It seems like a real gas stove/oven to cook on, and an easily serviceable shower/tub setup would be a priority for both of you. I was raised off grid over 3 years as my father built a home pay as you go from the ground up. Those simple and not so difficult to implement creature comforts made our lives so much better while reducing the kind of anxiety a family inherently has without them. The addition of a propane refrigerator was also a high point.

14:50 Barron - we recently upgraded our home wifi and leveraged PoE to connect and power 3 mesh access points. We went with th TP-link X-50 PoE (can be bought as a set of 3) and so far it's been working great. We have ours upstairs, downstairs, and in our garage, but i could see this working well for your main house, Elsa's office, and the A-frame. Note youll also need a switch that pushes power as one access point cannot power another in this setup. Interested to see what you ultimately come up with!

I love seeing what is entailed in your solar set up and how you manage off-grid life.
I lived on a farm for 10 years, off grid. We depended on catchment water as well, using a generator to pump water from a small redwood tank by the house up the hill to two giant redwood tanks, for later gravity feed to our gardens.
This way of life took some doing. But instead of working in an abstract way to earn money to pay for things needed to live, we worked directly on what was needed to sustain us. A good life, but takes work and vigilance. And community.

Elsa-I have an experience that your clay friends might need to be aware of.My husband and his brother went to John Woolman school back in the 70's,and they made clay vessels and glazes from wild clay. They are really cool salt fired cups and bowls, and other things.I would have my hot lemon tea in one of the cups, and discovered that the glaze left a metallic taste in my tea,and a thin film on the top of it! I dumped it,but it continued to happen,so now we just use the cups for holding toothbrushes and things like that.We live where there is some great clay colors, but not good for food.I don't know if there is some way to test the clays, but it might be a good idea.

For pickling jewelry I use a pickle solution specifically made for that and I don’t need to heat the pickle, just leave the piece in there for 20min depending on how dirty it is. The only drawback is that it’s not very good to breathe in, unlike vinegar and salt.

Beautiful ring! FYI...basil needs constant warmth 60 and above...I live in zone 8 and we found that planting basil too early before the soil and temps aren't more consistent the plants are more stunted and ultimately did not produce as luscious of a plant. Basil for your zone probably will be an inside plant. Trial and error is a good way to learn...get tips from you neighbors and find out what grows best in your zone. I would also find out the typical last freeze day...but living at that high of altitude maybe you can get a freeze at anytime? Tough environment!

Y'all don't need to bring your pots in and out. Get some frost free row covers instead! The lightest is like protection down to 28 degrees. I use that and then I get the heaviest one for colder temps. Make some wire arches taller than your plants so the row cover doesn't sit right on the plants. I attach with clothes pins. Johnny's carries them, most garden catalogs carry them. So worth the investment and then if you get an inground garden you can get stuff out earlier. ❤ Hope this helps!!

I like the way you have different buildings, it's like a compound. Thanks for sharing.

If you're ever interested in coming to South Dakota for a Fairburn Agate hunt you just let me know! They make fantastic jewelry that is if you can find some gems! Fairburns don't come a dime a dozen, but when you do find them, they are absolutely gorgeous!💚
