I'm 56 years old and I've probably been to over 100 concerts in my life. I've seen bands like Slayer, Metallica, KISS, Pantera, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, etc. But in my top 5 all time concerts I've ever been to is when I saw Dolly Parton here in my hometown in 2014. It wasn't with a full band but it was still Dolly and she was amazing. Her storytelling was aewsome, she was funny, but it was her singing that really blew me away. Plus she's such a good person. She's so giving. Her philanthropic efforts are legendary.

Dolly grew on me over time as a country music fan. She was the real first female singers that wrote and sang her own songs. This is one of my favorite songs of hers. You should definitely do her and Kenny Rogers Islands In The Stream duet.

I brought Dolly (and a room full of her "posse") room service at the Sheraton Music City when I lived in Nashville (late 80's). She was everything you would expect, calling me "dang cute" and got a kick out of my blushing. I'll never forget it.

It’s funny that Amber mentioned the guitar making it sound country … Dolly insisted the producer bring in a steel guitar player to make it sound more country. She thought it sounded too pop. This song stayed #1 on the country charts for 5 weeks and won her a Grammy award. It crossed over to the billboard pop charts and made it to #3. Her first crossover hit! Love it!

I love Dolly Parton and her music, she is also a very generous human being. I used to work for what was then American Airlines and Dolly would fly with us a lot on her way and back from LA. I loaded luggage and freight, you could tell when she was on the plane. She would have big cases, about 6, many were empty probably on a buying spree after she finished her show.

This was Dolly's first mainstream, top 40 hit, even though she was already a respected staple on country radio. I hope you'll listen to her 9 to 5. The "percussion" is perhaps the most unusual you've ever heard.

Best line from this song, "looking better than a body has a right to". I love that line. The 70s were when artists started playing with the idea of crossing over to other genre's. Crossing from country to pop was common and proved quite successful for artists like Dolly, Olivia Newton John, John Denver, Kenny Rogers...and more. Now artists cross genre's all the time, but the 70s were when artists paved the way. Dolly is truly an angel.

She was criticized for leaving country & she said that she would Never leave country behind but take it with her! I always recommend for anyone who is new to Dolly parton, to go back to anything She recorded between 1972-1987. . . You will Not be disappointed!!

One of my favorite Dolly songs. Written by pop song writers Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil. This was probably Dolly’s first big pop music hit. I recently read that she wanted there to be steel guitars added to the instrumentation and she wanted them to be very audible so that if somebody say the song wasn’t country, she would able to say it was and be able to prove it.

This was about 1978 and she was expanding into mainstream music with this album and this song in particular was a huge hit on the pop charts. She was doing interviews around this time where she said she wanted to be a mainstream household name/ superstar. She of course succeeded!! Once again, I am going to try to make a case for you guys to listen to Maria McKee for female Friday.
    1) Dolly Parton said she was the best front woman of a band (Lone Justice) that she has ever seen.
    2) she was actually discovered by Linda Rondstadt when she was fronting Lone Justice
    3) Adam Duritz (lead singer for Counting Crows) often included the character “Maria” in his songs, and later stated in an interview that this was in part a reference to Maria McKee, who he idolized and had a huge crush on
    4) Her voice and songwriting are epic and run the gamut of many genres. Check her out in Lone Justice (Sweet, Sweet Baby, Dixie Storms, Shelter, and many others) and solo (Show Me Heaven, If Love is a Red Dress, I’m Gonna Soothe You, This Property is Condemned, Breathe, Opelousas (Sweet Relief), Panic Beach, I Forgive You, Nobody’s Child, and MANY more. Once you hear her voice it never lets you go.

This is most definitely a pop song. Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil originally wrote it for Brenda Lee, who turned it down. Gary Klein produced this record with Dolly after hearing it by B.J. Thomas. The pedal steel part was added for Dolly to give it some country twang. Patti LaBelle has a great version of the song, too.

This song was so fitting when they used it on Gilmore Girls.

This is my favorite Dolly Parton song! My dad and my uncle used to play this song all the time when I was a child. It never really sound like a country song to me even though it was played on country stations.

With "9 to 5" she crossed over into pop and did a whole series of main stream songs!

One I think you really need to listen to is K.T. Oslin, her song 80's Ladies was a great song. She had a beautiful voice.

Dolly is one of those artists who shouldn't be pigeonholed into one genre. She can do anything.

I haven't heard this song in a million years. I wasn't even sure I knew it until you started playing it. It feels like childhood.

Not only can this lovely lady sing but she is a great actress as well who has been in a few films
But one of my favorites is a musical that she starred with Burt Reynolds called The Best Little Whorehouse In Texas
