    Put in a cistern with the well, in case the water levels fluctuate, so that you have a guaranteed water supply

    You should build your different buildings in a U-shape. Then you would have a yard protected from the wind.

    A Diné woman once told me, 'be still and the Earth will speak to you.' It meant more than she will ever know. I think you two have been amazing listeners to the Earth and even more so in the last year (as from what I can see). For years now, without failure, with every new piece of content, I grow more and more fond and proud of what you learn and your growth and mentality and dedication and even surprised by you (in good ways). Hope restored in people little by little lol.

    Colorado is a crazy mix of every weather scenario possible. Fire mitigation is something you want to think about sooner than later. With the mild winter we've had it makes me nervous about the coming season.

    • @karibaxter5330
      @karibaxter5330 2 года назад +3

      Also, to build on what Sax Cobra said, if you have insurance, great. If not then research if you can get insurance in case you need to bail if a fire comes through. I'm starting to think we need to build under the ground instead of watching homes burn above ground, over and over again. Other option is building with materials that aren't wood.

    It’s going to be so beautiful! Can’t wait to see it all transpire. If you get the water flowing, I would suggest planting the fruit trees sooner than later so they’ll be established and fruiting quickly. And planting a well thought out wind break of tall trees will help immensely and also beautify.

    • @shamrocksquaw7135
      @shamrocksquaw7135 2 года назад +2

      Plant the wind break tree first. I made the mistake of planting fruit trees and the wind demolished most of them and they took way too much water. The ones that survived brought in rats, rabbits, mice that ate the fallen fruit and destroyed my wiring in my truck. Got the well in only to find out I had to also put in a 4k water system to filter out the arsenic and other contamination. It’s not an easy life for women as most of my neighbors wives have left to go back to town and get an apartment. So when she has a gripe such as the wind, etc., ya better listen.

  • @numsixber
    @numsixber 2 года назад +8

    I don’t know what zone you live in but once you guys decide where you want to build your house and shop you should decide on what tree is best for your zone and plant a windbreak of trees around your living area. Eastern white pine, Colorado blue spruce, White cedar, Douglas fur and White fur can all be planted to form a large wall of trees or a giant wind fence around your homestead, you might even plant them before you start building your house to give them a head start on growing large enough to create that windbreak. This is done a lot on the great plains to block homes and barnes from the high winds.

    You are so blessed to be able to do this at your age. My husband and I did everything we were "supposed" to do when we were in our 20's. Worked, got a mortgage, then worked simply to pay the mortgage and the bills, which was hard because when we had kids, we decided that I'd stay home to be with them (which I don't regret at all). I sincerely wish we had known about tiny living, homesteading, being able to home school our kids, etc....all of the things that we have been told is "not normal" anymore, because I know we would have had a better life and my husband would have had more time with our kids when they were younger. Now we are 46 and 48 and looking to do parts of that dream now - get land...get a yurt and build a homestead and become self-reliant and we feel it's more important now than ever because it's plain to see where "the system" is going....where it is faltering. And you just get sick of lining everybody else's pockets. Our daughter's family with our new grandbaby wants to share the dream with us which is amazing. We want the land to be there for all of our kids to have whenever things go south in the world. Somewhere were they will be safe, can hunt and grow food and feed their families. Somewhere where they can live in harmony with the natural world, and not against it.
    I'm really looking forward to seeing you achieve your goals and thank you so much for inviting us to watch and learn

    As the years go along, you two are going to be the most interesting couple. You will have learned so much as you take this path you've chosen. All of the things you spoke about in this video will come to fruition and you will get great satisfaction out of all of it. At the age of 7, I watched a piece of land that was full of wild growth and a pond, become a large hole in the ground (after the well was established) and then the hole became a concrete basement that only opened at one end and then an A-framed house was erected over that concrete hole. It was very organic and beautiful as if it had come out of the land as a mountain would. I'm 55 now and it's still changing and growing. Now, there is an amazing treehouse with a Japanese garden and waterfall and a bamboo forest that has been used to build so many things. I look forward to watching your land grow and change, and you along with it!

    I love how you guys address the "problems" like sun or wind as just a simple adjustment to learning how to live on your homestead without changing the natural beauty of it. The wind can be your best friend with energy production, even having the house facing a particular direction to help shield the wind from a very common walkway or anything to can help. So much potential!

    Trees, yesss, more trees! Fruit trees sound awesome, and all the rest. So smart to get a lot of acres. One of the sweetest places I've ever lived was surrounded by dense woods (and located at the end of a dirt road), so the privacy was delicious. But it was kind of an illusion, because just outside of those woods was, um, concrete roads and homes. When the owner had first bought the property though, it was way more rural (before the land close by was all purchased and such). Even so, lots of awesome critter encounters. One of my favs was walking through the house one day and spotting a deer hopping out of the woods into our front/side yard. And then another, and another... I counted at least 8 deer. They were so comfortable out there. Some nibbling on the trees, others lounging in the grass in the shade. So wonderful watching them. There were also gorgeous butterflies and birds. I especially adore birds (I have lots of winged "totems"). Wondering what kind of birds you guys are seeing. Indeed, Nature knows when you respect her and she'll love you back for it. That connection is magical.

    I’m so happy for you both. It’s an enormous journey which we have been on for a number of years! We also lived on our land before starting to build for a year and the savings on energy consumption having placing our land north facing (Southern Hemisphere) is enormous. In winter often the wood fired heater is lit around 4.30-5pm. Our concrete slab acts as a heat sink warming the house too. Summer will be better once the hops vines cover our pergola near the double glazed windows. I’ve planted She Oaks as wind breaks as it allow wind to flow through them thus not causing other uplift thermals. A real problem if a tree totally blocks the wind. There is so much great information around now on best orientation for building. Shame only 10% of people follow it.

    Love you kids! Your ideas are so grounded and natural. We feel the same as you folks do and we also live in CO. SWCO in Pagosa Springs. Our idea for building a home was to first build one obtuse structure that employs the first view we love and then down the road build the second obtuse structure that employs our second favorite view. Once the living structures were built the ground in between the structures would be the communal area between the two structures, protected from the winds and the heat… Your property is the type of area that will accommodate the time it would take while building at your leisure and enjoying a long life of building and purposing the land as you need.
    Best of luck on your plans!

    I've lived in the high desert of NM all my life and it's so beautiful it's literally in my blood my bones my soul. I left and lived on the east coast for a year but the desert pulled me back.

    My daughter built a greenhouse last summer and she harvested veggies into Feb this winter. It is a learning curve on what grows well. She lives in Louisiana, so they get some winter but not terrible. I think the dome will be great.
