In case you may not know, homemade hummingbird nectar is the best. The red food color nectar, even though it's pretty, it's deadly to the hummingbirds. I have no clue why they still sell it. We love feeding the birds, great window entertainment for my cats too.

With the hummingbird feeder - they sell water wells that hang from the hanger and then feeder hangs from bottom of the water well. This keeps ants out of your feeder. Believe it or not - every ant will be marching up the pile, post, bracket, tree - whatever you hang your feeder from. The water well serves two purposes - filled will water it prevents ants from getting into the sip holes of the feeder and they are colorful. I buy red and that adds the pop of red the hummers love and are drawn too. I have 2 feeders and they have hummingbirds all season.

The plant with the red blooms and dark green leaf are Mandevilla. They like full sun and will vine, a trellis is good for them. The house plant that you mentioned being too wet and wondered if they even drank water,, tall spikey is of the succulent family commonly called Mother N Law tougne. It likes root bound and little water esp in the winter. Low light plant. The plants Barron likes is coleus. Lots of varieties of that plant, all beautiful! Good luck with gardening, so much fun🍀✌

Oh and you can make a bee hydration station away from the house. Basically a shallow bird bath full of glass beads for them to rest on without drowning. They’re attracted to the light refracting off of the glass so that might be why they’re bouncing off of the windows. A few flowering plants around that might help as well.

My coleus are about 2 feet tall and I’ve had a hanging one that was over 4 feet before. They do like a good filtered light. Fun fact I just found out last year: in the fall near end of season, cut off the stems with leaves on and put them in mason jars. Keep watered and they will not only root but mine bloomed indoors! I just stuck them in a pot this spring and they’ve grown tall and filled a big patio pot.

As a suggestion, contact the Agricultural Extension Office in your area. They have soil maps for your area and can even do site plans. Your states university does trials of plant and crops to identify the ones that will grow best in your area and the Extension offices then pass that information down to you. They are a wealth of information. They can also do soil testing for you for a nominal fee (your taxes already pay for all their services if you use it or not!!) and offer classes and information about every thing to do with homemaking and agriculture. I grew up on a farm in NC and they were our go to for information!

All plants want to grow towards the light, so the reason your pothos could be growing back through the beads might be because the beads are reflecting so much sunlight, making them the brighter light source. You could try using matt beads or beads of a different color that aren't glossy and reflective.

Tip for planting in pots. If you put your compost on top of your soil then when you water and the compost starts breaking down the water will travel the compost down to the plant roots. Where as when you have compost at the bottom of your pot then the water drags your compost down away from the roots and out of the pot if you have drain holes. As a result if you put your compost on top of your soil you don't need as much of it to work at best efficiency.

I like the livestock fead idea - tiny shiny home - another family I like to watch- got a sweet deal on a great product that is very similar but intended for gardening and that company (sorry I don’t remember the company) but they could configure their own layout with them.
(Please tell me if mentioning another program is breaking the rules)
to keep critters out you could make a sturdy cover with wire cattle fencing
and the shade netting to keep critters out and limit the amount of intense sun. Tent like flaps that open at both ends and use magnets or Velcro to keep them shut.
Then in the winter you could cover it with something to protect the plants from the cold weather and the cattle fencing will be strong enough to take high winds and snow. You could keep things growing longer and start the seedlings inside so you’re ready for spring.
Harvest the seeds as you go and grow. Anytime you find something that “has gone to seed “ herbs do it when they get too much sun. Do just let the plant like cilantro or parsley kinda dies - just that branch - then it’ll bloom and the die and give you seeds.
That’s natures way of say “ you planted me in too much sun, collect my seeds and I’ll give you another chance”
You can cut seeds out of many different fruit and grow it.
But if you buy plants from the nursery the seeds you get might not give you fruit. That’s why growing from seeds is the best.
You can grow beans from beans. Black beans, pintos, lentils, peas, chickpeas, green beans.
Always have 3 zucchini’s if you don’t have both sexes you’ll never get zucchini.
    Gosh I still haven’t finished your video!🤣

I also have screen covers - just made from window screen fabric from Home Depot and tented over the beds, which protect my veggies from hail, which we are prone to having at high altitude. We just had a layer of ice over everything a couple days ago. Love the black pots, what a deal! My grandma buys me cheap terra cotta pots and garden tools she finds at garage sales. Moving sales are the best place to get cheap mature plants! I’m not sure if you’ve read up on Hummingbird stuff, but the sugar water needs to be changed every day or 2. Otherwise the water will mold or turn to alcohol. It causes their tongue to not go back in, and they can end up dead. So it’s a lot of work to maintain them. Just make sure you can stay dedicated to it :)

Coleus grows great here (NE) in the shade. Nice pop of color where flowers won't bloom.

The valley can be so pretty, but harsh all at the same time. You two make it look easy, even though it is quite hard to get things to grow there.

Excellent to hear about your plans for family in the next couple of years! Yes, you're right! Nobody can ever be "ready" for kids, but you can DEFINITELY be "more ready" than you were with a half-finished house in the works! ❤❤❤
Just remember what they say in the military: "No good plan survives insertion!" 😂😂😂

If you pinch back your annuals, they'll bush out AND you can start new plants with the tops that you cut off
