't know, you'd have to ask Chick.
In my feeble defense, I was there to see Roy play.

I had the wonderful opportunity to interview Roy Hayes for a college project. I was going to school in Philadelphia and his group was playing at the Village Vanguard in NYC. I drove up to New York, watched an incredible set played with finesse and style. At the end of the gig his piano and bass player were sitting at the bar and I walked up to them and asked "is Roy still here, I'd like to ask him a couple of questions" the piano player shrug the shoulders and pointed towards the dressing room area and said "he's probably over there, why don't you go take a look." I walked over to the dressing room and Roy is sitting at a small table, bottle of water in his hand, wiping the sweat from his head with a small towel. He was incredibly gracious and answered every question that I had. This was when he was 80 years old. I remember walking away from that moment thinking I hope I look that good when I am 80, much less sound that good. Fountain Of Youth Indeed!

No comments yet . God bless this man and his family. Such a great drummer and I remember the live at St Nicks Charlie Parker LP which I think had Roy Haynes on the cover . The Pat Metheny LP Question and Answer was out of this orbit . Great great drumming. The bit of film Jazz on a Summer's Day with Thelonius Monk and Henry Grimes and Roy is outstanding of course . The live at Newport with John Coltrane with Roy subbing for Elvin Jones another legendary recording. The LP Times Square with Gary Burton and Steve Swallow with Roy and Tiger on trumpet. The Bud Powell LP on Blue Night with Sonny Rollins and Fats Navarro. What another great record with Tommy Potter on Bass . Saw Roy live in 1999 at the Pizza Express in London with his trio and yeah of course it was off the chart , great trio . Another time he was in Ronnie Scott's watching Elvin Jones but yeah we were watching him watching Elvin ! Loved that film with him and Chick and Mirislav in Japan that was class stuff. The man has been a jazz super hero

Roy Haynes, one of the OG Bop to Post Bop Giants, his playing on Chick Corea's 'Now He Sings, Now He Sobs' and Pat Metheny's 'Question And Answer' are some real fantastic examples of RH's playing. One of the last my drummer-musicians heroes!! I met him once off stage in a concert in Portugal and, knowing my love for jazz drumming, said to me: If you come to New York send me a post card before. Mr. Haynes what is your address. Just write Roy Haynes, New York city. Everybody knows Roy Haynes.
Even if this is not totally true, everybody should listen to his art and craft. Still is my favourite drummer in a guitar trio. That record trio of Pat Metheney, Dave Holland and the master Haynes recorded in one day. Holland had never played with Mr. Haynes before. Always on my mind and heart Mr. Haynes wherever you are.

Chicks trio in Japan Is also amazing(I saw that trio at the Vanguard in 1982). I was fortunate enough to have seen Roy many times since the early 1970s, some of those gigs were unusual and unique. I talked to him and had a few conversations over the years, when he was on a break, always friendly and so informative. I literally was just wondering yesterday whether the great Roy Haynes was still with us. He was indeed still with us yesterday but now I find out that today he's gone. Ninety nine years! What a career he had, what an imaginative drummer, and apparently what a great person he was. Think about all the musical associations he had over the years with Lester Young, Charlie Parker, Sarah Vaughn, Sonny Rollins, Thelonious Monk, Bud Powell, Roland Kirk, Stan Getz, John Coltrane, Oliver Nelson, Eric Dolphy, Chick Corea, Gary Burton and so many more. One of the lights has gone out of the world. Roy Haynes has passed at 99 years old. One of my first inspirations and heroes, I was lucky to see him live a few times and even interact with him for a few precious moments. At once modern and timeless, he was an artist that could have existed during Sumerian times or been at the heart of NYC 2050...you could never 'put your finger' on what he was doing, but the joy and inticacy he brought to all of music told you immediately you were listening to an innate master. Here is a piece I wrote many years ago published in an obscure Jazz monthly. I was informed by the editor, who rubbed elbows with Roy at a trade show, that Mr. Haynes loved the article and took a dozen copies with him(!) It came out of my deep love and respect for the man, and after searching for it an hour, am happy to share. The photo is used with permission from the Pat LaBarbera personal archives for my Elvin Jones coffeetable book in progress. L-R is Roy, Pat LaBarbera, Elvin Jones (circa early 1980's). R.I.P dearest Roy!!! Haynes!!!!

    Roy Haynes
    Any Era

    James Bennington
In 1996 when I was living in Houston, Texas, a friend calls me up and asks what I'm doing the next day. I say nothing and would he like to get together for lunch? Instead, he asks if I'd be interested in picking Roy Haynes up from the airport! Roy was coming in as the headliner for the Houston Jazz Festival and we were warned beforehand that he may be hard to deal with and to "watch out", so we were a little nervous. The day looked as though it would get off to a bad start as we had been given incorrect flight information and arrived late.
I saw Mr. Haynes sitting calmly by himself in the terminal and approached him with caution...immediately, I found that Roy was a kind and gracious person with a quick and, at times, cutting wit. At 71 he wore a very stylish casual outfit of khaki slacks, slip on dress shoes, and a striped sleeveless shirt. His head was shaved save for a "soul patch" in the back. As we assembled the group and got under way, I could see that Roy had more energy than the younger musicians he had with him, as well as a better attitude. Obviously, the rest of the band (except for pianist Dave Kikoski) was more excited about their next tour stop in New Orleans, treating Houston as a necessary evil. Roy, who's been doing this for 50 + years, was plainly excited not only about the night before them, but the sound check as well!
First, we went to their hotel and Roy goes to the bar while the band and the tour manager secure the lodgings. It turned out that the hotel had only reserved regular rooms for the band. While Roy sits at the bar (fully aware of what is going on), the tour manager tells the staff that Mr. Haynes must have a suite. He explains to them who he is, who he has played with, how many times he has played at the White House, etc. It's not until he mentions Miles Davis and Charlie Parker that the staff recognize a "name" -- one complimentary suite for Roy Haynes coming up (after much haggling and convincing)! Roy graciously asked my friend and I to join him and promptly offered to buy us a drink. I refused and bought Roy a Bacardi and soda and the three of us hung out while the rest of the group freshened up from their journey. An attractive waitress less than half his age focused her attention on Roy and flirted with him; she had no idea how old he was! Hell, I can't wear a sleeveless shirt and get away with it!
Once everyone was ready, we departed for the sound check. On the way, Roy talked to us about the old days (in the South especially) and the poor conditions for blacks then. How the band had to disinfect the beds and bathrooms, get their food from the backdoors of restaurants, etc. For a moment, we realized that Mr. Haynes has been around a long time. That feeling quickly disappeared though as we watched him rehearse his band; we watched and learned from a true master. How fresh his approach was! One thing I'll never forget is during one of the tunes in their set, a four-four swing tune, Roy did his famous triplet beat- the right hand playing the first two notes on the snare, the third on the bass drum with the left hand lightly muting the snare head. He did this rhythm for several choruses and took the music to another plane! Roy really went for it during the rehearsal; the show that night was more polished. That evening, when he was introduced he literally jumped from behind his kit exclaiming to the audience "I'm one of the last of the swing era musicians!"
As I recall, it was the fourth of July weekend and seeing Roy perform along with the colorful fireworks in the night sky was just beautiful...Though tired from the many events and the hecticism of the day, we watched from the wings that evening with a few smiles aimed at us from Roy himself, and we knew that being around and witnessing the timeless and uncanny magic of this man was a privilege in any era! Thank You Thank You Roy Haynes!
    Post Script
I caught the perennial Roy Haynes several years later at the Jazz Alley in Seattle, and aside from watching him up close (by the high-hat), the night was especially memorable because after his set, I remember Roy sat alone at the bar eating oysters on the half shell and drinking beer. It was pleasantly surprising to see such a legend just sitting there along with everybody else. Only a few folks approached him, so I went up and reminded him of our meeting some years ago (I also got his autograph on We Three, one of my favorite records)...while we were talking, the bartender said he thought it was great that Roy was hanging out at the bar after his set and Roy looked surprised and asked what the other artists did. The bartender told him that most of them went back to the dressing room. Roy heard that and said, "Ah man, that's outta style!”

Although I came to appreciate Roy later in my listening I really enjoyed his work. His albums Out of the afternoon, Just US and We Three are now some of my favorites. An amazing talent. I say that a lot but Jazz is filled with so many of them.

"Live Under the Sky" was a yearly jazz festival at Keio Yomiuriland, not 5 minutes by car from my apartment. I came to Japan in '83, but didn't move to this location until about5 years later, so I missed the 83' event. But before the event came to a close, I did see the likes of Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Milton Nascimento, and Pat Metheny among others. Japan is a paradise for jazz lovers. R.I.P. Roy Haynes.
