- Stablemates (Golson). Benny Golson, tenor saxophone, Joan Monné, piano, Ignasi Gonzalez, bass, and Jo Krause drums. Benny Golson, the iconic tenor saxophonist and one of jazz’s most celebrated composers, passed away on September 21, 2024, at the age of 95. A towering figure in the world of jazz, Golson’s contributions as both a musician and a composer have left an indelible mark on the genre, shaping the sound and direction of jazz over multiple decades.
Born on January 25, 1929, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Golson rose to prominence in the 1950s as a key figure in the hard bop movement, blending bebop sophistication with blues and R&B influences. He played alongside jazz legends such as Dizzy Gillespie, Art Blakey, John Coltrane, and Lionel Hampton, earning a reputation for his lyrical tone and expressive playing.
But it was Golson’s extraordinary talent as a composer that set him apart. His compositions have become jazz standards, recorded and performed by musicians around the world. Iconic pieces such as “I Remember Clifford,” written in memory of trumpeter Clifford Brown, "Whisper Not," "Killer Joe," "Stablemates," and "Along Came Betty" continue to define modern jazz and are beloved across generations of jazz enthusiasts.
In addition to his work with Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers, Golson co-founded the Jazztet with trumpeter Art Farmer in 1959. The group became a cornerstone of the hard bop sound and further established Golson’s influence as both a composer and performer. His contributions during this period helped to cement the hard bop style as a dominant force in jazz.
Beyond the world of live performance, Golson's versatility extended to television and film, where he composed and arranged for shows like M*A*S*H and Mission: Impossible. His ability to seamlessly blend jazz with cinematic scores made him a sought-after talent in the entertainment industry.
A revered educator, Golson also dedicated much of his life to sharing his deep knowledge of jazz history and technique. He mentored countless musicians and lectured extensively, leaving a lasting impact on future generations of jazz artists. His role as both a historian and creator of jazz ensured that his legacy would endure not only through his recordings but also through the students he inspired.
Benny Golson’s influence on jazz is immeasurable. His music transcends time, embodying the soul, complexity, and beauty of the genre. As a performer, composer, and educator, his legacy will continue to inspire and shape the world of jazz for generations to come.
He is survived by his family and a global community of musicians and fans who celebrate his life and music. Benny Golson’s spirit will forever echo in the melodies of the jazz standards he leaves behind.'

Benny is one of those sax players I’ve followed for many years for his creative output and style, RIP beautiful man and musician!
A beautiful man who made the world a better place for his presence in it and who has left us a wonderful musical legacy.

I met him and his wife over 10 years ago in Europe. They were the nicest people. Benny just exudes kindness. He took my address down, weeks later I got a package from his office in California. It had his latest cd and other interesting things about him. I was floored. A long journey has come to an end. God bless him.
Incredible legacy.
A great tree has fallen.
Condolences to the Golson family and especially his wife; married since 1959 they remained deeply in love after more than 60 years;… a triumph in of itself. Rest in power, sir.
Well said.
One of the titans whose music defined an era, a composer who left a rich legacy, a saxophonist whose sound reverberates long after the song has ended. 95.7 years, a long life. Thanks, Maestro, for the music, and thanks, Bret, for being who you are!
Thank you!
I had a chance to see him in the 90s and remember it well. He played a great set and told some cool stories. Whisper Not, I Remember Clifford and Killer Joe are 3 of my favorites by him. RIP Jazz Master
RIP Benny Golson, your music made the world a little better.Thank you!
Many nights playing this composers music, thank you for showing the way Mr Golson
Arguably the most significant saxophonist/composer arranger of the classic Hard Bop era, only rivaled by John Coltrane and Wayne Shorter (thought both are IMHO more aptly described as Post Bop). But in terms of repertoire, I dare to say Benny's tunes have had a significantly wider reach (still do). His many Standards are quintessential 'Straight Ahead Jazz'. Thanks fro sharing. His music lives on.

Rest in Peace, Benny Golson. Thanks for the compositions & all the music.
All my peoples leaving the planet Play left us with love, inspiration and great music love Benny Golson☮️❤️✨
Sigh…….what an incredible person and a life SO well lived. I especially love the stories about how he helped Art Blakey get the Messengers together musically and organizationally. Like Coltrane, Benny was the whole package - highly influential player, composer, businessman, story teller, leader and stellar human being!
To me, the best jazz composer and one of the best in history of any genre. His melodies are something else, otherworldly.
And what a pleasant speaking voice he had, never knew...
One of the best. He will be missed.
Thats sad. One of the best jazz saxophone player ever. 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
RIP Benny Golson, great saxophonist and composer.
Won’t be forgotten! And these tales he told in this show are fantastic!
Yes, exactly.
One of my favorite tenor sax sound. RIP Sir
the last original wind of Messengers. We'll miss you Benny.
Thank you JVG for remenbering Benny. He as a wonderful human being , his compositions full of ideas and humor and his soft articulation on the tenor will rest for ever!!! This sad "news" killed me this morning. I feel lonely.
He touched many lives, that's for sure.
A compositional genius.
Sad to hear of Benny Golson's passing. A great saxophonist, no doubt, but his greatest contribution to jazz history is all the wonderful tunes he wrote. Just off the top of my head, these include "Blues March", "I Remember Clifford", "Along Came Betty", "Killer Joe", "Stablemates", "Whisper Not" etc....and many more. Until a few days ago there were only two remaining living musicians from the iconic 1958 photograph "A Great Day in Harlem" ; now only Sonny Rollins remains.
I haven't watched the video yet; I will come back later to view/hear it.
A superb musician. A loss to thw world of Jazz.
Benny had a great run...95 plus... his music 🎶 is timeless

Benny. What a sophisticated, smooth operator and tunesmith!

R.I.P. BENNY GOLSON
Thanks for the music, Benny!! So glad I got to see you!!
I remember that at some stage in my music or saxophone development in my uncle's house who loved Jazz I could not sleep listening to this saxophonist legend, Benny Golson. I asked my uncle who's this man? My uncle said it's Benny Golson, the saxophonist who grew up with John Coltrane who I loved so much. I said this man is extraordinary. His compositions are sweet and out of this world. His saxophone playing is so sweet that it makes me think of my past lives that I don't know a damn about!!!
thanks for taking the time to post this comment
Thank you for this tribute to a superb musical presence. RIP.

Sad news, but a great life for a great musician and composer.
He appeared in the legendary photograph A Great Day In Harlem, with dozens of other brilliant players.
I believe that only one remains, now. Hail, Sonny Rollins.
You are correct. And perhaps some of the kids sitting on the stoops.

Benny Golson. Gone with Golson. Met him once. Signed some albums.Very sweet. ICONIC!
Lucky!
What a gift to Jazz Improvisors. Stablemates is still teaching us how to play. It’s one of those rights of passage songs. Like rhythm changes, blues, Giant Steps, Tune up, Joy Spring, Blue Bossa, etc. There’s more but Benny Golson wrote many. Along Came Betty, etc. ❤R.I.P. to the master composer
My condolences to the legend 😢
Lovely human being who will be much missed. Is there anyone around who might write a commemorative composition: "I remember Benny"?
RIP to one of my favourite tenors. The time keeper was on fire👌👌👌👌👌👌👌

A great human being.
Thank you JVG. Regretfully the last two posts that I saw were obits. These folks are not young, gone from this plane, but have left us with much. Rest in Peace Mr. Golson.
This is life. As we get older, the cast of characters changing. Our friends, and our cultural icons leave us. And eventually we join them.
Rest in peace smooth Be-Bop champion.

Thank U 4 keeping the Jazz Greats in the public’s eye 😎🎼
Appreciate your comment.
Besides all his other accomplishments, Benny was an outstandingly inventive tenor saxophone player. In his own style, he was up there with Cannonball Adderley, Stan Getz, Dexter Gordon, Sonny Rollins, and -- yes! -- John Coltrane and other greats. It's sad that he is gone, but his music will always be alive.
His music is eternal.
We miss You. R.I.P.💔
Great story. Not too many of us get to have our friend John Coltrane ask us if we have any tunes that Miles can play. But was Benny ready for the opportunity? UH-HUH.
I loved Benny Golson's music. Everyone of his compositions was a jazz standard. A feat that very few musicians has achieved. Off the top of my head, Monk and Sonny Rollins are the others. He had a long life and one hopes a happy one. RIP Benny Golson
モダン・ジャズ最後の生き残りの一人だ。🙄 彼のことだ、継承は終わらせていたろう。安らかに。🙄 サンキュー😉👍🎶、ベニー。
Thank You Bret
Really sad news. RIP 🖤
We lost another giant.
remember him with love:with art blakey live at the club saint Germain!
😥😥😥❤❤❤🙏🙏🙏
The Jazztet had some great lineups. The album Meet the Jazztet had Benny Golson, Art Farmer, Curtis Fuller, Lex Humphries, Addison Farmer and a 21 year old pianist, McCoy Tyner.
RIP Benny Golson, one of the greats.
That's an amazing record!
R.I.P Benny.
I remember Benny.
Them sax cats are really jamming in heaven now✝️🎶🎵🎶🎷
I remember Steven Spielberg's movie The Terminal, where Tom Hanks character's dream was to see a show of the last Jazz legend alive: Benny Golson. Rest in Peace, master!
Was quite an interesting film.
I knew quite a few JWs, and through them had a few opportunities to go back stage whenever he performed. Even in his late 80''s Benny always gave an outstanding performance on tenor. He will be dearly missed.
Like Lazarus, our friend is just sleeping...for now.
R.I.P sax man
RIP 😔🙏
R.I.P :(
Nos vemos del otro lado.
🙏
🌹
R.I.P Master
He was a true master
There may be financial reasons why cats like him still played until the end, but nonetheless it is great for use to have these treasures of music and stories. Trumpetists may not be able to work so long, but I am glad saxofonists can!
